Making a toast means raising a glass, most often with some alcohol in it, and drinking from the glass in honor of somebody, for example in honor of the host of the party (like the bride and the groom at the wedding). (The "toast" DOES NOT mean a toasted slice of bread in this expression. It means the activity I have described above.)
