Hi Ownordisown not only do you identify a problem others might not be aware of you, you make a connection with a guy who does a step-by-step guide on how to fix it. To say you deserve more subs and views is an understatement. Actually this should be made widely available to everyone buying next gen laptops.
Not at all :) It's not all praise, though you've gone above and beyond by actually contacting someone with a solution. I've been on forums where people have seen their new, expensive laptops suffer and not known why. I really do think this should be out there for Alienware to address because there aren't going to be many people willing to strip down a laptop to apply thermal paste.
I have had my 15R3 since 2016 and am just now finding out about the heat issue since I started playing Overwatch on it 3 days ago. This video was super informative and helpful. I wish I would have known about the issue sooner than later, but at least I know now and know where I can begin to get things fixed. Thank you so much for making this video.
I have Alienware 17 r3 with 6820hq CPU but with GTX 980m GPU everything is good but u know u start to hate the laptop when it has thermal throttle so IAM moving for thermal grizzly conductonot
A channel who not only helps advise on the good buys, but also helps find solutions for the bad buys. Helping spread iunlock's work and findings is the kind of move that further sets your content apart from others. Great video as always! I now wonder what my temperatures on my GT73VR would be like with liquid metal paste. They certainly are already impressive temperatures for a laptop. Another thumbs up to you sir!
Lol Nope Thanks buddy! I think iunlock did a comparison between the GT73VR and AW17 R4 using liquid metal on NBR. I think the Alienware was cooler actually which I was surprised at..
That IS surprising. Oh well, I'm already quite satisfied with my temperatures. I do love the look of the alienware line, but Msi has some features that will keep me locked in for now.
Some of these units have come with plastic between the heat sink and the thermal pads, stuck to the heat sink. Most often the plastic is not even visible, you have to dig into the heat sink to separate it enough to even see it. Fujipoly pads have been very effective. This work is incredible. Thanks, guys.
I've contacted iunlock to repaste my unit. If this unit had regular bad paste that'd be no problem for me to fix, but with the pads/paste/cpu sink alignment, I'm more than happy to let him perfect it.
I think you did, that is great! Although I guess the biggest test is when you overclock it because at stock it boosts only 100 mhz higher than the i7 7700hq...
OWNorDisown I’ve currently got it set at 3.7Ghz when all cores are active and seems very stable, if you’d want me to send over any images from tests of what seems to be a good unit to put a video out lemme know
I doubt you have the time to read comments on 3 year old videos with all your amazing reviews but THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I purchased a GS65 9SD and had serious CPU temperature problems. My 0,2,4 cores would hit 95c while my 1,3,5 cores would sit around the mid 70s. Obviously I had some kind of heatsink mounting pressure issue on the top half of my CPU. Though a bit risky and I don't think anyone has tried this on the GS65, I bent the top heatsink arm up to increase mounting pressure and voila! In game I never spike above 85c now so thank you so much for this video.
Just as a quick update - I am from Germany and got my Alienware 15 yesterday! Production Date was January06. CPU temps get up to 97°C - so nothing at all has been changed in the production! Thumbs up!!!
the regular" I7 6700 - so nothing overclocked or so... sent them an email today - I'll keep you updated on that case - hopefully I don't get one of those less than 100°- everything is fine guys
so got my official reply today from DELL - they won't do anything. The official CPU specs are everything below 100° is fine. So 97° - there is not a problem at all! They sent me a link to the CPU specification sheet - and that's it! ark.intel.com/products/88967/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GH
daniel lindl I don't know if the return process is the same in Germany as it is here in the USA but we have 15 days to return them. I returned two models because of the overheating. Same temperatures as you have. On both occasions I cited that it Thermal throttles and does not perform as well as it should. If you like run Pcmark 8 and see how it compares to the numbers I get in my latest videos. That should tell you if it is throttling in real world applications or not. If it is say you are not happy with it and want a return shipping label.
I've done the conductonaut swap on my AW 17 R4 and I do confirm that temps drop drastically. Mainly for the CPU. For some reason the GPU side was pretty good even with stock paste. Fun note: I manually controlled the fan curve with hwinfo and set it to stay on 2000rpm for both CPU/GPU and will not ramp up until it hits 80C. Played intensive games and also ran unigine for 2 hours straight. Fans never ramped up, both hung around mid 70s Celcius after the test. Liquid metal is the real deal. Swapping out OEM "paste" with some nice traditional paste can help, but it won't be anywhere as big of a difference as liquid metal.
Stanley Chen is liquid metal safe for is laptop? ive heard its possible for it to leak onto your motherboard and if it does itll ruin it so im kinda discouraged from using that
It is safe. Just make sure to protect yourself with surrounding the area with the thin thermal tape. Super 33+ is the one I use. In case it DOES spill because too much was applied, the tape will catch it. With the regular tube, you only need to use maybe half of it for both GPU/CPU. Maybe 60% of it if you wanna use a little more. If you use the whole tube it WILL spill out once you put the heatsink on. I know because I did that for fun, luckily the tape caught the spillage. It's ok to lift the heatsink once the liquid metal is applied just to make sure nothing is spilling. Just "repaint" the liquid metal on the surfaces to even things out and put heatsink back on.
I was playing RDR2 , and faced some shuttering so I lowered the settings to as lowest possible , yet it's hitting around 96-99 degrees T_T I had no issues playing RDR2 on Very High settings earlier, but now I am so done T_T
When you review the 73VR you should take a look at the power management. When the GFX is under heavy load, the 73VR starts to use the battery to feed extra, meaning you have constant charge / discharge, which is bad for the battery. There are people talking about it on the MSI forums. So far it has kept me from buying the 73VR. Especially since they could have given it a bigger power supply unit, but as someone found out, the GFX cards (1070/80) are not even designed to take more than 120 Watts. So when the gfx load is high (like for a very optimized game that runs on high FPS) the power consumption is high as well, and to negate that the clock goes down. This creates the ironic situation that when you actually don't need the high clock, you can have it, but when you need it, the power limit throttles you. If you could do some research on that topic, maybe with the nice guy in this interview, that would be awesome! Cheers,
Don Tanton hi Don, thanks for mentioning this. I do have a power meter to see how much power is being drawn from the wall socket so I will add that to my test. I've ran quite a few benchmarks already, both at stock and overclocked and the GPu hasn't throttled down at all. Even overclocked it goes up to the high 1900's/2000's but I haven't checked to see if the battery is discharging yet but will.
From watching some of these older vids I gathered you had a previous gen 15 r2. I have the 17" version of the same laptop (with a 6700hq, 970m and 4K UHD) so I was wondering, do these issues laid out in the vid apply to the previous generation of laptops too, particularly with the shoddy cpu/gpu pasting? I'm trying to decide if I should invest in getting mine re-pasted or not. When they designed the previous gen they sure didn't have ease of maintenance in mind so the operation is a bit beyond my pay grade and I'd probably have to pay a shop to do it. It's never been cleaned or repasted but strangely enough it still after all this time doesn't seem to be undergoing any thermal issues as of yet.
If it seems to be working okay I would be inclined to leave it be. I'm sure its sti got the same triangular screw design for the heatplate which can cause uneven pressure.
Hello, @OWNorDISOWN I just bought an Alienware r4 17 with the Nvidia 1070, i7 7820hk and the QHD display. do you think I'm going to have any issues at all? if I do what should I do or watch out for as soon as I get it next week coming? thank you for your answer! I just want to know since it already been a year from all this problem being addressed .
Thanks for the vid. Awesome like always.. I have an Alienware 17 R4. When I gaming I turn the graphics down to 1080 from 1440 and lower from ultra to medium high. And from the capable 120fps to 60fps and I'm getting mid 90s to high 98s degrees temperature. I have the 1080 GTX and the i7-7820hk. I'm concerned it's over heating. Would u agree with the little bit of info I gave u. The high temps r from the cpuid program monitoring and the high temps r with the CPU. The GPU seem to stay low. I don't over clock either. Is the anything u could recommend if this is over heating. Thank you
Mike Lascelle Sound exactly like what I had with mine. Have you tried undervolting it ? That typically shaves off 8 to 9 degrees. Other than that it could well be a repaste job check to see that the screws on the heat sink or screwed down tight.
