  • Columbia DX761 (CAX7881). Recorded 12th November 1936. Band of the Grenadier Guards, conducted by Major George Miller.
This record has pride of place in my collection, I must admit a peculiar penchant for funeral marches. The majesty of the playing here is very moving, especially with the full percussion.
I recommend playing this recording as loud as you can stand it in order to witness the full effect...

This is a truly tremendous recording, packed with emotion and mourning - much more so than more recent recordings which I have heard. The percussion is absolutely fantastic, and provides a magnificent introduction for the rest of the band.
In fairness to more recent renditions, the tempo is slower than when the march is played on parade, rather than the the normal slow march pace (though I have not timed it); but it is surely and enduring tribute by the Grenadiers to King George V💂‍♂💂‍♂💂‍♂

I completely agree. The other side of the 78 gets the same treatment - Chopin funeral march - I'll upload it later today.

    My favorite funeral march.
