@@planterpot4627 So, I agree that the plant may not have ever been produced because of the pest problem. When do I stop watering them? They have finished flowering, but the green plants still look healthy. Been doing the research, but still not too sure. The plants haven’t turned yellow yet, but will they even turn yellow if I’m keeping the water up to them?
@@Rosesraspberries72 the plant will naturally start to yellow towards the end of its life cycle, I would assume to stop watering once it gets to that point. . ? but idk man, im not an expert either

If you do potatoes again remove all eyes but one to get bigger (but not as many) potatoes(keep all eyes on for LOTS of tiny potatoes). For good potato growing use lots of compost, don't overload with any nitrogen fertilizer(gives lots of leaves), your plant threw A LOT of its energy into leaf production and did nothing for the roots. Use a phosphorus rich fertilizer (for root growth) and potassium (for overall plant health). Even if you don't fertilize with anything top it with compost every couple weeks and it'll do great! Mainly just use lots of compost ^_^ PLZ try potato again, would love to see if this helps!
I've grown my own potatoes and I super agree that lots of compost is a must. You also should add soil as the plant grows taller so there is more plant underground to grow tubers.
We found this out; the foilage must die before you dig them. The first year we planted potatoes, we only had tiny potatoes because we dug them while the foilage was green. The next year we waited until the foilage almost completely died back before digging and we had a very good harvest. Patience is key.
They didn't allow the plant to grow fully and yield its full worth. They stopped it before it could make 'big potatoes'. That doesn't happen until after the plant flowers and then goes dormant.
@@garyrice764 Potatoes harvest in 90-100 days. They are generally grown in areas and seasons of less rainfall. So, these potatoes should have been big after 92 days.
I just plant whatever potatoes at home that have started growing roots. They are all over my garden. Purple, rose, white, yellow, russet. It's like finding easter eggs. You never know for sure where they are and it's fun when you find a bunch.
This is exactly how we do it. Buy a sack of potatoes once, and you'll have potatoes every year after....even when you didn't plant any that year...surprise potatoes!
@@galaxyneon6054 In that setup, with cero sun light, even after 140-150 days the potatoes could be really small, maybe a couple of times bigger than those three tubers he ended up with.
Absolutely love how it stretches out its roots first to check how much soil it's got to grow more potatoes. It's just so therapeutic and funny at the same time to watch 😅😊
i really guess there's not reason not to think that was the process going on... i mean goldfish and many other things adjust to their environment and constraints....
@@cam5816no they’re not. Goldfish are actual animals. And they’re smarter than a lot of people think. They just want to pretend they’re dumb and worthless so they can put them in bowls and let them die instead of actually taking care of them.
This happened to me exactly! My potatoe tree was so damn big and ma man only gave me 2 tiny a$$ baby sized miniature play house potatoes😩I was like what the heck this spoonful a mash potato taste good!🤣🤣 It was the tastiest potato I ever had!😉
3 months should be enough for most potatoes to produce a decent harvest, but some can take longer. I have no idea what type of potato this was i just found it sprouted in my fridge. But as you can see at 0:49 a lot of the plant gets eaten up by fungus gnat larvae. That probably had some impact on the harvest. I have grown potatoes in buckets before and those have produced a proper amount of good size potatoes.
@@draconite7515 that's okay. Your criticism did make me 'steel man' your argument. There is such a thing as 'Light Independent Photosynthesis' paradoxically. Even though that's not what you were talking about, it kept me in check♟
While this is true it's not always advisable (from a dorky gardening standpoint) because many of the varieties we find in the grocery store are not true-to-seed, and are hybrid varieties that require two separate parents to produce the fruit you have in your hand. So by growing those seeds you're playing the genetic lottery and the chances of it being exactly like what you bought from the store are slim to none
Not sure why some people don’t get that the purpose of this cool video isn’t to educate on how to properly grow and harvest potatoes. It’s a time laspe video showing the beauty of nature at work. Gosh 🤓
I'm new to gardening and am fascinated with how plants and soil can transform like magic. This video shows the soil being consumed... some of it maybe to gravity and water compacting the soil downward. I which factor is doing the most transformation.
Fun fact. This scene was all improvised. The director intended for the potato to just sit there but out of on the spot inspiration it started to grow roots and sprout at the top. It was such a great moment he decided to keep it in the film
Thank you for doing this video, I have often thought about making a video like this but thought it would take too much time My family grew potatoes in Maine and PEI. Excellent!
i had planted potatoes for the very first time this year a month or two or so ago, may be more maybe less, but masha allah did i get a good harvest for the very first try. as a child i couldnt hold my excitement and so i dug them out, today in fact, and have some big ones about 10cm more or less. it was in a tiny pot so i reckon that may be why there were many small ones and another reason may be because i either waited too early or too late. i have two pots in which i planted potatoes in. they were i rekon maybe a week apart but i soon started to notice changes even though they were in the same area. the first one which had beautiful leaves had started to thrive and then later die whilst the newer one was just thriving. i then noticed a new sprout after the last remaining 'elders' of the previous generation of leaves and plants died in the first one and now today i dug them out. I was pretty suprised and it exceeded my moms expectations which was good news since she had experience in gardening whilst i didnt. i still havent taken the newer or the second pot and dumped it as its plants were still thriving like before and still are. i have planned to dig them out at the end of this month to give it more time. however i can already see some areas where you can see exposed potaoes and they look quite big, maybe even more than 10cm but idk what i should do with them exposed. wish me a good harvest and to those skilled potato planters please give me advice on what i should do to the exposed potatoes or at least just their heads.