I recently ordered Alienware 15 R3 6820HK 4.1ghz Dynamically OC, GTX 1070. The first time it was taking forever to build and ship, over a week and I finally had to call and raise hell, and tell them to cancel the order. They finally said that there was a "SKU" error and something with the wrong battery for the system, could just be the run around, and now it wouldn't be until the 9th when I get it (original order on Nov 26th). After dealing with all of that, I see this now, and I'm terrified... Should I play it safe and cancel the damn thing all together and buy a lesser end but capable laptop for the time being? I don't want to pay a restocking fee, nor pay out of pocket to ship the unit back to them, its 7.5lbs... I would be absolutely furious at this point if something like this goes wrong. Note: I typically game for hours on end (5-8), on anything from MMO's to Star Citizen.
Korinzu hi there. I had the same system you just ordered (see my other videos) and it ran hot for me. I didn't have any game crashing although overclocking using the BIOS was unstable so I used Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility. I don't really know what to recommend but given you have waited so long already I would be inclined to keep it and see what it is like, you may get a good one.. At worst Dell have a good returns policy and I didn't pay anything to send mine back so you won't lose out financially.. Thanks for watching my video!
I was not aware of any of this when I recently ordered my Alienware 17 r 4 78 20 h k with a nvidia 1080 and just recently I received it and after playing dragon age Inquisition for an hour it hit 97C I'm sending it back
Phillip Marques hi Phillip, thanks for the question. I heard it was easier on the 13". Let me get with iunlock and see if he has a guide. Those Fujipoly pads look good to me but I will check with him for you.
Phillip Marques I spoke with iunlock and he said he would reply back to you directly. We will probably do a follow up video on the 13" when his team gets back from traveling.
Do you take off the tape before you re-assemble the pc or do you just leave it on there? In terms of thermal pads, how many thermals pads and how thick of the thermal pads would I need for the 1060 model?
peter somjit Hi Peter, I suspect he takes the tape off once everything is applied but I'll make sure iunlock sees your message and responds to you. Thanks for watching!
Hello, my alienware 17 R4 has a graphics card problem. At present, the machine can not identify the graphics card GTX1080, and only show integrated graphics. Computer under normal circumstances is the use of built-in graphics, but FN + F7 switch graphics, computer screen can not be displayed properly. Open the adapter graphics card GTX1080 in front of the yellow exclamation mark and display the code 43. The driver can not be downloaded and installed. I do not know how to do anything to try not to work. The feeling is that the graphics card is burned. Can you help me?
Thanks for your informative videos. This might be a stupid question but if Dell / Alienware are aware of the issues with pasting etc what is the process to get this sorted through them? I don't feel I should have to resolve the issue myself when I have just spent £1700 on a 15 R3. I appreciate the process may be slightly different in the States to the UK but it seems to be a known issue they are aware of.
Mexximus hi there, thanks for watching my videos ☺️ Yes, they are aware of the issues and I have returned two of them (the gtx 1080 model will go back soon). On the latter I cited that it didn't meet the performance of a $3000 machine which is true as in cpu tests it got bested by a $1400 machine. I can imagine they don't want loads of returns and I think they have posted that Temps on the high 90's is normal for an i7 6820hk but if it throttles and you don't get the performance you need RMA it on the same grounds I did. The process might be harder if you are outside of your return period window though as that then falls under the warranty. Are you seeing crazy Temps too?
OWNORDISOWN Thanks for the reply. I have had issues with screen bleed on 2 systems so far and I am currently waiting for the 3rd! Your video has made me think about possibly going down another route as I have lost confidence in the product now which is sad as I think it's a lovely bit of kit! Very informative. Thanks
anyone on this post know what month and day Dell started addressing the thermalpad issue? I just bought a 17R4 from bestbuy and it has a ship date of 12-01-16 from the Dell ARRC Nashville TN labanon location. It's service tag is 6V5XSC2. I called dell tech support and they said it should be the revised version but he wasnt 100% sure. I need to know so I can either return it for a later build date or just keep it as long as the issue has been corrected in this build. Im not going to even attempt a repaste job, I'd rather just exchange it since its much easier and not time consuming plus voiding your warranty. thanks!
Ryan Christensen it's hard to say.. iunlock thought it would be after Dec 6th..Dell will have to move older inventory first. Give it a rigorous test when you get it, I'm sure you will be fine ☺️
hi there i cant understand all this english language on the video cause i must foucs but i have this laptop 17r4 6700hq 1070gtx may i know if i have problems with cooling ? cause i'm not have any cooling problems max heat is 70 , but some time my laptop show blue screen and restart cause drivers issue on windows 10 what i should do , that second time happen i use driver booster and update all drivers but the problem not fixed yet
The main issues in the temperatures were the i7 6820hk at the time because of the extra power needed to run those when overclocked. There were some bad i7 6700hq ones but certainly much less and your 70 degrees is just fine :) Your blue screen issues may be software or hardware related. Rule out software first - perhaps do a system restore to a time when they weren't happening? Or think of when they started and what software was installed that may be causing it. If it's hardware related you can start off by removing a stick of RAM and see if RAM is causing it - even try removing a hard drive and trying it. I suspect it is software related though.
I have the 7820HK, and the temp differences were up to 9C between the cores. I repasted it and they got much closer. But I think the paste that I used (I already had it) is not very good in the first place. So I will repaste it again with something better. My first repaste is with Antec Nano Diamond 6. The paste I just ordered is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. It should make another improvement. I would hope.
Well, not overclocked I could stay around 90C when putting the CPU under load. But after overlcocking it just a little it would just go to around the 98 - 100C and throttle itself to about 3.3GHz. Now it will throttle itself to about 3.6 - 3.7GHz when putting the CPU under load. I used an old and I guess not very good paste. But it gave me about another 300MHz and made the temps between the cores much closer. I just watched your video again. I will see if the thermal pads are too thick or if I need to slightly bend a bracket or something. I'm going to change my thermal paste again in a couple days. Before I changed the paste it would freeze if I tried to overclock to 4.5GHz. But now I can run it at 4.5GHz and sometimes 4.6GHz. But, it quickly throttles down when it gets in the high 90's.
Richard's World good info, thanks! Yes I think the thickness of the Thermal pads is critical. I wish I waited for the i7 7820hk, it is a beast of a cpu... Good luck!
if i buy the aw 17 r4 the one with the gtx 1080 , does this always happens to every alienware laptops the overheat thingy, even just playing mid tier games
John Carlo Gulang I am finishing my review on my AW17 R4 gtx 1080 and i7 6820hk and the cpu averages 87 at stock and 95 when overclocked. By all accounts as of Dec 6th Dell has fixed the paste issue, I ordered mine November 23rd.. Stay tuned for the full review, I have done loads of benchmarks at various resolutions, stock and overclocked..
After around 50 mails, and 3 calls to the delivery firm to get the proof of when i got my laptop, I finally was allowed to get my money back for the faulty alienware 15... so my question now is what should i buy? Thinking about dell xps 13... do you know when the new dell xps 15 is coming out?
Mr. SnowMonster Great, glad you got that sorted! Out of the 15" models I have looked at I do like the MSI GT62VR 6RE. Have you looked at the Aorus X5? I think the fans are loud though. Or how about one of the stealth pro models? I would expect the XPS 15 to come out soon..
I guess this is just a problem with the 15 and 17 inch ones... My 13 r3 only needed an undervolt of 130mv to keep cpu temps from ever passing 80 degrees
Moring! I got my 15r3 with 1070, 6700hq on 30th Nov, so far no heating issues. I have tried csgo ( I am a hardcore csgo fan) , Farcry Primal and Rome2 total war . For Csgo CPU now stays under 75℃ , actually it jumps from 67℃ to 75℃. And 1070 is so cool it stays at 63℃. For Farcry Primal and Rome 2 total war CPU is even cooler usually at 70 ℃. 1070 always stays around 68 ℃ and sometimes it reached 70 ℃. For me these temperatures are totally acceptable. One funny thing is that the 1st day when I received my 15r3 the temperature of 6700HQ was actually higher. It reached 80℃ while I was playing csgo. After updating my 1070 driver and closed some background programs , strange thing happened. Its temperature dropped almost 10 degrees and I still can't find the reason for that. And I do think if you really have overheating issue the safest way is to return your laptop to Dell in exchange for a new one. One guy I know has damaged his 15r3 during the repasting procedure and DELL charges 1200 pounds for the motherboard replacement. It is not covered by the warrenty so please be careful doing that.
