  • Taking a walk down memory lane. I called Atlantic, Iowa my home from 1987 - 1996 where most of my fondest childhood memories are. I was one when my parents moved there and we left in 1996 when I was almost 10, moving to Spirit Lake, Iowa where I would later attend and graduate high school at.
It's been over 10 years since I've visited Atlantic, a quaint midwest town located just off I-80 half way between Omaha, NE and Des Moines, IA. So I decided to share stories from my past and take you on a tour of my childhood home town!
Atlantic is also known as the Coca-Cola Capital of Iowa, there's a large coca-cola bottling company in town and they also celebrate Coca-Cola Days with a soda themed parade.

Eric, I currently live in your childhood home. My parents happened to stumble upon your video and sent it to me. Very cool to finally match the height measurements that were taken in the basement. Looks like the last one taken was 03-01-1996!

That is fantastic! So many great memories of that house. Wow, I can't believe our heights are still there - I shared that with my dad because he was the one that marked our heights. He even transferred a copy of our markings on a yard stick to the basement in our Spirit Lake, IA home.
My family moved out of that house on April Fool's Day 1996 so that 3-1-96 would have been the last height taken. My Dad bought that storage shed that's atop the hill in the backyard, at the time it was red. I learned how to ride my first bike on that hill. I got my first Super Nintendo for Christmas in that house, had it set up in the basement. My dad also built the wood deck in the backyard (not sure if it's still there).
In fact my younger brother Connor's first word ever spoken was "Shut the door" because I would always leave the half door open at the top of that steep staircase that leads from the living room to the basement.
As a kid that was a great home and a fun neighborhood, I hope you enjoy your time there and cherish memories too.

Atlantic was my home from birth in the old Atlantic Memorial Hospital (now Royal Oaks Apartments at 5th and Oak) in 1950 until early 1960. Although the homes I remember living in are still there, my first school (Lincoln) is gone and my second and last school (Jackson) is apparently now a residence of some kind (odd). The church my family attended, St. Paul's Lutheran, still stands at the NE corner of 8th and Walnut but has long been the First Baptist Church. Walnut Grove was a big presence in Atlantic in those days; it is long gone. At least the downtown Christmas parade survives...I think.

I think this great. I googled your house on Google and saw it 1056 sq ft. I grew up in South Dakota and had approximately the same footage. Back then that house was adequate for 5. It was touching to see your reactions to childhood memories. I grew up in the 60/70 era. I reminisce a lot. God Bless you and family and pray all are well.

Thanks for sharing, always fun traveling back to places we've lived and experienced - brings back a lot of memories and wild how they feel like different lifetimes or worlds, chapters in our lives. I was blessed to have a good childhood, may God Bless you too.

Thank you so much for this video. I lived in Atlantic from I think 2007-2013 from ages 3-9, I am 19 now. It sounds like a short time but it was so much of my childhood. I went to school here and lived about a 3 minute walk away from the old movie theater. I couldn't have loved this town more than I did. Almost all of these places I remember playing around at like the white stage, I used to climb it as well with my friends. I lived in a few houses from there. I lived on a house on cedar and another house on chestnut. I have dreams about coming back to this place. I remember the bowling alley behind the Walmart, the pumpkin patch that would come into town every October, and the Christmas parades that happened every year. This video is the most informative on Atlantic so I am glad I got to have got to go on a trip down memory lane with you. I appreciate you for recording and uploading this.

I'm glad it brought back memories. Wow I forgot all about the bowling alley, Wal-Mart was not there in the '90s but the bowling alley was. I remember that was where I first learned to bowl - thanks for sharing!

Thanks,Eric, for the fine video. I've been to Atlantic and liked the small town. I had cousins in Red Oak and friends in Shenandoah,a couple of neighboring towns which you heard of. This is actually my favorite part of Iowa. You're not far from the Loess Hills which are cool.I do sincerely wish that these towns would steadily grow every decade. I don't like them gradually dying. And,yes, even their winters are a little milder in the SW side of Iowa. I remember Book It well. My 2 sons read a lot more books due to it. We had many pizzas then. Thanks for sharing all your childhood memories with us. I've done the same thing about the town that I grew up in.

Beautiful part of the country, the rolling hills of Southwest Iowa - the Shire of the USA. I enjoy visiting the backroads and small towns of America. Always fun reminiscing on days gone by.

Hey, thanks for your video. a correction * the video rental store you referenced that you said was Hollywood video was actually called "video Express" and it was actually the next building down from the one you shown. I could be wrong but that other building you shown may have still been a vet clinic back then. I don't remember for sure. I'm a little bit older than you but I was here around that time too. I went to Lincoln though 😂

You’re right, I do remember that now Video Express. Blast from the past. There was a pizza place next door for a while called Breadeaux Pizza. Nice, I remember taking karate lessons as a kid but I think at Jackson Elementary. It was right around the time I moved away circa ‘96 when they built the “new” high school and closed Jackson and Lincoln elementary schools/combined with Washington Elementary.
