    Sir, I have learned more from your channel than I had from expensive traditional classroom. Your videos are explicit, easy to follow, and straight to the point. Thank you very much, and God bless you always.

    Friends! Unfortunately, TH-cam removed the annotations functionality and the links from the vowels cards no longer work even on desktops. However, we have all those links in the video description. Please, use them, they work. We apologize for this inconvenience, but no one can influence TH-cam in this respect :). We'll continue looking for options to restore the interactivity.

    What are the differences between the ʌ and ə sounds? Both are relaxed sounds, right? Following the chart I see that the tongue should be in a lower position for the ə sound. Are there any other differences? (I also understand that ə is used in unstressed syllables and ʌ in stressed ones). Thank you for the excellent video. Your systematic approach rules!!!

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ultra7178 You're asking good questions. Yes, you're right, these both sounds are relaxed, the ə is used in unstressed syllables but the ʌ in stressed ones. We answered a similar question in one of our videos, take a look: th-cam.com/video/U5Oro6v0klg/w-d-xo.html

    please show me what's diferent bitween /ɑ/ and /ɔ/. Thank you !

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Diệu Hiền Phan Thị , Good question!
      The /ɑ/ is a low central vowel, which means that you pronounce it with your mouth fully open and your tongue placed very low in the center of your mouth.
      The /ɔ/ is a low back vowel, you pronounce it with your mouth fully open, just like for the /ɑ/. Your tongue should be placed very low in your mouth (again, just like for the /ɑ/ ), but for the /ɔ/ you have to pull the back of your tongue far to your throat.
      The other difference is that for the /ɑ/ sound your lips can be neutral, but you need to keep them rounded for the /ɔ/.
      By the way, if you click on the card for the /ɑ/ and then on the card for the /ɔ/ at the beginning of this video, you can compare the movement of the tongue and jaw for these sounds on the image. It's very helpful!
      Let us know if you have any other questions!

    Well, I am really confused right now. According to the "Mastering American accent" which I got on hands there is 15 vowel sounds. Anyone could provide any clarification, please?
    P/s: The book is written by Lisa Mojsin and published by Barron's.

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Dang The Hai ,
      Stay calm and keep practicing as many vowels as you can find :).
      On a serious note, in this video we've covered the essential distinct American vowels only. Here is how we see it: there are 12 "main vowels" plus 2 R-colored vowels.
      On top of that, there are three diphthongs (the sounds /aɪ/, /aʊ/, and /ɔɪ/) and five r-colored diphthongs (the sounds /ɪr/, /ɛr/, /ɑr/,
      /ɔr/, /aɪr/). So we have 22 vowel sounds in total.
      Please don't be confused, though. Once you learn how to make the essential 12+2 sounds, you can easily combine them in as many diphthongs as you want.
      BTW: "Mastering American accent" is a great book.

    Can you explain the difference between tense and lax? I couldn't understand the actions your tongue does.

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Thanh Ngo , as per definition, "tense" (especially of a muscle) means "stretched tight or rigid." "Relaxed" is the opposite of tense, it's free from tension. When we say "tense your tongue", we want you to hold your tongue tight in the position as shown on the screen. When we say "relax your tongue", we want you to free your tongue from any tension and just put it in the position we show on the screen. It should not be rigid or stretched tight.
      Hope it helps!

    The trouble is that to one character there are 3,4,5 different sounds. This is a great confusion for who writes and for who reads. Awful! We would like one sound one character and vice versa. English is really too complicated.

    Hello there. Thanks for the great tutorial again. Here is a question for you. How many Vowel sounds are there in American English?
    The reason I am asking is, I am learning from different English educators in TH-cam and every one is saying different numbers, 12, 15, 19, 22 and more than 21.

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Tedros Afenegus , hello there! It depends on how you count the vowels. In our list we have 12 single vowel sound, 2 single R-Colored vowels, 3 diphthongs, 4 R-Colored diphthongs and 1 R-Colored triphthong, so there are 22 vowels in total. Here's our list, if you need it: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rvqAbjwRxzBAcHOrPe4dlJdO6Q5wLIWZ7QH4mEy_YDY/edit?usp=sharing

    I love your videos they are really helpful but to be honest i am having a hard time hearing the difference between the Vowel Sound /ɔ/ and Vowel Sound / ʌ / they actually sound the same to me, can you help me with those sounds?
    .

      +Valentina Luna , Valentina, the best recommendation would be quite usually: try do do as many exercises as possible first to work on pronouncing each of these two sounds individually. The main goal first should be to try and understand what your tongue jaw and lips are doing when you make those sounds. By repeating them after our speaker you'll get a better idea of how they are made and will train yourself to hear them.
      After that move on practicing those sounds in words. Believe us, it works.
      The difference between the /ʌ / as in the word "but" and the /ɔ/ as in the word "on" is significant, although, it's common that non-native English speakers can't always hear it.
      The /ʌ / is a relaxed vowel, which means that your lips and tongue should be relaxed. Your tongue should be placed in the center of your mouth (not forward nor back and not high, nor low).
      The /ɔ/ is a back vowel, which means that your tongue should be pulled far back in your mouth. It should also be placed very low and it should be very flat. The /ɔ/ is also an open vowel, so your mouth should be open very wide.
      By the way, you don't have to open your mouth wide to make the /ʌ /.
      Here's our video about the /ʌ / sound: th-cam.com/video/X1utTZqC3AI/w-d-xo.html
      and this video should help you with the /ɔ/: th-cam.com/video/pr_KAu-_Hmo/w-d-xo.html
      Hope it helps! Let us know if you have any questions!

      +Ivan Gabriel, if you're happy with the way you sound when speaking English, you're fine! Keep doing it the way you're doing it.
      Our videos are only helpful to those who are looking to learn *American accent*. So, in order to learn that kind of pronunciation, they need to learn the movements of the lips, tongue, and jaw. You can still speak good English even if you don't do that, but again, it depends on how you want to sound :). Whatever makes you happy! :)
