    A hint about starting on inside corners. At 3:25 he mention cutting off the tabs to begin a corner. This will leave an unmatched pattern in the corner. If you cut a tile sheet in the middle or so and put each piece together at the corner the pattern matches and looks more finished. I made this mistake in my 1st corner before recognizing this. Good thing I started out in a relatively hidden corner.

    • @alnsmclm
      @alnsmclm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried this and the issue I had is you didn’t have the overlap section on one side. Granted the open patterns will match up like a puzzle but it’s not the same since you don’t have that overlap space and it’s a bit of a pain to line up

    • @klee9016
      @klee9016 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alnsmclm I am thinking to simply score the first (corner) sheet and tamp into corner but then the sheets on "side wall" would be reverse installed, right? Does it matter?

      I used to do wallpapering. Just like that, you cut the right edge at a corner to make a straight edge to butt up against the corner. You can then cut the left edge of the piece adjacent to that and butt it right against. It may seem counter-intuitive to not have the patter match, but the eye doesn't seem to care about the match at a corner. I have done many, many rooms this way, and no one ever asks to have it redone. It may be an optical illusion, but maybe not. However, the eye doesn't look for a match, perhaps because the corner is a natural split in the view. You may do it either way, good luck no matter what. :)

      Also, if you cut off just the tabs, you should keep them for the end of the run, where you will want to compensate for the indentures by adding the pieces on. In other words, you will need those cut-offs to finish the straight line at the other end.

    Thank you. I learned the hard way but if your tile has uneven height of individual stones that you need to line up start from the right and work your way left. This way the white underlay will always line up with next tile facing left. Your tile was equal so you could turn either way. Mine I needed to align the tiles one way only. I’m glad I learned this on a small pantry backsplash before I started the big kitchen job. Thanks again though for showing us.

    First of all, I very much appreciate that you, as independent individuals, took the time to video record and post the installation of your tile to TH-cam. I've watched the video seven times now and have found that it has left far more questions than answers for me. This isn't a bad thing because their questions that would certainly come up during the course of my upcoming installation so it's best that I address them now.
    There are a ton of questions that just aren't addressed in the video that I think are absolutely necessary in order to do a nice looking installation. Especially when the installation is going to be on more than just one wall space.
    I'll refer to the left wall as wall A; the right wall as wall B; and the middle wall as wall C.
    1) Why were walls A and B installed prior to wall C? I cannot figure out how one can anticipate a smooth flow when the center wall is done after the side walls. Additionally, the manufacturer expressly says to work from right to left but in this video the only wall that that is being done on is wall A.
    2) There are no close-ups of the inside corners but from the distance it appears that the corners are rather chopped off and non-flowing. It seems to me that, rather than lop off the tabs on the edge of each corner tile sheet, that they instead be placed on the adjacent wall thus allowing a flowing and continuous alignment of "bricks". The inside corners, to me, look like they are chopped (bricks abruptly end and suddenly change shape and color) and a rather large "caulk type line" is in each corner. What would not work about putting those tabs on the adjacent wall instead so that a flow is maintained?
    • Wall B, in the video, appears to have several tiles peeled back up and replaced. The video is in fast motion so very hard to follow what the second guy is doing.
    • Wall C didn't seem to have a plan to it because it was done last. I can't seem to follow the reasoning or logic for doing that wall last as it would be impossible to make the corners flow smoothly. Again, the inside corner bricks would abruptly change size and color at each corner.
    • This video features the peel and stick sheets being installed over existing, grouted tile which, of course are not a level surface. Wouldn't it be wise to go over that existing tile first with some sort of a leveling grout (off top of my head but there must be some kind of preparatory "compound" to level surface) so that there would not be areas for moisture or air to accumulate? Something tells me that if one is going to be putting a vinyl product over any surface that the surface should be level. Moisture and air have a sneaky way of creeping into the tiniest of crevices.
    • On subject of putting peel and stick over existing tiles, it seems counterintuitive to expect something to stick to such a very slick and smooth surface such as the original tile presented here. Is it really ok not to rough up the surface? Even when reglazing cabinets I had to rough up the existing polyurethane because the new stuff needs to GRIP INTO the old surface, not sit on top of it. I would speculate adhesive would follow the same laws of property.
    • Out of absolutely nowhere the tile sheets appeared on wall C including the tile sheets behind the stove. How was the determination made on how far down behind the stove to go to? Should the tiles go fully down to the bottom by the floor in order to alleviate the possibility of air or moisture getting in or were they simply installed for aesthetic means without regard to longevity? Was the stove pulled out to install the tile sheets or were they just kind of pushed behind the top of the stove?
    • I either missed or don't see the part about how to get the tile sheet up behind the fan or, as many of us are stuck with these days, the over the range microwaves that tend to break and have to be replaced all too often in which case, if not tiled behind one will have a gaping nothingness if new appliance is not same size as old.
    • I missed the part about measuring the outlets and cutting to accommodate them. I've not yet started mine but I have a good idea. What about using the plastic to create a template? One can use a marker to make an X and, since it's transparent, one can easily see if they've cut enough or too little.
    • Even though I watched the video seven times, I missed how the second row of tiles was chosen and cut. This question came up after I got done watching the video, and I'm glad it did, because I'm going to have to do two to three rows myself and they are not all going to be 12 in tall so I miss the part about how to choose the proper cut within a tile sheet to enable a good flow from the first row to the second row to the third row.
    I appreciate this video very much, especially since you don't represent the manufacturer, but I have doubts that it would be a good idea to put these tiles over existing, grouted tiles without any type of leveling medium. I'm also very concerned about having cut those tabs off the end tiles because there's just no fluidity from one wall to the next. It looks like it just abruptly ends.
    These are things that would certainly come up when one is right smack in the middle of installation so I'm glad that I watched this video so that they're coming up now before I'm standing in the kitchen in a bind trying to figure out what's my next move.
    I hope to hear back some comments before I get the tile started in my kitchen.
    Thank you!

