Really revealing. I loved that someone asked Julian about his rhythm playing and he answered so humbly. I feel as though the two have become wise old men in their time together. because when they first met they were mature, but now they've come on even more. Thanks so much Chris and Jules

This was taped the day after their show at the Old Town School in Chicago. It was the first time I'd seen them live, and they were much better than even I expected. They just have so much funplaying together. They are almost apologetic at how much they enjoy their work. The only thing that could make them better would be if Jules could sing. That would add so much to their show, to hear them sing harmonies ona waltzor classic country ballad. I'd love to hear Critter and a guy like Teddy Thompson, Richard and Linda's boy sing together. These guys are just amazing at their craft.
So are they getting all their amplified sound simply from that one mic in the middle? Doesn’t look like they’re plugged into anything. I’m performing for the first time with an acoustic soon and trying to figure out the best way to get a natural acoustic tone in a small venue.
Yeh man... Use a mic. Point it at the guitar in between your hand positions. Kinda where the neck meets the body. WATCH OUT FOR FEEDBACK! ... it's beautiful if you can get a nice, loud and tight sound.

Good call Dan blue-chip picks are great, but I'd own one for about 30 minutes and it would evaporate into that graveyard in the sky, or under my couch. The Dunlaps are nice alternative, I sandal the grip features off, and then polish it down with those micro mesh pads and some Maguires Scratch X, polishing compound. Start with 600 and then maybe 800, 1,200 etc. if you want to go with overkill, 6k,8k, and then 12,000k for the OCD in most of us that are inclined to obsesse over such things.😏
It's a Collings OM1A JL guitar. It has a satin as opposed to a matte finish, which in my opinion looks a lot more attractive in reality than it does in videos. Julian originally asked Collings whether they could come up with an OM model similar to the Waterloo guitar that he so likes. This led to them developing this signature model together.
There is no off notes, the melody is in a different mode (like the flat 9th in the first song, could be from Phrygian mode or Hungarian minor. ) other than the regular Ionian mode, usually heard in funk, jazz, and even classical music. Yeah they sound odd and irregular at first, but if you are into modes, they can create nice tensions and quite fun.
I agree that those modes are accurately observed but I personally wouldn't ascribe them to this music. In other words, I think those Off Notes are just deliberate antecedents AKA melody-tension (as in tension and release, AKA antecedent followed by consequent, AKA Antithesis) This can be heard in the first tune when Jules plays a dissonant note, one semitone up from the root of the scale then releases the tension onto the root So yes it's a flat 9tension the a rootRelease.) Jules is good at doing that. He's being doing jazz since he was a kid.