Lei Wang yes, my first route would be to RMA it, if that isn't an option I would have a certified Dell technician do the repaste.. Glad yours works great ☺️
Have you explored repasting other laptops to see if it drops the temps? Got my first "gaming laptop" few months ago (asus rog 502- actually you had one of the best reviews on it I could find before purchasing) but it does get rather loud. Normally I cap the framerate to keep the temps in the 70's but wondering if it would be worth repasting it since it made such a huge diferance on this Alienware.
bigbenisdaman hi there, I repasted my Aorus as it took me so long to do the review I missed my return period. I had to make it cooler.. My GT73VR is cool anyway so need to do that one and all the rest, apart from the GT62VR and Inspiron 15 (which are cool) I have returned. Sure, if I get to keep another one and it is hot I will repaste. Doing that liquid metal one was a confidence booster for me. One of my viewers had hot Temps on his Asus GL502VS and he repasted it and it helped him lots. He was previously playing with the back off, lol. You can also undervolt and I would try that first..
I'll try the undervolting, didn't know you could even do that witha laptop lol. Found a vid of a guy that took the heatsink's off of this model but dang, there's thermal paste everywhere! So it's just got me hesitate on it. As long as there's just load on either cpu or gpu it's chill, but when both loaded up like when playing gta v yea, it gets rather loud. Thanks for the info!
Hi, thanks for the awesome video, does anyone have liquid metal updates on their device?, especially people who carry their device alot, does it spill? is it safe?
omar ramadneh Thanks! In my experience you have to only put a small amount on and protect the surrounding area in case of leakage. I have had it on my Aorus x3 for 7 months and it is fine
Ok, I ran a OCCT stress test on my alienware 17r4 1070, and I was basically getting upper 60's for an hour and a half. Do you think I should've ran it longer???
peter somjit hi Peter, by all accounts it does affect the 13" model too, although I think to a lesser extent. I've been in touch with user who has done similar work as Iunlock and he has ordered some copper shims. I will probably do a similar interview based on that model too...
I don't think so, sure, there are people reporting issues from all manufacturers but there are a lot of good laptops out there. I have tested the Asus GL502VS, MSI GT62VR 6RE, MSI GT73 Titan Pro, AW17 R4 (i7 6700hq) and AW15 R3 (i7 6820hk) and the only one I had a temperature issue was the AW15R3.. Picking design with good airflow is important too and personally I think the MSI laptops I mentioned that have that nailed down. May not be the sexiest laptops around but they get the job done well. Thanks for watching !
brig 7981 Did you have your heart set on an Alienware? If so I wouldn't say not too.. Please watch my AW17 R4 i7 6700hq gtx 1070 review.. That ran cool and many people say theirs does too. True, there have been some i7 6700hq models that have been hot but they are less susceptible than the i7 6820hk. For example I am currently testing their AW17 with i7 6820hk and GTX 1080 GPu. The cpu is fine at stock clocks and that is 100mhz over the i7 6700hq. It's only when I overclock it that things get toasty. That is definitely an improvement..
OWNORDISOWN I don't know what to get honestly lol I see 120hz panels that sound good. which is the best 1070 laptop? Money isn't an issue. I just want best performance and best display
brig 7981 my favorite one so far is the MSI GT73VR. I reviewed that recently. It has the i7 6820hk cpu and it stays cool even when overclocked to 4ghz. It can be configured with a gtx 1070 for about $2000. It has the best speakers and it can be switched to integrated graphics manually for longer battery life. It has a 120hz 1080p panel with excellent color accuracy. A close second is the AW17 R4 with i7 6700hq cpu. You can configure it with the 2560x1440 120hz panel. Expect best battery life of 4 hours at 15% brightness. Speakers are great. It is thinner and more sexy than the MSI GT73VR. Make sure you go for the 99wh battery though. The MSI has better port options in my opinion but it lacks USB type C.. If you are thinking 15" models the AW15 is hard to beat as you will get good battery life but make sure you stick with i7 6700hq cpu.. I had the i7 6820hk model and it was a furnace.. It is still fairly heavy though. I did think the MSI GT62VR was better value though as you can get it for $1400, it's lighter than the AW but runs cool, has better speakers and again has better ports. It has a smaller battery though and is thicker. There are always going to be some tradeoffs.. Battery life versus power/gsync, thickness versus heat.. So far all the thin ones run hot and loud. Personally I skip sexiness for practicality and the GT73VR hits all the marks for me.
Wait, so if I were to put a copper shim in between the cpu/gpu chipset and the heatsink, I am not to use liquid metal? I am a newbie on disassemblying, Other people use the combo tho.
I would initially try some good thermal paste such as Gelid GC Extreme and see if that helps. That performed similar to Conductonaut in my Sager NP9873 and poses less risk. You can always try liquid metal after... I saw this video on a guy using shims but I would just stick to the paste/LM th-cam.com/video/RhT4uz6OwNQ/w-d-xo.html
is there a single gaming laptop on the market these days that can manage it's heat properly without all throttling bullshit? At first I thought "wow there's so much choice" when it comes to gaming laptops but the more I researched the less there's to choose from. MSI, HP, Dell, Asus, ect.. The only laptop that shouldn't have heating issues according to notebookcheck at least is Acer Predator but it has some flaws aswell. At the end of the day would you recommend getting AW R3 even with all these fixes?
OWNORDISOWN Great video. I have just subbed. I am thinking of getting a 15 R3 Gtx 1070 and had a few questions. 1 Do you offer a repaste service or could you recommend someone in the UK. 2 I notice that there is a 17" R4 available, Does this mean 15" R4 coming soon. Ta
Duppex Ellis hey there, thanks for the sub! The numbering scheme is a bit off, no the next refresh will be mid 2017 when they put in Kaby Lake CPU's.. Should give a bit better battery life. I actually live in the States now. I just did an interview with Iunlock who lives in Hawaii.. He might know someone.. Drop him a message on his TH-cam channel iunlock guru. You might be okay though. My AW 17R4 ran nice and cool. What CPU did you configure?
I removed the back cover of my alienware r3 15 and did repaste with kyronaut, undervolt and removed the back cover using with laptop cooler now running at 83 degree at max usage.
hey i bought the same laptop, except my cpu is i7-7820hk, i have overheat problems as well very bad temps exceeding 99C, how much should i undervolt without overcloaking and while overcloaking, i have done repaste btw. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that Karthik. Without overclocking you should be able to get -120mv so I would start there and tweak further until you reach instability. Overclocked - depends on the OC but usually -90mv is about the max.
OWNORDISOWN Hey! I just got my 15R3 and I shall say it's awesome! No backlight bleed and I ran Intel Extreme Utility Stress Test and CPU temps were max 77°C and GPU around 60°C. Probably I got the one with a better thermal paste. Im pretty happy!!!
He bro thanks for the help i just wanted to ask how to fix the heatsink i just dont get that point of rotating it because my core temperatures has a sloght difference and during gaming my temp hits around 97 for cpu and 90 for gpu ill use kryonaut thermal paste so i want to ask for the heatsink adjustment if you could help thanks...thanks in advance for help
I think you are referring to the bit where Iunlock bent one of the screw arms to allow more pressure at that point. He used some pressure paper to see where contact was and wasn't being made and adjusted it accordingly if I remember correctly.
@@OWNORDISOWN thanks brother can i get your whatsapp number as i wanted to ask you few questions please?i am very tired of my laptop and my warranty has ended so if you could help me with my question ill be very thanlfull of you..
Hey I just wanna say you make quality videos! I am about to get my Alienware 17 r4 gtx 1070 with cpu 7700 do you think it will over heat or they fixed that?
I just talked to a dell representative and he told me that the r4 17 does not have the panel issue so all good! Appreciate your videos and feedback to your viewers!
I also heard they have solved the overheating on the model with the 7700 cpu im also interested on buying it im pretty sure they use the same thermal paste though
Hey OWNORDISOWN. was it the real difference between the i5 and i7 on the alienware 15 r3 is thought the i7 was usually if you had a bunch of open tabs and the i5 was for gaming? is the i5 no longer relevant for gaming like battlefield 1?
Did I send you that review from Tomshardware? They showed that when paired with the GTX 1060 GPU the i5 was bottlenecking the GPU. Its not really a question that the i5 is poor at gaming rather than having a right balance between the GPU and CPU. Have GTX 960m GPU - then the i5 will probably feed that well enough...The GTX 1060, even though is a lower end Pascal card is very close (within 10%) of the desktop GTX 980 which was the fastest desktop GPU 2 years ago so it remains quire powerful.
Denton JC cheers mate. I have been trying to have to set up for a while. Iunlock has done a tremendous job and I think we can all learn some new stuff from him. I know Dell listens to what he has to say so that is a good thing!
dogb8t My MSI GT73VR currently maxed out at like 80 degrees when overclocked to 4ghz. Stay tuned for my full review as I do an extreme test for such situations. See my AW17 R4 video.. Thanks for watching!
