@@ET_Videos But how do you freeze the frame and do a voiceover before going on to the next clip? I'd like to stop frames and do a bit of commentary on frozen clips. I'm not understanding how to circumvent being able to freeze a clip (that is still continuously recording) and do voiceover at same time.
I had that same problem but I solved it you just need to go to system preferences > Security and Privacy > Microphone and then just make sure that iMovie is allowed to use your microphone.
Thank you so much Eric! Your tutorials are great and I actually learned how to edit my videos from you. Now I have 40+ on TH-cam and keep learning new things from your channel! Many thanks ~elyse
Great video. Thanks so much! I'm a small TH-camr and still learning. Most of my videos so far, I've been doing off the top of my head without any editing. Only have my last two videos had any editing. Many blessings
Something else to note. Whenever I do voiceovers in iMovie, it defaults to "Voice Enhancement" which in my opinion makes your voice sound high pitch and robotic. I usually always change it to "Flat" and this helps a lot. (You do this by selecting your audio on the timeline, go to the top where the bars are, and change it there). Just a tip noone ever told me.
When i do voiceovers I usually wait a second or two before talking to make sure that count down isn't captured with my voice. If you need to edit the audio itself to get rid of the count down you can use my audio editing tutorial. This shows you the many ways to edit audio. th-cam.com/video/xNgPCtAFz_k/w-d-xo.html
Thanks man, was wondering what Mic do you use? I want to start making gaming videos, can you suggest anything? Also i want to make a default intro that i can use all the time, how would i be able to do that? Thanks again
Bilal Sheikh Audio Technica AT2005USB or ATR2100 (basically the same mic but one is black and one is silver). For the intro just make the video in iMovie and export it to somewhere on your hard drive. After that import it into all your videos. Make sure you export it at the best format so you don't lose any quality.
Thanks for the clear cut information and demonstration. Question, I have an imovie with a music soundtrack. How do I add a voice over track on top of it using my live mic on my mac? Do I mute the sound track and then record? Also I recorded a voice track on another project page... but can't move/import it to the desired project.

I have a 4 minuet long video I have to do a voice over for. I want the line that shows where you are as the video is rolling (edit mode) to stay put and have the bottom screen move past it. Just like the way it works when editing a video on iMovie on the iPhone. Is there a way to set this up? Thanks for all your help, your videos are very informative.
I know this is a super old video but I'll try anyway. When I do voice over then I stop recording and want to start recording, it jumps down instead of staying aligned and then it messes up my songs I have as a background music
I would try making sure all cameras and memory cards are not connected. Then turn off your computer. Power it back up and try to share again. If you have to try different settings to see if that helps.
Do you have any videos on how to freeze a frame for x amount of seconds then restart? I am doing a voice over for demoing movements, but need places where the frame freezes so I can talk about that specific portion. Austin is great, I was born and raised here. Now We have OTL Fitness and online work/videos are a big part of what we do. Thanks, Eric!
+Of The Lion Fitness Wow I think I actually don't have that one covered. Right click on the clip and select Add Freeze Frame. Then you will have controls to shorten or lengthen the frozen part by dragging them right or left.
Eric, now I am facing a problem I have never had. When I try to share a video, it says "this item cannot be shared while it is still referencing media on the camera." I have no idea what to do. Have looked through several videos with no luck. Can you help with this one?
+Kenny Brown The icon to the right of the mic allows you to select the audio source. Once you interface is connected it should recognize it. Then follow the rest of the video and it should work.
Hi Eric. Thanks for the video. I tried going to the Window menu but Record Voiceover is not highlighted. Would you know why that is? If not, are there other options? Thank you so much.
Hey ive learned alot from ur videos i would like to know if u have a video how to edit to fastward a video or parts of video also can you do voice over from an ipad with no mic attached?
CLAUDIA MORENO Here is the tutorial I did on fast/slow motion. I think it covers what you are asking about. th-cam.com/video/oAf_4up40ww/w-d-xo.html As for iMovie for iPad, you can record voice overs with the built in iPad microphone. Just put a clip in the timeline and click on the microphone icon, and record. After you are finished recording you can move that audio clip where ever you want. Hope that helps! Here is my iMovie Tutorials playlist th-cam.com/video/ZGG5kbMKmLo/w-d-xo.html Thanks ET
Hey Eric - thanks for your videos, very intuitive. I have a question about adding narration over video clips/photos while also playing audio song. I know with recording audio using the inbuilt microphone (MacBook) dims the music at times of speech. But I'm using a recording device and then importing the sound file - however not sure the music dims in the same way - any ideas? Thanks, Rob
Robert Oliver Sorry for the late response. I usually do it manually in situations like yours so I have complete control. I`ll have to do a test to see if it actually dims, though I think it does.
Eric Timmer Thanks for that, done, annoyingly still not working along the clip trimmer and some other items. Will hopefully get to use your tutorial tips soon!
Tanya Doherty Another option is to record the audio with another program like Audacity or even quicktime while watching the video or reading from a script. Then save the file and import it into the movie project.
Make sure your system settings are correctly picking that setup. Also in iMovie you there is a settings icon to the right of the record button. Make sure it's picking up the right audio source.
Hi there -- thanks for this info! Would regular Apple headphones/mic work for doing a voice over? Or do you recommend getting the actual mic for this type of video technique?
Best bang for the buck mic is this one amzn.to/2lKwbIQ That's what I have used for years and years and recommend to everyone. Get a cheap foam windscreen with it too. You could use your headphones/mic, but I'd do a test to see if you are happy with the quality. I know I wouldn't be but if you are broke it's a good place to start.
Bella willingham Yes you can. When you record the voice over it will temporarily mute the audio on you video. Once you are finished all audio will play. At that point you can raise or lower the sounds of the video and/or the voice over audio.
Hmmm...If you don't have an external mic, and cant get farther away from your computer. Probably just to record in smaller segments while the fan isn't on. If you get a mic get something like a AT2005USB amzn.to/38KzNwI
