    I had bought 2 bare root apple trees a few months ago and then the real cold weather started so was having to heel them in. So now as in yesterday I planted both trees as you described above. One tree is going to be trained as an espalier so am concerned about pruning the tree so soon when the tree has only just been planted as in the roots are not going to be established for sometime now. Am a beginner gardener so want to get things right from the beginning if poss. Thank you

      This article gives a good overview on pruning espaliers: www.rhs.org.uk/fruit/apples/training-espalier Pruning can seem a bit brutal sometimes, but done correctly it will help you to get a really good-shaped tree.

    A formidable video, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little bit analysis on this. And he in fact purchased me breakfast as a result of I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading extra on this topic. If attainable, as you turn out to be experience, would you mind updating your youtube channel with extra particulars? It is extremely helpful for me. Big thumb up for this youtube channel put up!

    Trees most definitely can feel. So they do have "feelings". Idk how you can say "doing this or not doing this can stress the tree out." And then say they don't have feeling. Stress is a feeling. Your videos are very useful and informative. But I'm not sure how you couldn't see that plant life is very much so responsive, and alive and aware of its surroundings. Maybe it's not as obvious as I think it is. But either way, good video. I learned alot.

    Hi can you recommend a preventative pest spray for my apple tree that I can use? It's about 4 years old and fruiting this year for the first time and looks ok so far. Ideally something can I can spray in the spring after flowering and the fruits have set and then maybe during the summer to prevent pests before they can start to become and issue? Cheers

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lyndon. I'd never spray a tree like that. Best to let pest predators keep pests to a manageable level. That said, there are a few preventative measures you can take, such as setting up pheromone traps or putting sticky tape around the trunk of the tree in winter. For more ideas, check through our apple tree pest guides: www.growveg.com/pests/us-and-canada/plant-problems/apple-pests-identification/

    I want to plant some fruit trees in container. Can you give me some advices?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, aim to use a soil-based potting mix. In the UK I would suggest John Innes Number 2, which is great for plants that will be in containers for a long time. Use containers that are a little bit larger than the pot the fruit tree came in, then gradually pot them on into larger containers as they fill the current container with roots. Keep them well watered and feed regularly during the growing season.

    How do I know if my Apple tree is dwarf espalier, large or cordon? It is a grafted tree with 5 apple types bought from Lowe’s. Please advise.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looking through the Lowe's website, I suspect what you have bought is a semi-dwarf tree - so a 'normal' tree. If it was an espalier it would have horizontal branches coming out from a central stem. And it wouldn't be a cordon with multiple varieties grafted onto it.

    • @HR-fc3bt
      @HR-fc3bt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      GrowVeg I appreciate your help. Below is the link to the tree I bought. It is in a 5 gal bucket. It has 5 grafts. It is about 6 feet tall. Some of the grafts are already blooming. I need to decide where to transplant it . I have the option to transplant it near my house wall or near the backyard wooden wall. Both the spots get enough sunlight. My decision will be based on the size to which it will grow. If it is going to be a big tree. I must not transplant it near the house wall I think 🤔. Also let me know do I need to have 2 apple trees for it to pollinate? Thanking you in anticipation. www.lowes.ca/product/trees/5-gal-4-in-1-apple-tree-351652. What would be the approximate height to which it will grow ?

  • @1Craftyone

    I'm about to plant several varieties of fruit trees which I obtained from a very reputal grower. Most already have fruit growing and the branches do seem very stressed from the weight. In your one bit you mentioned removing the blooms, and I already past that stage? Should I just pull off all the fruit growing and wait for next years? Thanks, I'm new at this

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the trees are quite young then yes, I'd be inclined to pull off the fruits to avoid stressing the branches. The trees need to bulk out - a bit like putting on some muscles - before they are strong enough to fruit. By removing any fruits the trees can concentrate on getting established.

    With these fruit trees what distance do you need from houses or walls?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aim to keep the base of the trunk about one-and-a-half to two feet (45-60cm) away from a wall so that the roots aren't sitting in its rain shadow. You'll need to lean the trunk into the wall if you are then hoping to train the fruit tree against it.

    • @karpetcabin
      @karpetcabin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrowVeg thanks! Is there potential for fruit tree roots to damage walls or foundations?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is always potential for damage, but fruit trees are grown up against walls all over the world with no problem, so I think you should be fine, especially with the trunk planted slightly away from the wall then leaned into it as suggested.

      Snap one of the thinner branches. If it is brittle and snaps easily then the wood is dead and your tree may have died.

  • @jharrell23867
    @jharrell23867 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should not let the mulch touch the tree base... I always leave about 6-8 inches of space for the tree base as the mulch holds moisture better and can cause the tree base to rot and if it is a wood based mulch which is usually the case is also growing nasty wood eating diseases and parasites which can infect your tree. I have lost more baby trees this way before learned the proper method & even if it does not kill the tree it will not have a great harvest if it has had to fight off sickness. This will increase your harvest mates.

    • @jharrell23867
      @jharrell23867 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** No problem, sorry if i gave you a scare lol. Using mulch is still a good idea and good for the tree just be sure to leave a small area around the base clear of mulch.