Can I apply liquid metal to xps 15 5960? I am not sure if the heatsink or the lid of the cpu is aluminum. Also, is there any long term effect on the components? Thanks.
Thank you for your kind reply. I see reviews saying that coollabortory LM will stick together after several months, I am not sure if this will happen for the LM he is using.
David Nguyen hi David. I would see what your temperatures are like first, they should be ok if you are not overclocking. I had one viewer say that their i7 7700hq model ran in the high 90s and a Dell tech is coming to his house to fix it so that may be an option for you if you are in the same situation. I also have received good feedback on the temperatures of the new cpu's from about 6 people so chances are you will be fine. Good luck!
i went to a tech store today and trying to get a closer look at the alienware 17 r4 and the salesman said since dell bought the alienware a lot has come down. i was thinking about getting the kaby lake version i7 7700 with like gtx1060 but due to this issue on dell i am concerning about getting this laptop :/
David Nguyen did he provide you with any specifics? True, some of my viewers have had nightmare situations whether it be poor customer service or a poor quality product but a lot of people have been happy too. I had one viewer say his Kaby Lake i7 7700hq was hot so Dell is sending a tech to his house to repaste it. That is very good support. I have bought three of their new models and unfortunately they were all before the Thermal issues were fixed. Both i7 6820hk models overheated and they accepted my return without issue but the i7 6700hq 17" I got from Best buy was flawless apart from that annoying light flashing as it thought I had Tobii.. My main gripe is the lack of ports notably USB and SD card reader but they aren't deal breakers.
OwnorDisown The salesman said it is the "i7 6700 was having a lot of issue.(the alienware model before dell took over that he has is actually really well built but now he hasn't recommending alienware to anybody he also said Asus and Msi brand beat dell to it in term of gamming laptop." now im actually comparing between the Hp omen 17t it has 1050ti, and the alienware 17 r4 gtx1060 (im guessing the kabylake version 7700 they have fixed most issue?) when i saw the alienware 17 in store it is rather small
From what I have heard the new i7 7700hq models are nice and cool. I haven't heard about the i7 7820hk but I don't see why they haven't fixed that too..
Hi Steve, I have a 15R3 and would like to upgrade from the 1TB stock HDD to 2TB HDD but I don't know which HDD will suitable and fit into the bay. Is it just need to be 2.5"? Is the height of the HDD related? Also I wonder the 15r3 is supported 2TB of storage. Thank you!
Lol, I almost forgot, thanks that you like my comment 😂😂 do you think 5400rpm is fast enough, just for movies, games, music? I already have a ssd for os, 450gb not enough for gaming that why I tend to move game folders to the hdd. Btw, it is really hard to find a 2tb 7200rpm hdd which have a acceptable price, isn’t it?
Anh Quang Lê Văn no problem. 5400rpm is ok for watching movies but I think if you can get one of the hybrd SSD hard drives that would be quicker m.newegg.com/products/N82E16822179110
I would like to understund, about a year ago I tried to follow his guide, buying Liquid metal and trying that for first time in my life, I have been lucky it worked... I mean, I didn't destroy my system, but it didn't fixed it at all. My temperatures were damnly high anyway, even with downclocking. Maybe I've done something wrong, but I don't know to get help about it
You might be better off without liquid metal. The heat plate needs to make perfect contact and if there is any gaps then the heat won't transfer. Doesn't take much for these notebook cooling systems to twist a bit. Perhaps try some thicker paste like Gelid GC Extreme? Since even underclocking doesn't help it does suggest to me there is not good contact there.
@@OWNORDISOWN i'm not glad to say i already tried for first that kind of paste before following a tutorial by the guy in your video I guess. I might think it's my refurbished cooler?
@@DhalonTech I'm so sorry to hear this. It could well be the refurbished cooler. Other than replacing the cooler all I can suggest is downclock, undervolt and use a cooling pad... sorry!
Sir, is alienware 17 r4 the one with the overclocked cpu worth buying after 3-6 months from now, assuming that alienware will fix this issue . Much love.
John Carlo Gulang I think so, they have indicated that the issues are fixed as of now, but I would wait until old inventory is used up. I am editing my review of said such unit now which I got on November 23rd and it runs hot when overclocked..
Hi John, I see you asked if I was Australian but the comment is showing in the video. I am actually English living in the USA but would love to go to Australia. Where are you based?
so as a last question as of rn what would be a better option to buy alienware 15 r3 or msi g62 ...especially considering i do not want to open up my laptop..is this problem of thermal throttling completely fixed with kaby lake processors?
Manu Saraswat I've had a bunch of feedback in Alienwares i7 7700hq models and they have all, bar one, been good. I have had two feedbacks in the i7 7820hk and they were both hot. I have one of those coming in to check for myself. The Alienware 15R3 is the better laptop, especially if you get the 99whr battery. If you have the base 1080 p screen battery life can be over 6 hours. I think the speakers are better on the MSI GT62VR and that you have fan control on the keyboard itself. My GT62VR performs flawlessly and I love it. I am going to sell it though to fun other laptops. I did a smack down video between the two a few months back.
thanks for the reply and yeah u did compare them..nd found alienware better..but the heating complains were holding me back..now the only choice i have to make is b/w cheaper 6700 model or the costlier 7700 ... can u check out these deals and recommend me if the 7700 worth the price gap 1- 6700hq- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LY2I7B6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER 2-7700hq- www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2F85DV5083&cm_re=alienware_15-_-34-863-828-_-Product 3- 7700hq - www.amazon.com/Alienware-AW15R3-7338SLV-PUS-Gaming-Laptop-Generation/dp/B01NCOSCY7/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1
Manu Saraswat For the extra $200 I think the 7th Gen with the larger ssd is more preferable. 128 GB SSD is way too small to be useful at all. If you are still Conte GT62VR I am looking for $1200 and it has 256 GB SSD and gtx 1070.
i wish it was that easy..actually i live in India, not US , and there is almost no service of msi in india..let alone international warranty... dell is very flexible and supportive with these things.plus the service of dell is considered best in India..even better than apple.. so yeah all in all I am gonna buy the 256 gb 7700hq model PS. can i ask them for a discount if I don't need windows pre installed..i already have 3 windows licence
Thanks to this, and the other videos on the subject, I was able to argue the case with Dell over my early R3. Previously I was regularly getting into the mid 90s, fans blowing and throttling occurring. Mentioning these videos, I was able to get Dell to send an engineer, and he swapped out the cooling system, with included re-paste. Now running in the 60s under load. Phenomenal! Many thanks.
Christopher Farwell Thanks for sharing your story Chris. This shows that you have to be persistent with them and don't take the "100 degrees" is normal story they tend to give. I argued that my $3000 AW17 R4 ran the same speed as a $1400 msi gt62vr. That immediately got me an RMA number. Dell do have good support and I am glad they have sorted this out for you ☺️
Great video. I've got the 15 r3 with the i7 6820hk with the same issue. But don't matter what I try such as tension arm trick with the thinner thermal pad but it still gets really hot. Do you think the copper shim would fix my issue?
Thanks, glad you liked it. I assume you have tried the usual undervolting? You can certainly try the shim approach. How about underclocking the CPU slightly?
@@OWNORDISOWN did all of those didn't work out at all. Can iunlock guide me on how use the copper shim method along with a list of all the items I'll need for the mod?
@@OWNORDISOWN it's really frustrating that the temps are in the 90s most of the time playing a low graphical game. Can you guys help me out?? Thanks in advance
@@Carnage488 can you install Throttlestop and try undervolt the core and cache first. Try -90mv. If that still doesn't help lower the multipliers down a notch...
Nice video mate. I just received my 17r4 (1090 gpu and 2k screen) unit, like 5 days ago, at stock clock my ( i7 6820HK)cpu tempmax was 98°, pretty bad i mean. With Overclocked cpu it will be a probably shutdown . What should i do? Repaste or get a replacement with waarranty? i contacted DELL and they said to me: it's normal. But i really don't think so.
Marco Sabba hi Marco, sorry to hear about your laptop. It's a shame you didn't see my review on the same laptop and the smackdown with the GT73VR as it seriously throttles when it gets hot. So much so a laptop half its price beat it. You have two options really. Repaste as per iunlock's instructions or send it back. I sent two back because of that issue citing reduced performance and the claim was accepted immediately. You are paying a lot of money and expect to have that level of performance..
