Thanks for showing the start up times. That's been a point of frustration on Wahoo cycling computers for a while. Glad you got to get out for a few rides with the Maker family!!!
Probably Android based as the base is level like all the previous Wahoo bike computers (kernel plus hw/sys level services). Karoo is similar but has more of the built in Android infra. Both suffer from long start up times as a result. Also it does not appear to me that Wahoo has ever complied with the GPL.
Garmin's software is too buggy and the UI too lame for my tastes, so I'll be going back to Wahoo with the introduction of the Ace. I switched to the 1040 for the larger screen, but really dislike the software/UI. Wahoo is much more intuitive.
At this point, why wouldn't I just use my iPhone? I have the Roam and it works pretty well but I thought it certainly could use a touchscreen. It nearly costs as much as an iPhone. And I can't use my Apple Watch with any of the wahoo products. I have to use a middle wear device that I keep in my saddle bag to communicate between my watch and my wahoo bike computer.
At the beginning of the video @00:09, in the Left edge view near the top you can see a slot between upper and lower case halves. Do you think this allows you to remove the back for battery replacement, or something else?
A technical question. Inside the wind sensor slot, insects and dust can enter, but especially with humidity and rain. Isn't the device damaged by dust and especially moisture that enters?
Is the mount on the unit itself replaceable or at least made of metal? I think I can see some screws suggesting that it is on the mount but people used to have wear and damage issues with the one on the unit when it comes to Roam and Bolt.
Going to wait until spring rolls around and see what software updates have dropped. It looks like it has a lot of potential, but the software needs more time.
what your thoughts might be about the wind sensor on the ACE and how it compares to the Velocomp Powerpod series? Could Wahoo acquire/license/whatever the Velocomp tech to get an on-board implied power sensor? Then maybe compare that vs. pedal/crank power, to get at some form of aero metric? probably too complex, but as a data-geek, I was just wondering...
Thanks for the review! I feel like more and more device manufacturers are shipping us cookie 🍪 dough with a promise to bake it later. On top of that you also illustrate how this is an odd size depending on the ride type. Finally, if they want to go with transflective, the battery life needs to be very good especially when competing with similar sized LED displays.
I'm really confused by the timing of this release. Why put it out on the third of December? That's too late for a lot of christmas shopping but too early for next (northern hemisphere) cycling season. They could have had a couple months more to polish the interface instead of launching in this half baked state...
Does any wahoo work with garmin Varia? I’m assuming no. I just like wahoos buttons more and was hoping this would be a buttoned version of the 1050 and more focused on navigation (like a hybrid explore 2 nav focus and 1050 modern tech)
I like Wahoo's interface with the Varia much better.. I have the Garmin 1040; if there's no traffic behind me the Varia display disappears from the 1040. So I'm always left wondering -- is there no traffic or did I lose the Varia connection, AGAIN??
I would personally get the 1050, the wind sensor seems pretty gimmicky atm and for the foreseeable future and Garmin seems to do pretty much everything better.
my question was rather sarcastic. After having seen the review from DC Rainmaker, I for sure will keep sticking to my Roam V2 for a while still until I might switch to the 1050 or similar. But that ACE brick is not coming on my handlebar. If I just wanted screen size, I could mount my Iphone ... I was really looking forward to a potentially nice successor of the Roam V2, but now I am disappointed.
I have got the Edge 840 and that is really as big as a want any head unit to be so I haven't even considered the Edge 1040 or 1050, and I certainly won't be considering this brick of a thing either. I do see the gadget value of sporting a wind sensor but there are just too many variables affecting the accuracy as I see it, only really leaving the aha-value of the data, which to me isn't worth the extra money or the extra size and weight.
@@DesFitthis is what I am trying to say as a software developer, AI speeds things up but also push a lot of unbaked features and functionality into production as companies are blindly trusting AI right now. My two cents!
Why can’t bike computer companies make a product which is all screen like a phone 🤦🏻♂️ it can’t be hard as phone companies have been doing it for over 20 years 🤷🏻♂️
How a company like Wahoo realease a brick like this ? Only because is wahoo not mean is go sell like pancakes. Wind sensor ? on my perspective nake more sense realease a gps device with a ability to take coffee, the people love coffe ( before, during and after rides ) certainly with this feature will be sell a lot😊
When cycle manufacturers are charging £1000s to reduce weight in modern cycles,Wahoo come out with the heaviest cycle computer produced, where is the sense in that?
Why don't these companies just develop an app and transfer all their functions into a regular phone, if these cycling computer are reaching such a big size?

FIRST!!!!!
Great report as always Des look forward to seeing the in-depth review when all the software and features has been updated
Thanks Jeff!
Love yours and DC rainmakers reviews
Thanks!
I like your balanced tone on this unit's issues :)
Thanks!
THIRD from 40,000 feet!
Well, happy with my edge 130 plus
Same 😅
Glad I went for 1050 and didn’t wait for another 6 months for this

@ things are different on 1050.
@@jarhead4657 Good chance they'll fix it before Garmin can fix their $700 1040 Edge mess. HaHa

Battery life will be a lot worse. Mount won't be as stable. No buttons

Could you speak about pairing the Ace with Di2 buttons?
I hope they will give us a helm adapter for a complete weather station, a printer and a projector when I want to watch movies while riding.

You're basically paying 600 to be a beta tester.

does it show received messages from IM apps like WhatsApp or Skype? As far as I know the older ones only show texts, calls and emails.

Can you load a gpx file on it so you can follow a path you make .
But what about the update on the ultra 2 black durability….

Varia works with all the Wahoo units and others, Varia isn't tied to the Garmin ecosystem.
Thank you. I assumed it was garmin closed ecosystem since I don’t see any other makers

Est ce que il a un support pour cintre plat vendu avec ou on doit en acheter un autre et ou on peut l’acheter ?
Is this worse than coros dura beta release?
Does it work with Garmin Varia radars?
Yes
so why should I buy the ACE and not the 1050, the price difference left aside?
screen size

UI. Garmin's UI is brain dead. I'm going back to Wahoo with the new Ace.

It's HUGE!!!! Might as well put my phone on my handlebars. Too big for me.
Some of the new features are quite good, but they should have updated the Roam and Bolt with them instead. The ACE just looks too big.
Fourth! I could not even get on the podium 😢
Karoo 3 hands down
Like my Bolt because its small. The ACE is just too big. You even need a enhanced mount for it..
There is some bike computer on those bezels
I feel like i just bought my Edge 1040
The size of it, well if it’s raining you can use it as a canopy 😂😂😂😂
Are products getting worse due to excessive use of AI during development ? Or it’s a wrong assumption ?

Water resistance, Battery life, robustness, ant+… loads of reasons a dedicated gps unit makes more sense
@KeatB I use ANT+ on my Samsung phone with my Garmin HRM strap when walking. Works fine.
I agree re battery life and waterproofing!
big mistake with the size why spend $$$, might as well bring your iphone or ipad 😁
