    I agree with you John that jump scares are the most cheap and ineffective shortcut imaginable for a horror film maker however, I also feel like they can also be utilized effectively almost as a tension release method if they are utilized effectively.
    The best ones I think tend to come from when the movie is just so effective at winding up tension that a jump scare is almost mandatory at that point to just give you a quick “Oh Fuck!” moment and then it releases the tension just enough so it can start to build up and wind tighter and tighter to the point of needing to break it with another jump scare otherwise the movie would be exhausting.
    I hope a lot of horror fans know what I mean, to me it’s almost got the same effect of throwing in a little joke here and there in a horror movie when the tension is at it’s highest point possible to snap the tension to let the audience have a little bit of relief before it immediately winds it up tighter than before tension wise.
    I know a lot of people tend to hate jump scares and I am mostly on that boat with them but, once in a while if they are set up properly I think they can be effective, I just know a lot of filmmakers tend to not know how to effectively utilize jump scares as a tool and not their entire movie is the problem we have with modern horror in my opinion.

    I just got home from watching it! Greatly enjoyed it and would rate it a solid 7.5/10. The movie's strengths are it originality & creativity, and the acting. Unfortunately, I feel the narrative resolves into a pretty standard possession tale and fails to capitalize on the first two acts
    Moreover, I have a strong feeling that regardless of its theatrical run this movie will be VERY popular in the ancillary markets and is likely to become a cozy Halloween tradition for horror enthusiasts

  • @guitarguru.3572
    @guitarguru.3572 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Jump scares don’t equate to true horror to me, either. Being startled and being scared are two entirely different things. There’s rare occasions when it can be made to work, but it requires more thought and effort than most directors are willing to put in. “Cheap” is definitely the most appropriate term when describing jump scares. Situational horror is so rare anymore that I’m glad to hear that any movie relies on it instead. Based on your analysis, I’m definitely going to watch this.

      @@geekinwithJamesHancock Ridley did it in such a way that it was comic relief, the characters onscreen even laughed at the situation, that made it more genuine than just a random cat jumping out of nowhere caterwauling. Plus it has been done a trillion times since making it extremely tired.

    I can always count on u to spotlight movies I would like to see. But I think I watched to much of your review on this one. I should have stopped after about five minutes in. Now I know too much about some of the players and the plot. But maybe by the time I see this I will have forgotten most of what you liked about it.