Hey I just got AW15R3-3831SLV this is gonna be my first Alienware... Should I return it. I think for some reason it doesn't come with the 99wh battery... so sad
TheTacticalNinja I read some of the reviews and one said it had a 99wh battery. That being said, I scanned over Amazon's return policy and they only accept returns if it is dead on arrival or unopened which might be a problem when you find out that it is the smaller battery. I would call Amazon and ask them.. Thanks for watching my video, ☺️
TheTacticalNinja according to Amazons website it says it is the 1920 x 1080 ips display. That one has a 60 hz display. People have reported that they have been able to overclock it..
Denton JC I did some undervolting on my AW15 R3 (see one of my videos, Temps did drop and I saw no impact on performance.) Given time I think I could have got lower temperatures
My 15 r3 bought on black Friday is finally shipped and I'm really worried about the issues. Beside the overheating problem there are people who ordered 1070 models but ended up receiving 1060 or even rx470 models. What a shame. www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/5gpvco/i_didnt_want_to_believe_all_the_bad_reviews_but_i/
I got an Alienware a few years ago. (The last good generation.) The first thing I did is repaste it with MX-4 thermal paste and it never overheats now. I have an 860M but so it's not an apples to apples comparison. Still though, this 75W GPU barely heats up enough to get my fan going and it still sits at a very confortable 75°C under full load. When I eventually upgrade, I'll get a three pipe cooler to replace the two pipe currently installed. This is due to my inspiron I got before. I love that Inspiron, it's a badass computer for what it is, but the default thermal paste was awful. I repasted it due to extreme heat. (165°F in the vent when checking with an IR laser.) After the repaste. It went back down to room temp when under full load.
Yes, good idea. I bought my wife the inspiron 15 7000 gaming and she loves it, I did too ! Since I started my channel I found out that quite a few people repaste their laptops. Something I never really thought about until I started the channel. I too repasted my Aorus x3 V7 and tutorials like the iunlock have done really helped me out. Thanks for watching and making a comment :)
This is just insane! 30 degrees less... I'm going to buy Alienware 17 next year propably in march or end of the february. Is it worth investing in 6820k? it is sad cuz in UK you can only buy 1080 with 6820k , not 6700hk. Is it worth it ? Costs lot more. Definitely will follow this tutorial of repaste
Chris Gond Hi Chris, as it stands now with the high temperatures making overclocking tough I would say not, but Alienware has assured us that they have now corrected the issue and I think it wise to wait till end February to make sure old inventory is depleted. I have an MSI GT73VR with i7 6820hk and GTX 1080 and it is fast and cool.. Thanks for watching. I have shot episode 2 with iunlock and we talk about their discussion with the Dell Engineers. Stay tuned.
has there been any talk about this issue with the alienware 13 oled ? if I buy one and mine has a temp more than 70c, does this mean that I have to take it to Dell?
Thanks for pointing this out. I´ve sent my AW15R3 6820HK/1070/UHD back in cause of this (my machine shuts down after 2 up to 10 minutes of load wich is not acceptable out of the box). So everything else was obviously fine, but i will not bent any stuff ... at max i do a repaste after 6 month´s or something but i mean, in price / what you get ... it´s awesome what they shipped here :( ... i hope they will fix that in manufacturing as i cannot see any successor to the Alienware 15 R3 :( I hope (i definitely hope) they can fix that with new heatpipes or spreaders or whatever in their manufacturing. I pretty loved this machine in any other focus (okay, sound is also not the top edge but okay) ...
Hi, no because i was within 14days so i can give it back (already picked up) and will receive my money back which i would preffer instead of waiting for any solution or technician / or damaging my overheating CPU in the meantime. Once the money arrived, I guess that I will screen the current Threads about to check if they already take any action in manufacturing, if so I will place a new offer. Point is, except the overheating issue the AW15R3 seems pretty awesome to me, an awesome keyboard and superb UHD Display (no light bleeding whatever)
P. S I only got the Asus G752vs oc edition cuz I couldn't wait for your a17 r4 review and I'll be getting it tomorrow my inky worry is that ppl are saying that the sharp edge of it makes it uncomfortable to use for typing
Alexander Yeh, that is what I heard and the speakers are at the back I believe.. I think it runs cool enough. Let us know how you make out! I really like the AW17 R4 i7 6700hq model I have (apart from the light bleeding I guess)
OWNORDISOWN thank you for your amazing reviews and fast replies so if it turns out to be indeed uncomfortable would u you recommend the Alienware 17 r4 or other laptopa in the same price bracket as the Asus G752vs oc edition
Alexander Hi, thanks! One thing to consider is that you can always get a pc from a custom builder eg Hidevolution/xoticpc /Excaliburpc.. I know the first two offer, for $35, to apply a different Thermal paste on. I have tried the MSI GT62VR 6RE a 15" model and that was good. The track pad was a bit iffy though. I am currently looking at the MSI GT73VR and the track pad is good on that. Everything is good apart from it is 2" thick at the back. I suspect the MSI GT72VR would be the same. Not sure about the switchable graphics on that but you can do it on the GT73VR which is nice. I also really liked the AW17 R4 with i7 6700hq, mine was cool and it has great battery life (1080p non gsync model). It only has 2 USB ports and no SD card reader so I don't know if that is a con for you. My review on the MSI GT73VR will be up next weekend ☺️
Thanks for this video! So helpful! Reading some comment I find something interesting: for who doesn't want to lose warranty but want do repaste is possibile to ask repaste procedure from dell with in-loco technichan? I am willing to even pay for this service but stay with this temp issue for one year until warranty expire is unacceptable. And repaste is the only solution. By the way, I want to tell everyone something I discover doing strees test: automatic managment of the fan never goes up to maximum rpm. maximum is 7000. Stock settings take it lower even in critical situations. I've tested prime 95 on cpu without manual control over fan rpm and temperatures goes up to the maximum limit of the cpu (100) and stay just a little below on average. But whithout start throttling. With manual control (setting it always on max rpm, 7000) temperatures never go over 85/88. The gpu, instead, on 7000 rpm never go over 60/61. The control of both rotation is the same, it seems you can't control differently the two fans. (For gpu stressing I used the unigine valley and heaven benchmark in loop) Room temp is 21 °C circa. All this is do on a Notepal U3 Cooling pad. With the three 15cfm 80mm X 10mm fans at their maximum. But I tested without fans and temp doesn't change. In the future I would mod it buying two 132cfm 80mm x 38mm fan to see if they give some benefit.
Nicholas Monacolli Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing the fan results! I find that when the fans blow full blast they are too loud so just keep them on auto. By all accounts, iunlock spoke with the chief engineers and all laptops purchased after December 6th will have new Thermal paste applied. He had one in house and confirmed this to be the case. I agree, for those who bought one earlier and was having issues it makes sense for a tech to come and do it. That is a great idea!
Hi! Again me. Alienware doesn't do repaste because "intel said that 100°C for the 6820hk is good". Yeah...we both think the same thing: bullshit. So I have to find a workaround cause repaste invalidate warranty. I really want to test the "trick" about folding the piece of dissipator that cause the huge difference in temps between cpu cores. Does that procedure invalidate the warranty? I don't understand clearly from the video
Nicholas Monacolli I think bending that arm doesn't affect the warranty, in fact repasting won't unless you break something.. And that is the dilemma. I agree, bending that arm seems the simplest and less invasive procedure, try and make good contact between the cpu and heat sink. Exklim says a big issue is the thickness of the Thermal tape /pads used, they are too thick. Nightmare really but I agree, try bending that arm a bit first, carefully!
lgnfve hi there, I believe he charges per hour but he has the process nailed down so he can do it quick. He has his own channel actually, channel name is iunlock guru. Perhaps you can leave a message there? We are doing part 2 today and I am hoping he can share his company contact info. Thanks for watching!
I wonder if there is any link between what was discussed, i.e., the new Pascal technology, the need for more power, etc.. and also the attempt to bring to market laptops with a thinner and thinner chassis. I recently talked to a well-known re-selller of all major brands here in the US (I cannot mention the company for obvious reasons). He basically warned me to stay away from Alienware and even the new Razer as the heat management has been a nightmare even for them to get it under control. In the end he told me, it is your money, but then do not come to me and say I did not warn you. Is going with a bigger chassis like, say, with the MSI GT73 or GT83 or the Sager/Clevo models alleviate the issue discussed in your video or it does not matter?
Maurizio Tiso I agree with you you. Thinner chassis mean smaller heatsinks.. My MSI GT73VR has 4 heat sinks each about an inch thick. The cpu and GPu each have their own cooling system unlike Alienware's that share it. My MSI GT73VR runs relatively cool. If I have it overclocked and so cpu intensive tasks such as rendering one of videos one core has reach 90 but with one press of a button I can activate the turbo fan and bring it to about 78. Alienware unfortunately embeds the fan control on the BIOS and in my test it only brought Temps down by 2 degrees probably because of the smaller heat sinks. Iunlock and his team have shown, however, by using something like liquid metal the Temps can be brought down much further. I recently uploaded part 2 where we discuss the changes made by Dell. Thanks for the comments!