Thanks for this video, I literally know nothing about farming and I've been wanting to learn about how to grow my own crops and potatoes was a big one, it's cool to see how they transform!
Next time, you should try to grow a fast growing invasive plant, like japanese knotweet, which has really big and strong roots. It would be very interesting to see it.
Or Japanese Wisteria, it will spread like hell and strangle everything that it grows on. If he plants that, it will grow all over his studio especially if the whole studio room would be covered with soil to grow on.
A guy planting a plant and then went on vacation. This is what happened to his house. That will be the last video... Maybe we won't even see the video but a person's home completely taken over by plants in the news
In 90 days I got lot of medium sized potatoes even without fertilizers, no pesticide but regular irrigation. The thing is, I cut the sprouted potatoes in which every piece had an eye and placed them each at one feet apart. Most of them became plants and we got a sack full of potatoes with a land size that of a small bedroom say 10 by 12 feet. Had I waited more, I could have gotten 50% more yield. Moreover rats stole 20% of my potatoes.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. Recently, I've been watching a lot of potato harvest idk why it's satisfying for me. Maybe bc it has surprises. I hope you'll make one for garlc and onion. Just curious what's happening under the ground haha
Gotta prepare for the Mark Watney experience! And yes, onions are crazy. My mother recently planted a tiny piece of onion scrap that somehow sprouted and it grows like crazy.
I did the same thing as you, but in potato bags. The first one I opened was EXACTLY the same as your video- 1 potato the size of a marble after like 4 months. I left the other 2bags alone and a month later I got about 6 potatoes the size of a golf ball. So I’m leaving the last bag for another month to see if that one does any better and next yr I’ll try to do it right
Very impressive, a lot of hard work I'm sure went into this. This is the type of stuff that's so interesting to me. Also this can encourage new people to get in to farming. Potatoes are really this simple, easiest crop to grow, also cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and corn are great beginner plants.
I would disagree. I can’t grow cucumbers, they just don’t grow. Tomatoes are also pretty crazy, they have tiny thin leaves and produce flowers and very few tomatoes, tomatoes also go crazily leggy. Discourages me a lot.
@@toysforeva Do you make sure to "till" the dirt or fluff the dirt enough before putting your plants in the ground? The goal is to get all the hard topsoil 1-1.5 foot deep down and then break that soul up till it's fluffy. You can do it with a shovel and hoe if that's all you have. This is crucial for the new plant throughout the beginning stage of growth. Till the topsoil, put plant in the ground, water, fertilize. Don't give up, do research and tips/tricks and you will quickly learn. One of the best ways is to go to the local greenhouse and ask the local people for tips. Tomatoes can be a real PITA to grow.

