The town is located at the confluence of the Rur (Dutch: Roer) and the Meuse on the right bank of the Meuse. The city centre is located directly on the Rur. The municipal area essentially consists of the approximately five-kilometre-wide strip between the Meuse and the border with Germany. As a result of gravel removal, numerous interconnected lakes have been created in the municipal area, the Maasplassen (Meuse lakes or Meuse ponds). The approximately 3000 hectare area is the largest inland water sports area in the Netherlands. Geology[edit | edit source] Roermond is located in the earthquake zone of the Bay of Cologne. On 13 April 1992, four kilometres southwest of the city, was the epicentre of the Roermond earthquake, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale. It was the strongest earthquake in Central Europe since 1756. Districts[edit | edit source] Roermond is divided into a total of 36 districts. At the beginning of 2007, the neighbouring municipality of Swalmen to the north with 8790 inhabitants was incorporated. The area of the municipality increased considerably from 46.87 to 71.19 km² as a result of the incorporation.