Thanks Maurizio ! I like to mix it up a bit and have some discussion between subscribers/viewers. There are only so many lets play videos one can watch..
Hey OwnorDisown! I don't know if you still check the comments but I recently got myself the 15 r3 pretty cheaply off of amazon (i7 6700hq, 1060). I have yet to recieve my product but I am very scared that my model will come with problems. Are all the recent skylake models fixed?
Hey there, yes I check my comments regular and reply to them all if I can. Its still a bit of a lottery, I had an AW17 with the same CPU and that was nice and cool so you may have the same. Fingers crossed! Let us know how it works out !
Thanks for the sub ! I'm typing this on a new AW17 R4 i7 7820hk.. I wanted to test to see if this was fixed versus the i7 6820hk one I had..I will be uploading my results shortly ..even though it is does out perform the skylake model is still throttles. Very frustrating. You CPU uses less power so I'm thinking you will be OK. many people said the i7 7700hq models were fine. I will try undervolting too. My Killer Wifi card keeps dropping the signal on large downloads too so that sucks :(
Not to necro this video, but I bought the 17r4 basically on release (1440p/120hz, 1070, 6700hq, 16gb RAM) and have had little to no issues with it (no issues with the panel which was a big issue for others). A lot of folks have and I'm saddened that Alienware/Dell didn't fix this issue through more testing/advanced quality control. My cpu does run hotter than I'd like, particularly in games like BF1 (mid 80s C) but after seeing/hearing about other units (and other companies) that my temps are at or a little above average. My GPU doesn't run any hotter than 63C. I have since started using an external cooling fan and my CPU temps are never more than 78C under a heavy load (such as BF1) and the GPU stays at 59C.
Yes, I too had no issues on the QHD panel, no banding so I was pleased at that. The two models I had both had the i7 6820hk and they ran really hot. I have had viewers report their i7 6700hq models ran in the 90's but I think that cpu is less likely to have issues as its less powerful. I too had an AW17 R4 with that CPU and it was perfect.. My understanding is that the Kaby Lake models are much more consistent. Thanks for posting your findings !
yes you correct Anthony Sims i have same laptop same cpu and i use external cooling fan and the temp are very good with 1440p/120hz, 1070, 6700hq, 16gb RAM
I was planning to get 17 r4 with 1080, but looking at this stuff I am scared... Also im 99% sure that if u do it yourself you will break varanty. However it should be possible to get paste changed by going to dell shops and asking them to do it.
Žydrūnas Draugelis i'm not happy with my 17 r4 Noisy fan. High temperature during hero of the storm and all games in ultra. Battery used when connected in sector........ High price bad finitions.
Great video. Thank you for the info. Really priceless. It is truly sad that you buy a laptop for this kind of money and then have to actually fix it yourself while voiding your warranty. Mind-boggling.
Porucznik Borewicz I agree, it is totally crazy. I have tested the i7 6700hq AW17 R4 and that was cool as a cucumber. Guess it is luck of the draw.. Thank you for watching!
The issue i have on my 17 R4 is somehow I am hitting thermal throttle on my R4 without it hitting over 70c after my repaste. anyone else have this Issue?
One good thing about Craigslist is you see it in person, if you do then make sure to thermally test it. Get the buyer to run some games on it and have HWINFO64 installed to measure average and max temperatures. Check for any stuttering
That's for sure. I humbly ask you what would you suggest in the price range of €2500. Do you have something specific in mind far from AW? I was thinking MSI, maybe GT75VR 7RE but any thought of yours would be immensely appreciated.
menemme I had the GT73VR Titan pro and loved it. That was replaced with the Clevo P870TM , a desktop i7 8700k , 6 cores and gtx 1080 , both can be replaced or configured with sli GTX 1080s. Same qhd plane as the AW17R4 or with 4k. 5 USB 3 ports, 2 display ports, 2 thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI . Loudest speakers yet. On board DAC.
I dare to ask you a suggestion. I've been offered for 2200 euros a Asus Rog 752 VS with a slight different specs than what you reviewed (i7 7820, gtx1070, 1Tb SSD NVMe + 1TB Sata, 32GB RAM that goes up to 64). What do you think abt the offer? shouldi wai t a this point ? I'd appreciate any thought you have.
menemme sorry for the delay in responding, I was away all weekend. I would sit tight if you can. I'm pretty sure next month we will start to see a refresh in CPUs, possibly six core models and I would expect prices on the 7th generation to be reduced. Still, the configuration you mention looks good for the price. I wasn't totally impressed with it though. One thing I didn't mention in my video was after 5 days some of the silver paint underneath scraped off leaving black plastic underneath. All I did was carry it outside once for the display test.
Hi Ownordisown not only do you identify a problem others might not be aware of you, you make a connection with a guy who does a step-by-step guide on how to fix it. To say you deserve more subs and views is an understatement. Actually this should be made widely available to everyone buying next gen laptops.
Viri 369 Thanks so much, you made my day ☺️
Not at all :) It's not all praise, though you've gone above and beyond by actually contacting someone with a solution.

Wow, I never knew that. That sucks. I really enjoyed doing this video, Iunlock and his team were great.
thats kewl as HELL Stephen. YOU are getting answers!!! We all appreciate YOU.....
Thanks mate !
I've contacted iunlock to repaste my unit. If this unit had regular bad paste that'd be no problem for me to fix, but with the pads/paste/cpu sink alignment, I'm more than happy to let him perfect it.
Lee Entwistle Good call. I am sure he will do a good job for you!

Thanks, appreciate it :)
I picked up a 15 R3 with 7820HK, 1080 Max-Q for £1290 from a reseller on eBay, my CPU temps don't seem to want to go above 82'C, did I get lucky?!
I think you did, that is great! Although I guess the biggest test is when you overclock it because at stock it boosts only 100 mhz higher than the i7 7700hq...
OWNorDisown I’ve currently got it set at 3.7Ghz when all cores are active and seems very stable, if you’d want me to send over any images from tests of what seems to be a good unit to put a video out lemme know
@@DeckTested thanks for the offer 😀 I have 1080 max q data from my original Zephyrus review . Sounds like you have a winner on your hands !
Thank you again for good materials !Have a good one!
Thanks ! You too :)
Just as a quick update - I am from Germany and got my Alienware 15 yesterday! Production Date was January06.
CPU temps get up to 97°C - so nothing at all has been changed in the production! Thumbs up!!!
daniel lindl unbelievable, what cpu do you have?
the regular" I7 6700 - so nothing overclocked or so...
sent them an email today - I'll keep you updated on that case - hopefully I don't get one of those less than 100°- everything is fine guys
daniel lindl That is a surprise. Thanks for sharing. I thought it might have been the 6820hk.. Well, good luck!
so got my official reply today from DELL - they won't do anything.
Hey, those Forum links don't work anymore. Anyway to see the original thread or guide for repasting and thermal pad replacement?
Power Options
- Processor power management
-Maximum Power State
-Plugged in power around 90% to 95%
Done!
Thank me later :)
Yes indeed. :) Liquid Magic.
Stanley Chen Thanks for sharing your findings Stan ☺️
Hey there, if you or anyone can answer this I would greatly appreciate it.. Is there a possible way to do fan control on the 15 r3 model from HWinfo?
I was playing RDR2 , and faced some shuttering so I lowered the settings to as lowest possible , yet it's hitting around 96-99 degrees T_T
I had no issues playing RDR2 on Very High settings earlier, but now I am so done T_T
Any fix?
@@newspacecowboy yeah ... I have i7-7700hq, I used INTEL XTU and undervolted to -140v.. now CPU temperature is 89-90 while playing game
Even overclocked it goes up to the high 1900's/2000's but I haven't checked to see if the battery is discharging yet but will.
when traveling with liquid metal as tim in the laptop, will it spill on the motherboard?
You have to be careful. Only apply a thin layer, thin as possible.
@@OWNORDISOWN Good to know. Thank you.
OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy thanks for the tips. The laptop is still under warranty aswell. But I will try that u say.
Thanks for your input, and all your videos are great! I love them!
Cheers , that is great. If there is anything you want me to cover in my videos please let me know :)
I was not aware of any of this when I recently ordered my Alienware 17 r 4 78 20 h k with a nvidia 1080 and just recently I received it and after playing dragon age Inquisition for an hour it hit 97C I'm sending it back
Sorry to hear about that mate. I had exactly the same issue..