But it was so warm from sunset rays, and so sweet, like honey, that I will remember this pineapple till I my last day. It was incredible. I dig my veggie scraps directly into the soil, I don't want to have a compost spot, so I just go around the backyard and pick a spot, and bury it there. Last year I had a watermelon that actually produced a fruit of 4 lb approximately. But it was 0 effort from me. Looks like you needed more potassium to produce more potatoes. A real fun experiment would be to grow potatoes in all clear hydrogel with a light barrier on top to prevent greening of the potatoes. The light in the "soil" could be limited to only the flash of light to take the time lapse pictures.
Loved the video! And yes of course it was a worthy sacrifice regarding the potato size, because darknes and fertilizer helps them to actually grow, but it would have made a much sober shooting 😄 the roots moving was awesome!
The growing underground part was really nice. Too bad it wasn't continued. Nice video. One thing that helps even more is to learn all about your subject, or as much as possible in order to know what to expect.
Hey so if i have a bit of a gnat problem (thankfully they have been just eating and shitting out kitchen scraps so far) how can I keep them from eating my harvest? Do I have to kill them?
Each eye on the potato is a separate plant and the potato itself is the nourishment (sugars) it needs to get started. Use a proper potato feed that is balanced to match its growth pattern, NPK, as too much of one offsets the others. Plenty of watering, and not too much heat, as heat will stop tuber production and growth, this is important if you grow in bags and pots, keep the base cool and reflect direct sunlight, plastic pots heat up too quickly, the soil dries out, and when you water the water runs down the sides and out the bottom. Use grass clippings on top of the soil to keep in moisture and add pelleted potato feed during the growing season to ensure good tuber size and abundance. You should expect 1-2kg /potato sown. I usually add tomato liquid feed when watering as with tomatoes this benefits the tuber with high potassium, by this stage you don't need Nitrogen, which is only for leaves, so avoid chicken pellets and high nitrogen fertilizers. Stick you fore finger into the soil all the way down, if dry then give a good watering, especially if the weather is hot.
You change the ratio of the fertilizer, increasing the potassium and decreasing nitrogen, as the fruits develop and less upper leaf growth is required. Fertilizers high in nitrogen will promote lots of green leafy, whereas all fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries and so on require higher doses of potassium, such as in tomato feed, the ratio of NPK changes as the plants grows and develops.
@@hughjones1460 I see what you mean now. For me, the term "NPK" stands for standard fertilizer bags with NPK fertilizer, where I cannot adjust each one individually. You meant it as an abbreviation for each single component.
@@whuzzzup If you buy chicken pellets they contain mostly Nitrogen based compounds which are great and beneficial for green leafy vegetables, salads leaves and all plants just starting out in life putting on leaves. Once they are in the fruiting stage, ie, tomato production, potatoes when flowering, I switch to a store bought tomato liquid fertilizer, as it contains a higher value of potassium and less nitrogen, potassium aids the plant in developing its fruits as the leafy stage is no longer required for growth. This applies to flowers too as they are meant to attract pollinators in order to fruit. It's all part of the plants life cycle, as they like us we develop at different stages, and the nutrients required as we age change, so higher dozes of potassium are more beneficial. NPK values reflect the ratios, but for me its much simpler to know which substance I'm buying is beneficial at that stage of the plants life cycle. So when my tomatoes are now producing green tomato, I know to start using a tomato liquid fertilizer, which incidentally I also use on my potatos when they start flowering.
As a professional farmer that specifically loves to grow potatoes, the potatoes aren't ready to come up until the entire plant has died. Also, the production of potatoes is completely independent of the flowers/seeds. Potatoes themselves aren't in fact seeds, they're tubers, they propagate themselves from root.

Mainly just use lots of compost ^_^

I've grown my own potatoes and I super agree that lots of compost is a must. You also should add soil as the plant grows taller so there is more plant underground to grow tubers.
The same is true for fruit trees. Take the hose and blow off some of the blossoms.