      Those are all very valid comments! I think it is not recommended to go over such tiles with the grout making grooves. Also, I am not sure if those new tiles are plastic or metal. Some manufacturers have both... but they surely would handle differently. Next, I think they just retiled around the top of the electric stove! Big blunder! Also, I think if there is a window, one has to start with a complete sheet going along down from the window sill, straight along the crease from the sill to the wall below, so that one does not end up having to cut off half a tile at the window sill corner. It would look wonky! For the outllets on the walls, I'd probably do a stencil for each to determine where exactly I want to cut out the hole. The guys here were definitely off some to the right side... and very narrow along the left side of that receptacle on the first wall!

      I was able to complete my installation on 4 wall surfaces behind sink and stove and they came out beautifully. The instructions within this video are appreciated, because the gentleman took the time to create it, but they don't work. It really took a bit of planning and common sense but mostly math. People who come into my home and see my tile cannot resist reaching out to "pet" it. It has been quite some time since I put it up and it is adhering with absolutely no problem from the tremendous heat that my stove gives out (I have learned elevated cooking) or the intense humidity from my sink as it takes extraordinarily hot water to scrub stainless steel cookware.
      I sanded the walls down so that they were quite rough thus effecting an excellent medium to adhere to and then wiped them down with industrial strength vinegar before starting to make my placements.
      I wish I were able to upload pictures here but It seems impossible to do so. I might mention that I used the very deep and rich "Art3d 10-Piece Peel & Stick Kitchen/Bathroom Backsplash Tiles, 12" X 12" Colorful Marble Tile Design in the Multi color". I blundered on the first box because I was following the instructions within this video but the manufacturer was kind enough to send a brand new box to start over with! 😁 What an absolutely phenomenal company! Removing those tiles was quite tedious because of the prep work that I did to ensure that they would not peel off easily. My method certainly proved effective! LoL! It did take extra time but the end result is is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. They beautifully enhances the cabinets that I refinished from the cheap construction grade oak to a rich, but customized mix of a Bombay mahogany followed by several coats of water-based polyurethane (chosen because it does not yellow like oil based will). BTW, not relevant to the tile installation but since I mentioned the cabinets, one literally DOES have to take them down completely and take the doors and hinges off and completely strip them before actually refinishing them elsewise will be very poor quality and, even if it looks okay in the beginning, it will start peeling.
      I've been out of work for 3 and 1/2 years now due to the debilitating effects of cancer treatment and try to find something constructive to do. It took me much longer than it should have because I followed TH-cam videos that really leave a great deal out. In defense of those that try to create these videos it is darn near impossible to actually provide proper instruction because it does involve math and calculations.
      I absolutely love my tile and, as already stated guests always feel the need to reach out and touch it so so it obviously must be appealing.
      The other plus side is that if anticipates selling their home at some point and potential buyers have a different taste, they don't have to virtually bulldoze the wall to change the tile like they do with ceramic tile.
      I will be more than happy to advise anyone undertaking the job on how to do it properly. 🙂
      EDIT: I forgot to address the issues about the outlets and light fixtures. You have to take the light fixtures down and the covers off of the outlets so that you can do proper cutouts that will be hidden behind them. Also, to finish off the edges cut strips of tile vertically so that there is a clear stop and start on each of the walls. There should be an "L" shape on each the stove wall and the sink wall and the edges finished with vertical placement as opposed to some strange looking drop off. For the outlets measure very carefully and create an "X" slit so that if your measurement is off your tile is not ruined. Since the electricity you've obviously turned off, I hope, before starting the project, you can use a very sharp box cutter refine that area once you have it up. Same with the light that goes over the sink. I'm not absolutely positive that that is clear so I will say that you simply make the slits so that the tile is fully intact as opposed to making square or round cutouts thinking that they are precision because, odds are are not. With my "X" method of slits it is completely impossible to make an error and ruin your tile sheet.
      They are super easy to clean too with just a slight wipe of diluted vinegar.

