Anyone ever tried to grow a papaya from seed? 👍🌴
I am trying to grow 15 kinds of bananas and paypa way up north in Canada so I would like to know if u ever do get anything a d how I get it to do so. I have the same grow lights lol

Yes, papaya plants come up all the time in my compost and worm castings. I also bought seeds once from a suppliers here in Australia. They worked fine too.
Germinating on the radiator now, when soaked in warm water 2 sprouted allready.
Before you plant the seeds you must put them in a bowl of water and let them float for a little bit. Seeds that float to the surface should be discarded and only seeds that sink to the bottom should be planted. Greetings from Greece.

I really like this show!! I live in Florida and have successfully started papaya from seed straight from the store bought fruit,remove the seed from the fruit and place directly into the soil,takes about a month to show up,I have them everywhere!!

Nice video. Only, for germinating the seeds I would prefer to use the paper towel method and carefully transplant them to soil when roots and first leaves are visible. I did like 20 seeds at the same time from a store bought papaya and almost all germinated in about 1 or 2 weeks time at 21-23 degrees C. Don't worry about the fruit, from what i can see in your video, you're on the right track. I also live in a cold climate country but that didn't stop me from growing my own mango's in my living room with success. My latest edition to my home indoor garden is a Asimina Triloba (Paw Paw sunflower) tree from seed but 96cm tall today. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
i try grow mangos but plants only get about max.24 inches and slowly die...i try grow indoors as i live in north usa.

If anyone wants to grow papayas in a colder climate, look for "mountain papaya" (Carica Pubescens) as this is much more forgiving of colder temps (but still does not like freezing temps if you can help it). It grows a star shaped fruit that is usually smaller than a standard papaya but can be cross pollinated with a standard papaya to create a "Babaco Papaya" which is larger than both types and is also seedless.
Edit: obviously, the babaco papaya would be grown from the cross pollinated seeds. The size of the fruit is not determined by the genetics of pollen, it is the genetics of the mother plant that gives the fruits qualities. The genetics are only mixed within the seeds themselves.

Are babaco and mountain papaya as tasty as 'normal' papayas? Wikipedia says it's sour, but is it very sour or in a moderate way?
@@yes12337 It shouldn't be overly sour. When fully ripe, they taste like a slightly more bland papaya. Apparently they taste good when mixed with passion fruit and a hint of lime.
@@Handles_AreStupidI grow them in my orchard and you are right, they aren't as good as a tropical papaya but after a while you grow to enjoy the flavour and the smell is simply amazing 😍 we have a few different hybrids in NZ and they are even better than the mountain pawpaw😊

This is interesting! We have successfully grown pineapples in our grow tent indoors. We have tents on display in our store so we decided to grow pineapples both hydroponically and in soil, and we have harvested a couple of times now 😂 so I’m guessing it’s definitely possible to harvest papayas indoors, of course in the right conditions! Great content! 🙌🏻

Thanks Christopher, I really enjoyed your video, especially given that you are growing these plants permanently in an indoor environment. I live in the UK and have become fascinated with growing exotic fruit, although where I live is totally unsuitable for such plants. I find light to be the most important need, given the poor lighting in my area, I notice that these plants suffer as a result. I top up the lighting with LED during particularly bad times. Watering of all tropicals esp. citrus is a lot more difficult than it seems, I have made lots of mistakes there - even using a moisture meter. I am not sure if you have come across the Cambodia based channel 'Agri Buzz', they are excellent and show the ways that all the tropicals can be grown from seed and manipulated into Bonzai styles - fascinating to watch and good to see how easy these plants are to work with when they are growing in the ideal conditions.
Thanks for the great content! Yes, I do follow that channel. It seems like anything is possible given great lighting conditions. I also find citrus a bit hard indoors. Will try to grow a lemon in water soon.
Hi Christopher. I watched your video almost 1 year ago and I have grown my own papaya plants since then. They are now flowering and I hope they fruit for me. I chose hermaphrodite seeds so I wouldn't have to worry about cross-pollination. By the way, your video should come with a warning: germinating papayas indoors in a northern climate is practically impossible during the dry winters. They require a lot of heat and sustained humidity above 60% to germinate which happens very easily in the spring outdoors.

How did you choose hermaphrodite seeds? And what kind of a light setup do you have?

If you wait until the warmer weather of spring, you can (if you don't mind paying for shipping costs) buy and ship into Norway grafted and self-fertile dwarf papaya and other grafted or cutting-propagated tropical fruit plants that stand a much better chance of fruiting compared to starting from scratch (seeds). I recommend Canarius (Canary Islands, Spain) and Flora Toskana (Germany).

I’m in Yakima too. Mine is two years old almost 4’. Has fruiting bodies, with tiny little white flowers at tip. It’s been outside all winter. Going inside in October, placing near a west window but now close to the window.
Interesting. Mine have fruit with tiny white flower at tip of fruit. Maybe it’s hermaphrodite. Two year old tree. From a rooted cutting. It’s been outside all summer and will go indoors in October before killing frost to live in a bright window for the winter.
@@angelagalbreath7653 Hi Angela; After two years also, I have little buds on most of my Papaya plants. Only one of the buds have flowered and has a tinny one-inch fruit!!! Must be a transgender plant also. My Taro plants were doing really well until we had high winds two or three months ago, stripped all the Taro leaves off and they have not recovered. Had a dozen big 24" leaves I was looking forward to making Lau Laus with them... Aloha
i have one that grew out of my compost pile and I plan on moving it indoors in winter
Hey Christopher, great video as always. Have you ever thought of growing Frankincense? I think the other name for it is Boswellia. It probably will be a challenge for you to grow in you climate. I would love to learn how to grow it. I bet ya can do it, plus you'll have the sap to burn and enjoy as well as the beautiful plant to look at. Thanks again for sharing, hope to see more! Like your video. Papayas are easily sold too. There is a market for small papaya trees.

