I really love the new equipment. But............the older equipment is so cool and you can't beat the sound of those old workhorses!! Awesome video Jason!👍😁😊
Last pert near new tractor was an ST325 that came to our farm with 60 hours in the spring of 1983. dad had bought a 55' wilrich field cultivator. it was a little big for the 1977 ST 270 with a 3306 SN 34. the hired man smoked the clutch on the 5th of may with half the crop to put in. we rented the ST325 to get done. dad went in to settle up on the bill in June and it was going to be cheaper to trade the 270 in for the 325 than to fix the 270 and pay the rent bill on the 325. So we kept the ST325 it was main service on the air seeder from 1983 to 2002 when we got our first 8850 Deere. Still have both the St325 and the 8850 but I farm now with two track Challenger tractors as they are more fuel efficient than case quad tracks.
This was a very informative & interesting video. I tip my hat to you BTP!! for me Steiger is right up there with Versatile tractors. Thank you for this vid. Keep them coming! Take care & stay safe. Cheers
Was in the ol PT270 today getting the seed beds ready with the cultivator. Wiring keeps shaking loose all over, so it’s had a few improvised wiring jobs, but it still gets the job done.
I could watch these all day. We had a Panther ST-325 with the Cat engine. Pulled a 60' JD field cultivator and sometimes planted flax with the Valmar granular spreader. Pretty easy to cover ground with that outfit.
Jason, thanks so much for this. Those Series III Steigers are the best looking tractors of all time. We had two on our (now defunct) dairy farm when I was growing up...a Panther with the automatic and a Bearcat with 3pt and PTO. They were awesome. The Bearcat sold at auction this summer. I tried like hell to buy it... but had to give up. It went for exactly the amount that I had stashed away. Buyers premium plus needed repairs (it was in disrepair) put it out of reach. I'm heartbroken about it.
@@bigtractorpower The PTO implements the Bearcat ran were the manure spreader and it applied herbicide while it pulled the Landoll Tilloll 875 finishing tool. It could also occasionally be seen running the tub grinder. I can't remember if there was anything else it ran with the PTO. It was serial number one for 1980. The Panther also had a 6 - way blade on it for pushing silage and haylege. They were really wonderful tractors...I miss it all so much. Jason I'm going to email you about a toy Steiger... be looking for that.
Grandpa had a Cougar, and a Cougar II back in the mid 80s, and I got to drive the Cougar II subsoiling and field cultivating when I was about 12 or 13 years old. Priceless memories. It was a beast for it's time and I loved running it!
We own 2. A PT225 Bearcat and a ST325 Panther. Both are retired now! The 225 was our seeding tractor for years and was eventually replaced with the ST325. The 225 pulled 40' of box drills and harrow packers. It also pulled a 40' cultivator with spikes for banding NH3. The ST325 eventually pulled a 40' air drill with a 300bu cart and a 1250gal NH3 wagon. Awesome tractors! Would like to buy a series III Tiger for a restoration project.
Grew up on a 1979 Ford Fw-30, had the pump turned up to 300hp (like an fw-40). Had crappy 20.8-34 tires on it, later upgraded to 20.8-38s. It was a very quiet and comfortable tractor, although the PT’s were substantially more difficult to service than the st Steigers.
This was a good video, only the Big Bud one was the best. Steiger holds a special place in my heart!!! They deserve more video time. No finer individual than Doug Steiger!!! Maybe you should interview him before he goes upward of course. JohnT.
I used to custom harvest for a friend at Thief River Falls in the 1980’s and he was friends with the Steiger. I remember going to visit their farm one day. They were manufacturing their scrapers there then. One of his farm hands worked for Steigers during the winter welding their wood stoves they made.
I have a st251 cougar, I pull a 36.5 foot field cultivator in the spring and a 530 dmi ripper in the fall, I like I can repair it myself though it hasn't really needed much over the years.
Great and interesting video, as usual Jason. I could be wrong, but I believe that some of the Steiger that were painted blue and white as Fords, were also sold in Europe in orange and white as Fiats.
There is a stieger being used around Smith's grove ky on a construction site. Headed north on 65 you can see it from the rd sitting off in the field hooked to a pan. I look for it to be running every time my wife and I drive through
Hi Jason, with regard to 'ST' and 'PT' designated Steiger tractors, I was of the impression that the former meant a wide frame tractor whereas the latter meant a narrow frame machine - is this not the case ? By the way, your videos are awesome ! Footage has always been great but now even better with drone input too. Your depth of research is what sets you apart, your stuff is always highly informative. Keep up the great work
Correct, the PTAs had a narrow frame, apparently to fit down 30” rows without having adjustable axles (this coming from Steiger employees at the time,) and they could obviously have the hydraulic drive PTO
Jason I was always fascinated with the Steiger tractors. I’ve seen pictures of a prototype Steiger with two front ends together as articulated tractor. Crazy looking. Jason great video 👍 Do you know if I can’t remember witch brother Doug or Maurice Steiger still living? Thank you
Thank you for watching. The Panther Twin ST-650 was the prototype double Steiger. That would have been cool to see working in the field. Doug Steiger is still living. I think he is 96.
@@bigtractorpower Jason that would be really cool to See. Wow!! Good for him.96 years old and to build a great tractor. For him to see them still building them today with that famous Steiger Name

Yes but I need to film them first. It’s harder to find Series I and 2 tractors. This video is a compilation of 5 years of filming. I hope that I can share 1, 2, 4 and 1000 series someday.
Never heard of BIMA. The trend then was to go very big, Volvo and Mercedes did that too. Ford had a 12000. You don't hear from Poclain anymore. They delivered many cranes in my country.
The Old Iron is better then the New Iron. More classic, more variety. More Reliable before all the fancy electronic sensors and stuff that costs more to operate then its even worth.
@@bigtractorpower For sure. It's amazing after all these years, Even after a Factory like the IH Tractor Factory in Rock island the tractors built are still around today doing the work they were built to do. All these years later.

Steiger sold out to Tenneco in 1986. Tenneco was the parent company of Case IH. The reason Steiger could not operate independently anymore was because of a severe down turn in the agriculture economy in the early 1980’s. Grain prices were low, interest rates were high and severe droughts in several regions made things even worse. Many farms were forced to liquidate. Unfortunately this situation for not only Steiger but for International Harvester, Allis Chalmers, Versatile and White Farm Equipmemt lead to the sale of their company to larger companies.
