What is the diodes purpose to do what for the light bulb? if you didn't add the diode across the light socket what would happen?
A diode allows electrical current to flow in one direction while blocking it in the other direction. In a lamp or switch matrix, the diodes are important as they isolate the lamp or switch when closed even though the switches or lights are all wired together. This helps reduce wiring in pinball machines. If you do not include the diodes (or install them in the wrong orientation), the switches and lamps will exhibit bizarre behavior. Sorry for the delayed response, I just saw this one.
@@HurryUpPinball If all the lamp sockets have a diode soldered across each lamp socket how does this isolate the lamp? or help reduce wiring in the pinball machine? because all the lamp sockets have a diode soldered across the lamp socket so not sure how the lamp matrix would know the difference between the lamps since they are all the same.
Beliw is a great article that details the switch matrix, discusses diodes, and how they isolate a switch in the switch matrix. This is similar to the lamp matrix. It explains how the switches are chained together but can be individually isolated with the diode in place while using a matrix. Not all lights require a diode on the socket (ie general illumination lights). GI lights are chained together and are typically all on or all off so there is no need to isolate them. Inserts need to be individually turned on or off and when wired in a matrix, diodes allows this with a reduced number of wires. This would be a great topic for a tutorial and I will see what I can put together.
