I wouldnt cut any fronds off. Especially if there are any green ones. They supply nutrients to the tree. And the cutting hasnt had time to heal before the freeze making them even more susceptible. Even if they’re dead.. leave them on.. they help protect it. Best to only prune palms in spring and early summer. You look pretty far north. Good luck! I LOVE my palms. Were supposed to get a good cold snap over Christmas here in St Pete Fla. going to cover the ones I can.
I love when people care about trees.
Lost a lot of nice palms last year in Houston freeze - this year I'm gonna try wrapping 'em up in Christmas lights (btw the xmas lights of past he's referring to are called C7's) and then doing this burlap technique to help hold heat in. We'll see
Yep. I'm here in Cypress/Bridgeland. Gotta wrap them TODAY for the freeze.
I just did this to my palms in north TX for this freeze. I use burlap on some and on my large Texas Sabels I use large tarp with bungee cords. They have survived the last two winters. I wrap whenever the temp will fall below 12. I will try the heat tape. Seems easier.
@@davemTX2023 Can get really expensive over time. Unfortunately you can probably buy a new larger tree for the amount you spent in electricy .
Would you consider wrapping C7 Xmas lights then burlap on top?
@@davemTX2023 Does it necessarily to use both C7 Xmas lights and then wrap with burlap on the outside?
Looks like that should give your pindo some protection from the wind an decent insulation while allow some fresh air exchange. Seems like space between the boots will allow a buffer to the core of the trunk to provide further protection. Best of luck & happy 2023!
also, cedar is toxic to most plants, a cedar mulch is not a good option, go for bark mulch from fir or hemlock or just use leaves
The layer of burlap covered with 5 mil black poly will keep the heat in. A roll of poly will cover 6-8 trees for less than another roll of burlap.
Have you tried it? Thinking if it won't be to humid wrapped in poly, if you have wet and Cold winters
If you are going to wrap in burlap should you not first wrap lights around the trunk then the burlap ? Would this cause a fire risk ?

Hello, I have eight newly planted queen palms planted maybe one month ago, they anywhere from 6ft to 15ft..its supposed to get down to 30 degrees tonight just like for 4 hours should I do anything cover wise with the palms or they should be ok? Thanks
Another Alfred here :) ... Even 4 hours is enough to harm a tree
Man that thing needs anything you can give it. Sure lookin' rough.
I've just gone with the bubble wrap and leaf method as insulation. It's Nov 9 2019 and it's been freezing in NJ. Will keep u posted. Thanks for the information 👍
How did that work out Dave?
i just put in a 8 ft windmill and will be looking to winterize it.
@@00devils I unwrapped them last week and we had a VERY mild winter and they were completely rotted. It was heartbreaking 💔
@@IamSquidword , ohh no. We had a very mild winter. im also in NJ. so what do you think went wrong? did you cover the top and try to keep the crown and palms dry?
@@00devils I'm in NJ also. One was a giant red leaf banana plant and I watched everyday to make sure the top was on. I thought it was dry but I guess not. The other was a tropical adonidia palm. I did the best I could but I had low hope it would survive. The red banana I was devastated over. It was 14 ft tall and I cut it down to 4 ft.
@@00devils Thanks for the reply. You don't get many with the love for palms
Hmm, i guess heat tape should work. Maybe i need to try that instead of incandescent lights. Seems like a firerisk though lol
Cant tell what kind of palm it is, would be good to know
I think it's a Pindo from all signs, large trunk and feathery fronds. It quite cold hardy so I am not sure how cold it got and for how long that that happened to it. but if there are fronds sticking up over that burlap those will just die in the cold.
Smart!
I don’t like how he trimmed the fronds before winterizing the palms, they need as much greenery as possible to get through the winter
I think I'd only did one later of burlap over the tape. Don't want it to get too hot.
I've never had palm trees but I think wrapping them with plastic would be a good idea.
what hardiness zone is this?
I have no Palms but I have a butt. Last night it was 17F -8C. I am boarding a Feral Cat in the Kitchen. He's well mannered an well behaved. Sleeps all the time.
Don't worry that will protect that tree
Where is this at?
The English and we Ozzies call burlap 'hessian' pronounced hesh- n.
A Mummy !
I have to say I feel sorry for palms that have to be wrapped up like this every winter. Obviously they’re in climates that are too cold for them. I live in the tropics so palms here never undergo this stress.
Feel sorry? give me a break - good for you - some of us don't have the luxury of living in such nice stress-free tropical places as you do, but this doesn't mean we who live in colder climates don't still love and desire to have beautiful palms on our properties - as the video shows, we go to great lengths to try and maintain them - shows your laziness, what have you ever done for your palm tree beside sat there and looked at it?
@@bolo5340 Made me laugh 🙂
Can you grow palmetto in ohio
