  • Howdy Peeps, got a cool one for you to check out! Is it Chert? But so dull and non-shiny, it's not rough, but far from slimy! Where is the Waxy? Did it all run? I am of two minds here; can you help me put things together?

      Hi there largent45, it's a weird specimen as far as luster, I do find chert with areas of a white dull color, but it is soft and my knife cuts it easily, this stuff has gray streaks from the blade, so it's hard for sure. Thank you and I hope you are well my friend.

    That cherty puzzle fits together beautifully! Did it snap into place?
    Did you do a scratch test? I think chert can lose its luster when exposed to the elements. If there's a fresh little break in a conchoidal fracture, I imagine it should have a more lustful, cherty lustrous appearance in that fresh circular type of cleavage area.
    I could be wrong. It happens way too often. 🤷

    • @MrChubbyHubby.
      @MrChubbyHubby.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      RMB this here rock has been a puzzle to me and continues to be. When scratched with my knife a gray streak is left behind, the fracture that broke was very tight, but it could have been enough to expose it, but it was tight so...? I could crack it open and see, and I might, but it is kind of cool to have as an example or specimen, at least till I find more, then it's hammer time! The funny thing is, when I got into this whole rock thing I thought, well at least all the facts should be in, they have been around for all this time, LOL.

    Not so sure it is chert. I do not see conchoidal fractures that are found with micro crystalline quartzes. Would be interstate where it was found. Looks similar to tuff. Also looks like maybe a limestone? Did you scratch test with a knife?

    • @MrChubbyHubby.
      @MrChubbyHubby.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there Fayde and thank you for the info. After reading your comment the following steps occurred. I checked my MI rocks & minerals book by the Lynch's and found nothing, next I went to my Audubon north American field guide and found it! and looking at Plate # 707 it does look similar, and reading the description the colors do match, but on this piece when I scratch it with my knife blade it does leave a mark, a gray one from the steel, and that is on all surfaces, even the outer grayish white stuff that I thought would be "host rock" also, while this piece does not have a waxy appearance it is smooth, not gritty. The problem I then had was doing a google search to see if we have tuff in MI and could not confirm that, although I did find mention of volcanic rock, but it mostly seems to be in the U.P., but A. it's a google search, lol and B. we did have those glaciers, so... And lastly to my eye this does show some conchoidal fractures, I think I still need to do more work on my setup with lighting and such, this was found right here in northern MI along a dirt road, some of the rocks are fill they use for repair, but the quarry I am almost sure they come from is less than 10 miles from this site. Sorry for all the reading my friend, let me know if this answers your questions, and if you have any follow-up ones and again thank you for the suggestion.

    • @outdooradventureswithfayde6832
      @outdooradventureswithfayde6832 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, doubtful to be tuff. But resembles it in appearance. My guess was a type of limestone or chert if it does fracture like arrowheads do. Sorry, I did not seen your reply my friend.

    • @MrChubbyHubby.
      @MrChubbyHubby.  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello there BlueMoonBee, I hope you are well my friend. So, short answer, look for a video soon about chert. Longer answer, Chert is a sedimentary rock that has turned into quartz with inclusions, and for most of the cherts that is microscopic algae and other wee critters. Flint, which is actually black Chert is chock full of algae and sparks well. Now to get confusing, LOL. One of my books says chert is grey to black, yellow to brown, the Audubon rocks and minerals guide says color is not a good way to tell, but then says red chert is jasper. And also, that the yellow/peanut butter colored chert gets its color from Limonite, which is a type of iron ore. Well, my understanding of Jasper is that it get's it's color from varying amounts of iron ore, and there is yellow jasper, plus red and green and white, so why make things confusing for an old guy! And unlike the above example a lot of chert I find has a very waxy texture and sheen to it, a dull shine. It is listed as a 7 on the MOHS hardness scale, well if regular quartz is a 7 then chert/flint is a 7+++, I have a friend who recently finished some and he said it took 2 months in stage 1! I tried posting links here BMB but it won't let me, if you go to City Rockhounding he has a recent video titled "Finished Tumbling Some Railroad Chert, Wow" and also, he sent me some and you can see that in "An Awesome UnBoxing Thank You City Rockhounding" on my channel. I hope this helps more than confuses BlueMoonBee, if you need any clarification, please let me know and thank you for being awesome!