Mine hit 98 degrees Celsius but I dont want to return it
I want to pay Iunlock to repaste it with liquid metal lol
Hell yeah,,, Thanks for posting this despite how long ago it was perhaps you might have some new updates on cooling a 17R4?
Thanks ! The usual first steps are to undervolt and /or reduce the PL1 power limit
I have the 13 r3. Should I follow the Disassembly + Repaste Guide from the link you provided from iunlock? also do the thermal pads from fujipoly?
Phillip Marques hi Phillip, thanks for the question. I heard it was easier on the 13". Let me get with iunlock and see if he has a guide. Those Fujipoly pads look good to me but I will check with him for you.
thank you so much
Phillip Marques I spoke with iunlock and he said he would reply back to you directly. We will probably do a follow up video on the 13" when his team gets back from traveling.
you both are awesome thank you.
Stephen Jin what happens when you use DDU to uninstall all the video drivers and reinstall?
Thanks
Mexximus As they say "third time lucky"... Good luck. They have supposedly fixed the light bleed too.. Let us know how you get on ☺️
anyone on this post know what month and day Dell started addressing the thermalpad issue?
There were some bad i7 6700hq ones but certainly much less and your 70 degrees is just fine :)
Your blue screen issues may be software or hardware related.
Richard's World oh yes, definitely! What Temps were you seeing at stock?
Good luck!
Thanks.
if i buy the aw 17 r4 the one with the gtx 1080 , does this always happens to every alienware laptops the overheat thingy, even just playing mid tier games
Stay tuned for the full review, I have done loads of benchmarks at various resolutions, stock and overclocked..
ok
How would I go about contacting Iunlock in regards to repasting service on an AW17R4 1070 6820HK?
Hi Sean, the best way is to reach out to him on his channel th-cam.com/channels/QFbEr43UKo_HurlYcmplmA.html
Glad yours works great ☺️
Lei Wang i get 100degree no shit
Man!
This video made me sub you, really! Amazing problem detection and solution-focused work. Keep it up!
Thanks ! Really appreciate that 😀
I have an Asus 502VM 6700HQ, 2 of the CPU side standoffs are detached from the mb, is there a way to fix that? super glue?
That's probably the best. Don't want anything that is conductive. Good luck !
Ok, I ran a OCCT stress test on my alienware 17r4 1070, and I was basically getting upper 60's for an hour and a half. Do you think I should've ran it longer???
derickj1976 I would say you are good to go ☺️my Alienware 17r4 ran cool too. Good job!
OWNORDISOWN Thanks brotha
Is affecting the AW13R3 as well? I see that the trend is just affecting the 15's and 17's
peter somjit hi Peter, by all accounts it does affect the 13" model too, although I think to a lesser extent. I've been in touch with user who has done similar work as Iunlock and he has ordered some copper shims. I will probably do a similar interview based on that model too...
Yes. I will have some reports back on the 13 here very soon.
My 4th Alienware has just come. I got through three 15 R3's so tried my luck with a 17 R4 and got 100 degrees after 20 mins playing BF1. So done
Eddy oh my goodness! That is new production too. So sorry to hear about that Eddy.
Since this problem seems to be across the board for all manufacturers should I just wait for these Pascal laptops to get a refresh?
I don't think so, sure, there are people reporting issues from all manufacturers but there are a lot of good laptops out there. I have tested the Asus GL502VS, MSI GT62VR 6RE, MSI GT73 Titan Pro, AW17 R4 (i7 6700hq) and AW15 R3 (i7 6820hk) and the only one I had a temperature issue was the AW15R3.. Picking design with good airflow is important too and personally I think the MSI laptops I mentioned that have that nailed down. May not be the sexiest laptops around but they get the job done well. Thanks for watching !
Thanks! Excellent video and great content! Subbed!
animedude3000 Thanks ☺️
Hey there. I have seen a couple of reviews on the 15" model but not the 17" yet. I would like to give it a look.
OWNORDISOWN hey is their any prebuilt gaming desktops with a gtx 1060 i5? at around 730 dollars???
OWNORDISOWN I was going to buy a laptop but might not now. I don't want an overheating laptop.
brig 7981 Did you have your heart set on an Alienware?
Are these tips still applicable to the newer revisions? (15R4 / 17R5)
allen crausaz As far as I know, yes.
got it! thank you for confirming :)
I saw this video on a guy using shims but I would just stick to the paste/LM
th-cam.com/video/RhT4uz6OwNQ/w-d-xo.html
is there a single gaming laptop on the market these days that can manage it's heat properly without all throttling bullshit? At first I thought "wow there's so much choice" when it comes to gaming laptops but the more I researched the less there's to choose from. MSI, HP, Dell, Asus, ect.. The only laptop that shouldn't have heating issues according to notebookcheck at least is Acer Predator but it has some flaws aswell. At the end of the day would you recommend getting AW R3 even with all these fixes?
Tagic Mrooper Hi, I have tested an AW17 R4, an MSI GT73VR, MSI GT62VR and they were all OK so don't give up hope!
OWNORDISOWN
Great video.
Speaking of laptops and new pascal graphics any one got any idea how the new 17" Hp omen with the gtx 1070 is?
Demian Alexandru Watch Andrew Tran's review for the Omen 17
wrong thread....
I removed the back cover of my alienware r3 15 and did repaste with kyronaut, undervolt and removed the back cover using with laptop cooler now running at 83 degree at max usage.
Its a shame you have to go through all that to get a decent temp :(
Do you I have to repaste every time I remove the heatsink off the CPU and GPU?
I would, just to make sure you get good coverage...
hey i bought the same laptop, except my cpu is i7-7820hk, i have overheat problems as well very bad temps exceeding 99C, how much should i undervolt without overcloaking and while overcloaking, i have done repaste btw. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that Karthik. Without overclocking you should be able to get -120mv so I would start there and tweak further until you reach instability. Overclocked - depends on the OC but usually -90mv is about the max.
OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy Alright, Thank you for quick respond, will try it out.
if you ran this process, I would lose the guarantee of DELL?
thank you
Tempo Perso Of course you will lose it. Any damage caused by repasting will be paid by you. As far as I know the motherband cost 1200 pounds
Tempo Perso yes, if you damaged anything you could be in trouble. I would consider this a last resort unless you are confident in your abilities...
Hi! I just read it online that there is a gap between the screen and the bottom bezel and some adhesive sticking out. Do you have this issue?
Manthan Wadiwala on the AW15 R3? I don't have it anymore but I don't recall seeing that..
OWNORDISOWN Yeah im talking about the 15". Im probably getting mine next week. Hoping for it to be perfect.
Manthan Wadiwala can't wait find out what's its like ☺️
OWNORDISOWN Hey! I just got my 15R3 and I shall say it's awesome! No backlight bleed and I ran Intel Extreme Utility Stress Test and CPU temps were max 77°C and GPU around 60°C. Probably I got the one with a better thermal paste. Im pretty happy!!!
Manthan Wadiwala That is fantastic! Thanks for sharing your findings!

Khaled Almohaisen thanks mate! Yes, I have every confidence that you will be okay 😀
Thanks for the quick reply! One more thing, do you know if they fixed the qhd panels?
Khaled Almohaisen I've had two of them and I saw no banding. I hear that it is dependent on the person, some people are more sensitive to it..
Yeah I saw
And why its not done properly at factory for 2700$+ computer?
Thank you for the video dude, really appreciate it!
Denton JC cheers mate. I have been trying to have to set up for a while. Iunlock has done a tremendous job and I think we can all learn some new stuff from him. I know Dell listens to what he has to say so that is a good thing!
#OWNORDISOWN Does MSI GT 83/73 VR suffer the same heat problems as the ALIENWARE ? Because where I live, it gets to 50oC
dogb8t My MSI GT73VR currently maxed out at like 80 degrees when overclocked to 4ghz.
Thanks.
Hi, I have asked iunlock for clarification butI don't see why not as long as you protect the other components with electrical tape like he did.
季宇新 iunlock confirmed you can do so okay.
Thank you for your kind reply. I see reviews saying that coollabortory LM will stick together after several months, I am not sure if this will happen for the LM he is using.
季宇新 if applied correctly it can outlast the laptop 😁
im looking to buy the new alienware 17 r4 and im not planning to overclock, should i still try to repaste it for better performance?
