Thank you for your tutorials! They have been a complete game changer for my processing after getting everything I could out of APP. You demystify Pixinsight. Cheers, Frank
Great tutorial series. Thank you for your time and knowledge shared. I was about to get rid off pixinsight having tried so many other puzzling videos here and yours finally makes sense.
really good tutorial ,, i have been using photoshop and siril for a few years now and was never happy with my results , i downloaded the trial version of pixinsight and the rc astro tools , cant believe how much better my images are , thanks very much for making the best video i have seen on using this software.
Very impressive series. I’m still a beginner but ready to start learning the GHS. On a side note dealing with the Astro metric solution, in what units do I enter observation time? Do I use GMT time, my local time using 12 hour clock or a 24 hour clock?
Im new so please forgive this dumb question. Is the GHS stretch in addition to STF? Or are they handled separate. Is part 3 a continuation from 2 or are they different approaches to workflow? I purchased all the rc astro additions and im trying to build out a set of process icons to make learning a little easier. Thank you in advance!
GHS is instead of STF. Part 2 tell you the basics and in Part 3 you learn all about the advanced processes and scripts incl the XTerminators. So just watch them in sequence and all will make sense.
@viewintospace Thank you sir for your reply. This video series helped tremendously. I purchased all the RC tools and added Graxpert as well. Night and day difference. Thank you again!
"The length of 2 coffees" not with my 8gb of ram and an i5-3450. 24:45 with my lack of processing speed, blurxterminator takes up to an hour to run, so undo doesn't help me at all. I've taken to is making a preview of a small area I'm looking to correct, then using preview->make image from preview, then using that as my preview. Works fairly well for most processes, and gives a preview window for "unpreviewable" processes.
GHS doesn't seem to work, first had to install it, but when I set the graph to 250 per your video I only get a horizontal line, no curve? I didn't use ArcSinstretch as I am working on the elephant nebula.
The easiest way to get rid of the green is to use the Auto Linear Script which is in the Toolbox: th-cam.com/video/AGyBffz5M8o/w-d-xo.htmlsi=innBBNQD6z5wfbnz
@@viewintospace Thx really a lot! Your hint was more than usefull! But please for my better understanding: what might i have done wrong in the process, so that the pic remained green? Best from Vienna! Michael
Hi, at the end of part 2 the image tab does not have a green line on the tab indicating that its not stretched. at the beginning of part 3 there is a green line. it kind of made it difficult for me to follow later on.
It seems that something with your flat correction is not correct, if I see the image at 33.20. I think You clipped to much on the black point side. You can adjust that much finer with the Histogram function after the GHS stretching. I think it results in a too dark background in the the end. You don't talk about why you choose local intensity of 8 und 3. They are good starting points to experiment with but it depends on each image. Maybe with the next image 5 and 2 are fine and so on.
Thanks for the feedback - quite a lot to unpack here. First of all, yes, most likely a flat issue. But again, it is easy to demo workflows with flawless pics, but more helpful to see how to deal with such deficiencies as beginners usually have to fight with. So there was some intent in using this pic. But what was not intended, was that the pic looked perfect in PixInsight, looked perfect in edit in Final Cut, but when I exported the video the pic looked awful.... Never had this issue. Anyway, let's continue with the clipping: This is quite an interesting thing I can not explain. Usually in GHS Linear as I show it goes perfect - you really just clip this 0.000001% and can then still move again in unclipped territory. But in some cases like here this does not work and only at 0.01% or so it gets responsive. No clue why. Any yes, you are correct, in such situation then to use Histogram Transformation or Curve Transformation might be the better choice. Last but not least yes, the local intensity changes depend on the pic. This is also why I recommend to watch the full process tutorial. GHS is too complex to explain fully with such a complete workflow tutorial.
@@viewintospace watching your GHS tutorial as we speak, and i can tell that you actually know what you are talking about. The trouble with these things is that everyone is making tutorials these days, and the loudest are the people that have very limited experience, but they still find it appropriate to teach others, where they actually are wasting everyone's time.
Sure, Exponential Transformation can work with any object but it very much depends on your stretching and other previous processing steps you did. So my recommendation: Try it, and you will immediately see if it has a positive impact on your pic or not.

Well, it is for sure not the most user-friendly software (and that is a very nice statement...) But it is the most powerful processing software and it pays off to accept the pain and learn it!
I’ve cut and pasted the link for Skypixels into PixInsight, and when I try to perform updating, I get the following error message: “Unable to download Repository information. Network error: Response code 404.” I noticed that the listing for this in the video itself included “_Repository/“ so I typed the entire line in by hand, and when I went to update I got a dialogue box with options to “apply” and “apply to all.” Because I didn’t know what that all meant, I aborted the effort. Have I done something wrong? What should I do differently?
Sorry, the URL was indeed incomplete. I did correct it now: www.skypixels.at/HVB_Repository/ Please click apply all when you entered all relevant URLs.
@@viewintospace Sascha, you're a gem. Thank you. That worked well, and I've already tried out PSFimage on two hours of two-minute photos of M101 with the supernova.

Very happy to hear!!!!
Excellent tutorial! Looking forward to joining your patreon group.

I wished I had found you from the beginning of my PI 'adventure'!!
Love your pace (and subtle wit) - I now need to watch the whole series before I dive in to my recently aquired pixinsight and RC tools! Thank You

I enjoyed this videoand learned a lot about stretching. Thanks
Thanks so much, excellent tutorial(s)!!!
Thank you for your great video series and ease in following. Excellent job.
You're very welcome!

Use 24h local time.
Awesome!
Excellent tool

Please watch a dedicated GHS tutorial like from Adam Block, Dankrangers Inc. or myself.
Thank you, just one question: After part 3, my photo is still remaining green! What did I miss? What was I doing wrong? Thx!

Part 3 is NOT a continuation of Part 2 - Part 3 is more like a more advanced workflow incl. scripts.

Ok, so when i try to use GHS, my image goes to white quickly. I am using my own data from a 533MC Pro (2hrd of Rosette nebula)
As I state in the tutorial GHS is complex - have a look at some full GHS tutorials like the free TH-cam one of Adam Block.

48min and its part 3 out of 3? No wonder I have never been able to figure this software out.
Well, it is for sure not the most user-friendly software (and that is a very nice statement...) But it is the most powerful processing software and it pays off to accept the pain and learn it!
So this video is basically Part #2, but with better tools and processes?
No, some stuff is only explained in part 2 like SPCC - so do all 3 parts and don’t skip
Why not background neutral in this process
Because SPCC includes the Background Neutralisation - so you do not have to do it separately anymore

I tried using GHS and I don't get a curve it's very flat?
so i don't get that black image on this part either, meaning the gHS. i had to quit for now. can't follow anymore.
If your image does not get black, it means it is already stretched.....
Problem is solved
Thanks!
Really happy to see that you liked it!! Thanks a lot!
