How good was George Weah actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on George Weah who played for AC Milan for most of his career, not only one of the greatest forwards of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how George Weah ranks and just how good he actually was.

George Weah is the greatest African player ever imo. Sure other players have greater and more substantial trophy hauls but , as you stated, Weah was the patriarch of the modern day (One man army) striker..He gave birth to the R9's, Torres's, Drogba's etc.. of this world..Solo strikers that could occupy an entire back 4. And the fact that a player from Liberia won the Balon D'or is still mind blowing..What a gem of a striker he was.

I was very fortunate to have met him in his twilight. We played a friendly. I was a goalkeeper. The Liberian team won; Georgia Wesh scored two goals. The pictures we took together are some of my prizes posession. Good luck to George Weah and Liberia!!

Weah was also a huge influence on Thierry Henry at Arsenal. There is an interview Henry did with Rio Ferdinand where Henry explains the huge influence Weah had on him. He singles out Ronaldo Fenomeno and Weah as players who changed the role of the striker.

I loved this video. Thank you. Its a small thing but I also like the way you pronounce Liberia. Weah retains iconic status in Liberia (that's one reason he is President) and in Africa too. To have started were he did- on the streets of a country not well known for its football in late 80s/early 90s, and risen to play for Monaco, PSG and Milan speaks volumes about how exceptional he was compared to his peers as well as his mentality. Remember the name- George Oppong Weah!!!

I am from Liberia and proud fan of George Weah. I love your presentation bro, great video and well done. In my opinion if you are judging Weah by his Stats, such as, goals and trophies he wouldn't even be in the top fifty players of all time. For example, Yaya Toure will be consider great a player than George in Africa, because Yaya has won four time African player of the year, champion league, African cup of nation and play in the world three time. But during George Weah era, players were rate base on the moment fans were waiting for. Moment where fans will say wow and George was one of those player who could grace the occasion when fans and team needed it to happen. Compare to players who play with better team or alongside skilful player as a result they score goals upon goals that the fans don't even feel the impact anymore. But when it come to big game they don't shine, they only shine in non important or small game. George was awarded these awards base on fans reactions not statistics, similar to thing you mention, he was physical, skilful, hungry when team needed to win, score important goals and give assist when needed. Therefore, trophy winning depends on squad quality. Therefore, trophies wining shouldn't be use to for his rating. He did not play world cup and did not perform well in the African cup of nation because he was on a national team that was below average. However, he is consider Africa's great not because of his score goals records but the feeling fans wanted he always provided it in crusher games. During Era there were too many great talents and strong football compare to this generation where football look a joke! soft football, average players, from defenders, modifiers to strikers. as a result the few super talents shine too bright.

Back in the mid to late 90s, the Italian league was ridiculous. Milan dominated in Europe, and both Juve and Inter were excellent. Often, the top scorers of the division would finish with around 15 goals; defenses were that good.
All that being said, Weah was the best player in the league for a couple of seasons. Before R9, this guy was unplayable.

George weah is not the best African player of all times. That's a fact. Etoo club statistics beats weah. Ballon d or is a popularity contest. He's hasn't played in a common mere nation's cup. It's a disrespect to African players who actually played in African continental football to name someone who played football in a less competitive Era, their best player, for winning a popular contest balon d or. It's total disrespect. Etoo played in a tougher Era, and won alot more than weah. At club level and international. Etoo took a relegated team mayorca to win a Copa d ray. Being their all-time greatest scorer to this day. Did weah play for a relegated team and win them a major club trophy? ??

Goal v Verona. Legend already. My favourite striker of last 20 years. Underrated by those who don’t know. Adored by those that do. Great vid. Weah should get another 10 points as reparations for what West Africa suffered as a result of European colonialism and the slave trade. Unbelievable player who lit up the pitch. I’ve seen him live in his prime and he was up their with fat Ronaldo in his prime.

So, thank you for the video featuring George Weah. You provided wonderful rare footage and I appreciate your attempt to address the incident that essentially left a stain on George's career. As such, I would hope that you understand the tone of that first sentence. It doesn't come off as one that applies to football but rather an opinion that's unnecessary.

Hi, not bad information. However, the FIFA rankings are unfair and only 4/5 African countries could qualify for the FIFA WC at the time even though there's more countries contesting than in Europe for those spots. Anyways, just pointing this out since this makes International comparisons very dodgy to say the least. Either way, keep these videos coming as I trust you also keep learning about these rating flaws that should therefore not mean much to say the least.
Maybe consider Benny McCarthy for a video as well, he was a great player that could lead to an interesting video considering his love/hate relationship with SAFA over his years as a player.

Regarding the issue with Jorge Costa, it was more than just racist remarks. There was a play during the first leg, where Weah fell on the goal line with Costa nearby. Costa, who on his best days was an absolute pr*ck, made sure to step on is hand, injuring Weah. There was consensus at the time that the incident with Costa's nose was payback