OwnorDisown The salesman said it is the "i7 6700 was having a lot of issue.(the alienware model before dell took over that he has is actually really well built but now he hasn't recommending alienware to anybody he also said Asus and Msi brand beat dell to it in term of gamming laptop."
now im actually comparing between the Hp omen 17t it has 1050ti, and the alienware 17 r4 gtx1060 (im guessing the kabylake version 7700 they have fixed most issue?) when i saw the alienware 17 in store it is rather small
Yes, I think they have mostly fixed the issue with Kaby Lake. The speakers are good on the Alienware as is the battery life due to its big battery..
OWNorDISOWN Is this problem fixed now (when the Kaby Lake has come)
From what I have heard the new i7 7700hq models are nice and cool.
Thank you!
Anh Quang Lê Văn hi there, yes, you can get 7mm thick 2TB hard drive m.newegg.com/products/N82E16822179107

Thank you so much. I really appreciate on your work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
I would like to understund, about a year ago I tried to follow his guide, buying Liquid metal and trying that for first time in my life, I have been lucky it worked...
It cannot supply the gpu and cpu in combo when this last one is over 80% usage. It's sad :/
@@DhalonTech I'm so sorry to hear this. It could well be the refurbished cooler. Other than replacing the cooler all I can suggest is downclock, undervolt and use a cooling pad... sorry!
@@OWNORDISOWN I feel like the air in one side is not getting pushed as well outside, does they usually use the same RPM?
Sir, is alienware 17 r4 the one with the overclocked cpu worth buying after 3-6 months from now, assuming that alienware will fix this issue .
Much love.
John Carlo Gulang I think so, they have indicated that the issues are fixed as of now, but I would wait until old inventory is used up. I am editing my review of said such unit now which I got on November 23rd and it runs hot when overclocked..
OWNORDISOWN and that Sir, you deserve a subscription
John Carlo Gulang Thanks!
Hi John, I see you asked if I was Australian but the comment is showing in the video. I am actually English living in the USA but would love to go to Australia. Where are you based?
I have an Alienware 17 r4 with the i7 6700 hq and the 1070 and the temperature is good for me but sometimes the center of the keyboard get really hot
yes, that where the GPU and CPU are..
Can I use K5 Pro to fix thermal pad problem ?
Trung Le I don't see why not, I'm sure that is what my Aorus x3 v7 has. I'll ask iunlock to make sure.
Does the alienware 17 r3 suffer from heat issues too?
mike k I have the 15r2 and that was fine
so as a last question as of rn what would be a better option to buy alienware 15 r3 or msi g62 ...especially considering i do not want to open up my laptop..is this problem of thermal throttling completely fixed with kaby lake processors?
I did a smack down video between the two a few months back.
thanks for the reply and yeah u did compare them..nd found alienware better..but the heating complains were holding me back..now the only choice i have to make is b/w cheaper 6700 model or the costlier 7700 ...
can u check out these deals and recommend me if the 7700 worth the price gap

Manu Saraswat For the extra $200 I think the 7th Gen with the larger ssd is more preferable. 128 GB SSD is way too small to be useful at all. If you are still Conte GT62VR I am looking for $1200 and it has 256 GB SSD and gtx 1070.
i wish it was that easy..actually i live in India, not US , and there is almost no service of msi in india..let alone international warranty... dell is very flexible and supportive with these things.plus the service of dell is considered best in India..even better than apple..
so yeah all in all I am gonna buy the 256 gb 7700hq model
PS. can i ask them for a discount if I don't need windows pre installed..i already have 3 windows licence
Manu Saraswat that makes total sense indeed. I don't think they offer that, I wish they did. Can't hurt to ask I guess..
Dell do have good support and I am glad they have sorted this out for you ☺️
Thank you for the video! I just bought my 17 R4 and am already gearing up for heat issues and it’s still hasn’t arrived yet
Thanks! Have faith, you will be OK :) Good luck !
Nice video. when is part 2 with 1080gtx version teardown
Paolo Amador we will be aiming to do it one week ☺️
@@OWNORDISOWN unfortunately I did even go as low as 150mv and underclock and it still got over 85vc
OWNORDISOWN ubfortunately i saw ut videos too much later. anyway repaste could compromise warranty ?
nice video anyway. got a subriscriber
Marco Sabba it would if you damaged anything.. I think Dell can send a tech to your house to so it though.. Worth asking. Thanks for the sub!
so does the bios update fixed the thermal issue?
Grab Malaysia no it's worst now
Hey I just got AW15R3-3831SLV this is gonna be my first Alienware...
Okay. I guess a 68wh battery works also.
It just seems odd why it's $1,600 when on the dell you can do a custumize a 15 r3 with better wifi 99wh batter and 16gb of 2400 ram for only $1500
Do you know the refresh rate of the panel?
TheTacticalNinja according to Amazons website it says it is the 1920 x 1080 ips display. That one has a 60 hz display. People have reported that they have been able to overclock it..
Does undervolting the CPU affect the performance? I've heard it can reduce the temp by 10C
What a shame. www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/5gpvco/i_didnt_want_to_believe_all_the_bad_reviews_but_i/
Crazy. One of my subscribers had a similar experience, totally shocking. Good luck !
Stay tuned.
has there been any talk about this issue with the alienware 13 oled ? if I buy one and mine has a temp more than 70c, does this mean that I have to take it to Dell?
sup3rskrull all the reports on the new 7th generation models are positive 😆
thanks!
good to hear
still thinkin about the 1070 model
Thanks for pointing this out. I´ve sent my AW15R3 6820HK/1070/UHD back in cause of this (my machine shuts down after 2 up to 10 minutes of load wich is not acceptable out of the box). So everything else was obviously fine, but i will not bent any stuff ... at max i do a repaste after 6 month´s or something but i mean, in price / what you get ... it´s awesome what they shipped here :( ... i hope they will fix that in manufacturing as i cannot see any successor to the Alienware 15 R3 :(
I hope (i definitely hope) they can fix that with new heatpipes or spreaders or whatever in their manufacturing. I pretty loved this machine in any other focus (okay, sound is also not the top edge but okay) ...
LEJ Copteros Are they sending you a replacement? Thanks for watching and good luck.!
Is that 3 screw heatsink the cpu heatsink or the graphics card heatsink?
Its the CPU heatsink. The three screw design doesn't help with providing an even pressure..
So I got the Asus G752vs oc edition would u recommend the Alienware 17 over it even though it needs repasting
Alright will be waiting for your review and I'll decide after watching it thank you so much kind sir
Nightmare really but I agree, try bending that arm a bit first, carefully!
what is iunlocks contact info and what do they charge to do this work ???
lgnfve hi there, I believe he charges per hour but he has the process nailed down so he can do it quick.
Very informative. A+ This is what TH-camrs should do all the time.
OWNorDISOWN Wicked fast reply! Although not a straight of an answer, it soothes my mind. I will keep you updated. Thanks, from a new sub!
My Killer Wifi card keeps dropping the signal on large downloads too so that sucks :(
OWNorDISOWN aw hopefully you can get that fixed soon. I hope my model just doesn't exceed over 80 degrees. I will be waiting for the new video!
Just ran Mafia 3, stock settings and CPU at 96...Ouch !
Update the bios. Set cpu limit to 80-90% in battery settings and turn game mode one during your gameplay
I was planning to get 17 r4 with 1080, but looking at this stuff I am scared... Also im 99% sure that if u do it yourself you will break varanty.
However it should be possible to get paste changed by going to dell shops and asking them to do it.
Žydrūnas Draugelis yes, I think getting it done by a Dell certified technician is the sensible route if you don't want to RMA it.
Žydrūnas Draugelis i'm not happy with my 17 r4
Noisy fan. High temperature during hero of the storm and all games in ultra. Battery used when connected in sector........
High price bad finitions.
I’ve spoke with technical support it won’t void your warranty.
Your warranty doesn’t get voided.
The issue i have on my 17 R4 is somehow I am hitting thermal throttle on my R4 without it hitting over 70c after my repaste. anyone else have this Issue?
Good thing I saw this video
Someone was selling this laptop on craigslist...I dont think I want this drama.
One good thing about Craigslist is you see it in person, if you do then make sure to thermally test it. Get the buyer to run some games on it and have HWINFO64 installed to measure average and max temperatures. Check for any stuttering
Can they make a video, showing how to dissemble the laptop. It would be great to have the video instead of pictures.
Firudin Imani I'll ask iunlock to post one on his channel iunlock guru. Good request!
OWNORDISOWN Thanks!
March 2018 and notebooks are still leaving factory with the same problems. Unbelievable.
menemme That's crazy. Think we need a complete new design..
