  • Managing to find a short spell in the bad weather we have been having I took a chance on a shore fishing trip for an Undulate Ray and it paid off brilliantly. Fishing a South Coast beach with my good friend Alan Brown the session was cut short by the dangerous seas but it was worth it!!
    Here is the link to my Pulley Rig tutorial and some link for the tackle I use. I hope this helps.

    Your tying, bait and setup look a work of art John , I can remember tying a granny knot for the weight and another granny knot for the hook, 2 feet between, wipe my hands on my trousers after threading a king rag on, half off it would fly off as I cast, no bucket, mum used to go mad , omo and a manual washing machine, didn’t catch much, but I was happy, it was 49 years ago👍 forgot to say congrats 163k now, 🎉

    Well done for your target species, good size as well. Funny that you mentioned about the fox. On my last fishing trip, I caught a coalie, as it was gill hooked and bleeding, I dispatched it and gutted it. Left the fish to bleed out on the ground, a few minutes later I wanted to put the fish in a bag, turned around and the fish was gone, never saw or heard anything. As it was dark I am sure it was a fox.

    Superb video John, I felt very relaxed just listening to the sound of the waves in the background. Fine undulate ray and interesting identification of all the fish eggs. Foxes stealing bait is common in Dungeness in Kent. You never see them stalking you. Upon your return from the waterline after casting or retrieving you see them making off with your bait. I like the builders bucket tip. It contains all of the mess too... Genius! Thanks mate! 👍

    Hi John. Great night by all accounts. My only experience with a ray was a special stingray which had a nickname of 'Jesus". The whole episode was one of my most exciting over here. I did not see the actual ray, but when it took my line, it was the only time that my line was stripping away at pace, even with full drag on. It is a shallowi-sh estuary on an ebbing tide and from the edge of our camp site. Jervis Bay. As the ray made it's move to escape ( this is not exaggerated ) it was so huge that everyone could see the bow wave that it caused. All I could do was wonder at what I was seeing close up. It easily snapped my line which was not rigged for this type of catch.
    Still pumped I went to the office and mentioned it to our host and he immediately said "that would have been Jesus". He said it frequents the estuary regularly and was about 1.8 mts across .
    Now there are heaps of stingrays seen around these parts and they come in to the cleaning station for a feed from those who are lucky enough to catch fish. Pelicans fight the rays for a portion lol.
    But I do have question. How do you handle a stingray. As you know, they can be dangerous with those barbs and I am wary of even small ones. Nice video and still chilled from watching it, lol.
    Regards, as usual to you and your family.

    Great video John
    90%of my sea angling is off the beach at night, and it can test the mind more often than not
    As long as you can get out of the wind and rain,sleet, snow its tolerable for a few hours
    Fresh bait is the biggest issue for me, not able to dig for more than about 10 minutes, then everything hurts, im just knackered sweatingout of breath,
    Heart trouble, no stamina anymore, park close to beach and stay away from steep hills or embankments, usual old man stuff hahaha im only 62 should be out jogging 4 times aweek
    or in the swimmers 4 times, to much like hard wok, rather watch you do the hard stuff and i'll sit with a brew.
    Good luck with next video, regards to family all stay safe.

    Wow! You are SO dedicated to your craft! Out there in that nasty weather! Honestly, it's not that bad considering we just went through a hurricane here, lol! But, then again, we weren't trying to fish, lot! I was wondering if your rig would work down here, as it seems any fish would jump all over that rig. Of course we have different fish here but damn, that looks like something that would would work here. Your dedication to what you do is as usual is amazing! • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      - That is one of the things I love about fishing. At its base, the principles are universal. Fish are fish throughout the globe. So rigs that work here in the UK can often work in New Zealand or Alaska or Africa. You often just have to change the bait/hook style.

    My and ears for all good things on the beach, boat, coastal foraging, history and so much more returns with a superb night fishing video (the only type of sea fishing I have done and probably can afford). You nailed it with that Ray well done. Love the how to handle fish tips, I would use my carp sling and my carp mat for unhooking the fish, would not have though to use a bucket though so great tip for me. I have never been in the position where I have caught lots of dogfish but then I suppose its like snotties (bream) taking your carp bait and you get a bit fed up with them. Thanks for posting and breaking up a very boring evening.

    Congrats on your first undulating ray😊 the night session brings back memories of night fishing with my grandad on seaton sluice beach (Sandy) ! Beach caster rod, tripod, bucket of bait, tackle box but no shelter and bloody freezing. He used to make doorstopper ham sandwiches and a couple of flasks of tea for the session which warmed you up! Seeing your session made me wish he was still here.

    Good catch John, curiously prehistoric in appearance, and very interesting to see the egg cases. I was going to ask if it would be possible to take one and leave it in water to watch it eventually hatch out. But tonight on Autumnwatch they showed precisely that. They had some egg cases, then showed a Flapper Skate egg case. Huge. largest skate in the UK. I had no idea such animals exist in UK waters. Thanks again for your video, entertaining as always.

    If you put the bluey inside a small squid body leaving it whole
    Then use the hook to hold the body shut ...then pierce it with a baiting
    needle And that will save you on the baiting elastic ...

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      - I think the bait elastic is necessary for keeping your bait intact for longer. And also, the smallest squid in that pack would have made a 4oz bait by the time you pack it with bluey. 😉