Cow or goat manure will give good yield compared to those chemicals you using.
We found this out; the foilage must die before you dig them. The first year we planted potatoes, we only had tiny potatoes because we dug them while the foilage was green. The next year we waited until the foilage almost completely died back before digging and we had a very good harvest. Patience is key.

I had a roommate in college that would plant just about everything he bought from the produce section at the grocery store.
And it all grew
While this is true it's not always advisable (from a dorky gardening standpoint) because many of the varieties we find in the grocery store are not true-to-seed, and are hybrid varieties that require two separate parents to produce the fruit you have in your hand. So by growing those seeds you're playing the genetic lottery and the chances of it being exactly like what you bought from the store are slim to none
@zxc that doesn't always matter, most commercial growers grow hybrid varieties for their disease resistance and increased yields.
Thank you, humble potato, for your life-giving power!

Fun fact. This scene was all improvised. The director intended for the potato to just sit there but out of on the spot inspiration it started to grow roots and sprout at the top. It was such a great moment he decided to keep it in the film

i had planted potatoes for the very first time this year a month or two or so ago, may be more maybe less, but masha allah did i get a good harvest for the very first try. as a child i couldnt hold my excitement and so i dug them out, today in fact, and have some big ones about 10cm more or less. it was in a tiny pot so i reckon that may be why there were many small ones and another reason may be because i either waited too early or too late. i have two pots in which i planted potatoes in. they were i rekon maybe a week apart but i soon started to notice changes even though they were in the same area. the first one which had beautiful leaves had started to thrive and then later die whilst the newer one was just thriving. i then noticed a new sprout after the last remaining 'elders' of the previous generation of leaves and plants died in the first one and now today i dug them out.

An epic harvest! We eat good tonight!

Very impressive, a lot of hard work I'm sure went into this. This is the type of stuff that's so interesting to me. Also this can encourage new people to get in to farming. Potatoes are really this simple, easiest crop to grow, also cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and corn are great beginner plants.
omg, no. not even, no!

I don't know how I did that, I could never repeat my success 😁
Last year I had a watermelon volunteer plant. I dig my veggie scraps directly into the soil, I don't want to have a compost spot, so I just go around the backyard and pick a spot, and bury it there. Last year I had a watermelon that actually produced a fruit of 4 lb approximately. But it was 0 effort from me. It grew from a compost bury spot so to say, haha

It’s legit amazing what plants can do :)
The creator of DNA is amazing.
And the Creator is Lord🙏
Wow I didn't know I was such a great potato farmer until I saw the end of this vid.
i didn't know u weren't very funny until reading ur comment
Thank you my friend.
very useful video.
Loves from Turkey.
Hey so if i have a bit of a gnat problem (thankfully they have been just eating and shitting out kitchen scraps so far) how can I keep them from eating my harvest? Do I have to kill them?
Diatomaceous Earth isn't doing much. I have found a basil peppermint spray. That is slowing them down. Ya'll I'm dying over here.
so if i plant a medium sized potato, after 3 months i'll get 3 tinnier new potatoes! FUCK YEAH!
Did not understand your second sentence. Use NPK or not?
Fascinating that it grows roots slightly UPWARDS as well !
So satisfy, may I know what recorder you are using?
As someone that grows potato’s, this is pretty cool to watch.
Cool timelapse but a very unsatisfying end
Great video! I like your music choice :).
He never even let it bloom! If he would have done that and waited until the plant started dying he would have had full size potatoes
Great video! What were the settings for taking this time-lapse?
Thanks!
i didn't realize a potato growing would be so eerie
Where do you buy these plant pots (I assume they’re glass) would be so cool to show my 5 year old how the roots grow every day
Put in a big potatoes and got a few tiny one after 92 days. Amazingly productive
The potato obviously knew it was being filmed, so the miracle of copious potato production was thwarted. Quantum physics of potato multiplication.
Always amazes me how fast potatoes grow shoots and emerge from the surface, they just seem to know when they're underground.
i learned a lot from the comments, thank you!!!
Awesome time lapse!
I'm impressed!! 3 grapes from a potato plant!!
Imagine relying on harvesting your crop for food just to find 3 jelly bean potato’s
wow i really went looking for a potato time lapse video and found a potato time lapse video
