Ka Bar Backpack Kaster Field test

  • This is a field review of the Ka Bar Backpack Kaster. I found this while browsing the Ka Bar website the other day. I was looking at some new knives they had for this year. I saw this little gadget and knew I had to have one. I have been eye balling some wood hobo reel designs for a while and am familiar with the classic design as many are Im sure. The nice thing with this is it wont crack and split like wood when exposed to moisture and heat, it is made of a VERY tough material.
    As a kid my friends and I used to make something very similar out of scrounged items at the local fishing waters using soda bottles, tin cans, sticks and used tackle. We would catch some bugs and spent many summer days picking eager little sunfish, bluegill, bass, crappie, perch, and even a few catfish out of the lakes and ponds within bicycle range.... good times !
    Some Specs.
    Mine weighs in at 4.2 oz with the line clip or 3.7oz without and this includes 50yds of 10lb spiderwire braided line ( braided line will not coil over time like monofilament)
    Length is 6 1/4" long and just under 2" at the widest point.
    The inner compartment is about 4 1/2" deep and tapered down from 1" to maybe 1/2" at the bottom. There is a rubber O ring to seal the compartment. There is enough room for a decent emergency fishing kit.

    I went there looking for something new to try and left with a dozen of their rubs and spices, some fish brine, jerky seasoning, 2 bottles of bbq sauce and some hotsauce !
    My favorites are :
    Chili Chipolte Lime : Smokey, spicy, great lime taste, FISH FRIEND!
    Himalayan Ancho Smokey seasoning: smokey and spicy!
    Himalayan Lemon Season all: great lemon flavor, great on chicken!
    Bailey Secret Celtic: excellent season all, potatoes, eggs, veggies.
    They have much more, 200+ spices and seasonings, jerky and meat cures, sausage making equipment and all sorts of food prep equipment. This is not a paid endorsement... I've built lots of hobo reels, still collect and use mini-reels, but after decades have realized what is needed is a closed-faced spinning reel centered in line with a handle... no rod. Your Ka-Bar rig reminded me of that. Hell, if just had a small inline closed-face spinning reel on top... you could wind with more control and have a drag system (set lighter than normal since no bendy rod tip). A rig like that could be designed to be tie-wrapped to a makeshift pole with wrap-on eyelets or cut-off safety pins.

    I've been eye-ing up those Ka-Bar survival fishing reel/handles online lately, and I'm sort of on the fence about adding it to my bugout bag. The price is certainly reasonable, and the fact that its minimalist with no mechanical parts makes it even more appealing, but I've always fished with regular rods and reels. I've never tried to toss just a loose line into the water, then try to manually 'spool' it back in after a fish takes the bait, much less attempt to set the hook after the fish nibbles. I'm already clumsy as hell. I'd probably have all of that extra loose fishing line slack all tangled-up in the nearby brush, all over me, knotted and snarled and crap. I'd get pissed-off real quick. I reckon it takes some getting used to. Thanks for the video review. Appreciated.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can appreciate the frustration, it takes a little practice for sure. If you do get one tie on a bobber and practice casting in your yard. I also suggest using braided line (spiderwire etc) rather than monofilament. Monofilament will take a set and get all knotted and bunched up over time. I am lucky that as a kid we only had what we could find sometimes so we made handlines all the time with sticks, bottles or old cans. To be honest If I am hiking into an area to fish I will take my collapsible rod/reel or two. If I am going to an area that has water and I might want to fish but do not want to carry extra gear.... I throw this in my pack. Id rather have it and be able to fish than set on the bank and wish I brought something ha ha. at the very least it holds line and a little tackle, you can tie line onto a stick and use the tackle to fish that way, essentially making it a mini tackle box.

    wind the line in the other direction. as you have it, the pulling force on the line is in the direction the spool unscrews. if held in left hand, line should be over. in right hand, line should be under.

      Yes, this is one of the issues with Amazon, and a big one. The seller name has changed multiple times, several people have reported the issue to Amazon and to Ka Bar but it is still allowed to happen. This is not the only item this is happening with either. It is one of the main reasons I dumped The Amazon Affiliate program. It is a shame to see so many other creators still promoting them knowing the number of subscribers I had report issues on my small channel.

    I hate that feeling.. having a nice fish break the line and right within reach. I was out fishing on a jet ski today and hooked a giant drum (red drum, puppy drum etc). It was so big it was rotating the jet ski around.. I fought it all the way up to just where the fish and I were making eye contact 👀 🐟 and the line snapped... Grr 😮. It was beyond the max allowable size but I sure wanted to land it and get a picture

  • @1djtraxx

    Saw your review on Amazon. I wonder if they could make one of these that had a hollow cavity inside the spool end that would hold a thin green stick that could act as a pole if you had a couple of clip on eyelets stored in the handle.

    I hand line and don't even use a pole . Get 30 lb spider wire . It's the thickness of 10lb mono and works way better . Figure out how to tie a drop shot rig or a trout magnet jig because hand line casting needs the wieght to be mostly at the end of the line . Salt water fishing on a hand line is extremely fun. Check out the Yoyito hand reel .

    I've used those donut shaped hand line reals they work great, maybe better than yours for heavier tackle, if you have salmon or something bigger near you. But yours fits in a pocket, which is slick, cause in a survival situation, yer always doing 5 things at a time, gathering shelter materials, and you are looking for food, so if you see fish feeding, you can just get after it right then.
    We made stick and string setups when I was little in the 80's, all hooks, lures, and most of our line came from the river or in a tree over the river, hah. If it takes you 60 seconds to get a $5 lure, that's a good wage for a 10 year old, hah. We also used red huckleberries as fake Salmon eggs, out in rural Oregon.

      Hmm, maybe by some freak accident depending on which way you wind the line on , but most times you are playing the fish with the opposite hand you have the reel in right? That's how I normally do it anyway. Most the fish I tangle with are not big enough to worry about but other people may be going after bigger fish and need to consider it.

I have caught them on nothing more than a bare hook in some places, but if they are in a popular area they can get hook shy so downsizing helps. Good luck !!

    That's a stupid design having the spool unscrew from the handle, what happens when you catch a substantial sized fish and the fish ends up with the spool!
    It should be solid moulded and have the handle cap unscrew for storage, just another rushed, unthought about novelty item being rushed out by companies to make extra cash. Great idea, bad design concept.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I hooked a fish that broke 10lb test and did not unscrew the top.... you can simply wind the line in the opposite direction as the top screws off so your big fish tightens the top (theoretically).... problem solved. Having the opening at the top allows a larger opening for putting bigger items in the handle like a bobber instead of being restricted by the smaller opening at the bottom of the handle.

    Oh! The sight of you staring at the lost fish! That hurt man! I have two of these reels! The first one has line that is way too heavy and hooks that are way too large for decent fishing. The new one has eight lbs test line, smaller hooks, small weights, and three bright bobbers. And there's still alot of room for things like swing baits, swivels, preset hook lines, etc. I was never really taught how to fish, but I am learning. Now I just need a stuff sack to put my tiny kit in. The first kit even has an auto reel! I have a can of crappie powerbait marshmallows for starters. I need to get some swivels for faster changing and maybe some swim lure and maybe a spoon lure too. This second reel is for my canteen loadout and it's accompanied by a daisy slingshot for things like rabbit and squirrel. The canteen pot is small so I'll need to do some campfire roasting as well! I should probably add some seasoning like old bay or something as well! This is a really nice reel to get food with! And I love the storage space it has. You can pack a ton of tackle in there!!!