I have a papaya tree that I've nursed from seed for over 5 years. Yes, over 5 years. Not researching 1st is my mistake. However, this is the first year that my tree finally bear fruit. I'm hoping they'll be edible.
I also researched this year, and come to conclude that prior years when all I saw were leaves growing, no blooms, those must have been the 'male' years. Now, my tree is in the 'female' stage. I finally found out that papaya trees change sex...they might have fruit (female) one year & become male the next.

Papaya grows like weeds in India,they really love hot climate,since i stay in Shillong in cold and humid region,i find it difficult to let them grow,your video is my inspiration to grow papaya.thanks so much bro.
I wonder if using some effective garden solar lights would be useful to provide extra light in evening? Would it be helpful or rather harmful for the plant?
What is the coco coir and compost mixture ? Also how often you fertilize papaya? From what height?

way back in philippines we have heaps papaya.. i don’t know anything about it but if it’s a male it won’t bare fruit just flowers, and if it’s a female they do fruit unlimited...and i dont know they need to be pollinated:), but i remember mom just plant and only one plant it bear fruits since it was a female., if it’s a male my mum will cut it after a year since it won’t give fruits anyway lol 😂

I plucked up a tiny papaya tree in Florida growing wild with others under a 30 ft tall one. I wrapped it in a moist paper towel and into a plastic bag and planted it in a pot when I got home to Massachusetts. That was last December. I put it out on my deck in late spring and now it is 4 feet tall and just beautiful! Bringing it in now as cold weather is here for fall and winter. Have to study up on keeping it short as I only have 10 foot ceilings. Good luck with yours in the UK
Man, official Science has known damn so numerous(!) cases when a male Papaya plant, whose top was forcibly pinched out, soon became a female or even a hermaphrodite!!! Try to make a pinching of the apical buds of your adult male plant. In addition, after removing the apical bud, your Papaya plant will begin to branch and in the future will give you even more fruit. My seeds seemed to have germinated just fine. I put them straight into a ziploc bag with a napkin and some water, for about a week. They didn’t germinate however until I put them in soil.
I have two papaya plants that I was lucky to get the whole tap root out of the ground ...I gave up on them when they were in a pot and threw them in the yard and they started growing after that fall was coming so I scooped up a bunch but only 2 survived the transfer to pots, lol my friends think I'm nuts for doing it.....

Oh my goodness Chris, I didn't realise they were also sensitive about their water rations. I've killed so many seedlings with overcrowding and damping off, but hoping this year to do more of what they like and less of things they dislike. Just this winter I killed a full size, 15 year old one simply by omitting to bring her in before the frost started in December 2020. She usually came indoors for the winter, but now she is mush, and needs to be composted.
I enjoyed your video. I live in Florida but I hate ti plant in the yard. So I'm doing it in containers. I have an idea maybe if you put your papaya on wheels so when during the summer you can put them outdoors to get direct sunlight.

Nice job. I grow these also under lights. Musa velutina bananas are the only ones i can get to flower and fruit indoors. Mangos are also fun under growlights.

YES, GIVE IT TRY , as he says. I think that I have one growing up the back under the passion fruit vine. I will compare the leaf and see if that is it. Maybe I could pot it up or just leave it where it is; it gets morning to midday sun but no afternoon sun because of the forest to the west. There might be another growing in the compost heap too; I shall compare the leaves with those in this vid.

im super proud of you man, do you take them out in summer and bring them in when it gets cold? ive always said people can grow anything anywhere aslong as they take the plants in in winter, you are way better than me at this, i am expermenting with soil mixtures with papaya right now and also tryingto see if i need more than compost as fertiliser, i have lots of mango seedlings aswel atm

I didn’t wash my seeds off they still had bits friut on them as the fruit was really ripe when I harvested seeds.anyway they growing good.

Hi, i bought a papaya a weeks ago and planted its seeds in a pot, plants have already started growing, when I bought the papaya i didn't check if it was a dwarf variety or not, is there any way to tell by looking at the plant which variety it is? These ones are going good so i don't want to have to start again with new seeds i know are a dwarf and keep growing my old plants.

Yes you can grow papaya fruit indoor, but they need more water to give you fruit. The Banana trees needs water to.

Hello from Canada. I've managed to sprout a few papaya from store bought fruit. However for some reasons unknown they died.
Anyways I'm privileged enough to live in an area of Canada that gets between 20-40defrees spring to fall ( April to October) my question is do you dormant these plants ? I also insane fruit baring fig trees that i dormant in the winter I'm pots then bring outside once it's warm enough

Hey, thanks a lot for the video!! I am from Colombia and came recently to Germany. At my parents house they grow a lot of things, including mango, papaya, avocado, orange, mandarine and lime. I hope to grow slowly some of those plants indoors in Germany :)

One question can u braid 3 stem together and make like braided money tree ? it would look really nice wot u thing would they survive? I hve seen avocado tree for indoor too and im actully planing to get it plant then braids the stems and make one big plant.

@@ChristopherBrandsdal The snakes love their plants a bit too much sometimes! The're like oblong bulldozers. XD But I hope one or two seeds wil make it. If not, I've got some in pots too. Oh, and the passion fruit project sounds like a lot of fun! I've got passion flower growing outside in my garden here and it seems to have survived the winter but I'm not sure if it's the kind that bears fruit, so I've started new ones from seed. Hopefully we get a good summer! It's a great plant either way and grows super fast!