      That’s so excellent! I’m so happy you did this for and by yourself! I’m adding this piece of advice for anyone watching this in the future, before you install these, fill in those grout lines with some spackling paste so you have a smoother surface for these to stick to. This is an essential tip for a homeowner. It creates less bumps and ridges during and after application. If you’re just adding these for a rental unit, there’s no real reason to spackle/smooth the area. You’ll likely have to remove and replace these after 2-3 tenants. The cost to purchase and install these is nominal compared to the increase in value a rental unit with these added (aesthetics and appearance go a long way with income property).

      @@fancythisgirl3 Yep. I'm dumbfounded at how much is left out of this video. That seems like absolute common sense to me and I can't figure out, to save my life, why any surface would not be leveled prior to placing something as thin as these tiles on top of it or anything on top of it, for that matter.
      Since these people that made the video don't work for the manufacturer (I don't think 🤔) I didn't want to say too much about it but as the hours tick on after I've watched it I'm concerned that people will watch it and just start slapping these peel and stick tiles up and the way that it's done in the video there's no way on earth that they are going to stay put.

    I suggest turning the pieces and mixing them. If not then it results in a repeat pattern as observed on right area creating a line. Does anyone else see this? I also see the line on the left yet closer to the counter. To avoid a repeating pattern make sure the sheets are intermixed. This is similar to hanging wallpaper where depending on the pattern, each sheet should be reversed. Play with it before mounting as I could not live with this outcome

    • @fancythisgirl3
      @fancythisgirl3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sanding is essential if you’re going to paint the wood. Paint won’t last long without it. And if you’re already sanding, you might as well stain instead. It preserves the wood and looks way better. I’d suggest, if possible, to remove the trim on the cabinet doors and adding squared trim to make them shaker style. Another top for anyone watching this in the future, before you install these peel & stick squares is to fill in those grout lines with some spackling paste so you have a smoother surface for these to stick to. This is an essential tip for a homeowner. It creates less bumps and ridges during and after application. If you’re just adding these for a rental unit, there’s no real reason to spackle/smooth the area. You’ll likely have to remove and replace these after 3-4 tenants. I’ve been wanting to do this too, but I wasn’t sure if it would stick on ceramic surfaces. Most videos I’ve seen, people stick them directly on the wall. My kitchen already has ceramic tiles but they’re ugly.

    You need to replace the electrical plate covers with a darker color to contrast against the backsplash. It would just dress it up a bit. Also a color that matches the cabinets would've been better, like earth tones or brown/beige/bronze ones (in this instance).

      @@emilypoole5686 I assume Emily that that is your opinion? I just wanted to mention this little tidbit of info.... so you know for next time..... YOU are as welcome to your opinion as I and every other person are welcome to ours. It would however be nice without the attitude.. I never said it wasn't a great video, and if you need a break... by all means... take one. The comment was made to the channel owner, not to you. It's really for them to decide if it gives them ideas for future videos. I didn't realize this channel had a comment police. Had I said something awful or nasty, I could better understand someone making a snarky comment in reply, but I wasn't being insulting, just giving some suggestions for them to better their future vid's. If they want to apply them fine, if not that's fine too. He's presenting a video on DIY decorating.... it's always a good idea for things to blend and match when doing so, it makes the video's more appealing to more people.
