When I was young, we had a tenant who took advantage of my dad and took 3 years to finally evict him. My dad didn't speak English and the person would destroy the apartment, take pictures, and tell the judge we were negligent as landlords. TBH, it's the dirtiest trick in the book because they wouldn't even let us go in and "fix" it. The Court dates just keep getting pushed back... When we finally got the apartment back, it looked like they took a jackhammer to the whole apartment.

All of our stories are different. I lost my home to squatters trespassing in my home. My three incomes was jeopardized. Every time I would get a job. People unknown to me would somehow illegally know where I worked and lie to my Employer like they are the ones due money and not me. If you call the number the Employer gives you. No One would answer or they would give you another number and you still won't get any answers to why People took money out of your pay check. This was not an accident. I think that is harassment when there is not a response. My savings was depleted because of all of my jobs being disrupted. I would frequent Family homes searching for work to save money although the Courts and the Government knew I was due money. Every time I lived with a Friend or Family Member I would buy my own tissue, washing powder, feminine products, and food. In May 2021 I was paying for a Hotel room saving my money. I was invited to stay in Hayward without Anyone in the apartment so that I could pay rent. People cannot expect you to give them much if they do not like you to clean the home or if you cannot rest to go to your grave yard shift at work. I NEVER spent the night in Hayward for one year because of my grave yard shift so it was only fair to pay my fair share in everything else like rent. On my days off most often I would go to a Hotel. Once I started spending the night in Hayward. I had saved money for my younger Son and I and of course know there is not any problems paying your fair share. The problem is I been getting beat and lied on. The initial rent agreement has raised in less than one year to an extra $750.00. That is illegally when Hayward has rent control.

They do cover it but it just isn’t as popular as videos about bad landlords. I’m a tenant in NYC but my parents are landlords in SF. I can empathize with both sides which is why I do wish the system was more fair and balanced to both sides. It’s unfortunate when you get a bad tenant or bad landlord but it shouldn’t matter which side they are on. If they’re bad, they’re bad. Stupid courts!

My parents have been landlords for over 20 years. The worst we have is a tenant who is always late with rent, but he always pays. Bad tenants aren’t the norm, but if you do get one, it can really suck and drain you. But if you can avoid a bad tenant, then you can potentially finance a lot of things. For my parents, rental income paid the mortgage on their home, paid my college tuition, gave them decent retirement savings, etc. They never used leases until recently with some of their tenants and never did background checks, but there’s a reason why most landlords ask for references, background checks, proof of income, credit score, etc. And they can report you on your credit report if they have your social security number. The flip side is if your landlord is not a good one or made a mistake in filing a court case against you, then you get stuck with a bad item on your credit report as a tenant, which can affect your ability to get another apartment or even get hired. Basically, there are tools that either party can use to hurt people. I would also avoid buying property in a city or county that has strong tenants rights protection. I come from SF and it’s heavily tenant-friendly. My parents got lucky and haven’t yet had a bad tenant but it would majorly suck in a city that is super liberal. Btw,I’m super liberal and understand the need for tenant rights, as a renter myself here in NYC. Ultimately, I wish things were just fair and balanced to protect both sides. Like, you can’t compare a corporate landlord with a mom and pop landlord. Good luck whatever you decide to do. But if you’re good at monitoring your finances, it’s worth looking into decent long term investments that are relatively safe in the finance market.
