Expert Card Technique, Royal Road and Encyclopedia of Card Tricks are basically the Hugard and Braue holy trinity of card magic. I would highly recommend all of them to anybody taking card magic seriously.

Ben Manuel I haven't read Expert Card Technique, how does it differ from the other ones?

    • @benmanuel4645
      @benmanuel4645 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Pablo Carrión It goes into greater detail on a wider range of card sleights than the other two. It has moves like the side slip, the bottom deal, etc, that Royal Road and Encyclopedia don't have.

I literally have only a single week into card magic. I got inspired after watching David Blaine's Real or Magic. so I bought a deck of Bicycle Cards from CVS. I do think basics should be taught on TH-cam. In this whole week, I literally learned how to dribble, spring, fan, double lift, triple lift, Hindu shuffle, swing cut, false cuts, back palm, etc. I also know card tricks like 2 Card Monte, Sandwich, The Ambitious Card, Doubleback Sandwich, etc. I think only the magician who created it should be the one to expose the trick. but anyways, thanks for teaching me this trick, and I actually ordered this book after watching this video. Hopefully I catch on quick reading as well as I have watching videos! You're usually the person I go to for tutorials!

Yo Chris, honestly your videos are getting better and better, you put more and more of yourself in them and it is really something that we (viewers) we can feel and I personaly enjoy that. The fact that you share so much more than just tuto. I'll buy that book cause it seems really interesting, even tho I have never learnt a trick from a book. I wonder how it works, but since you gave your word I'll trust you and give it a shot. Thanks again man. Peace out

So glad you did this Chris. Too many TH-cam tutorials are from ppl who don’t even know where the move came from. And unless ppl like you who have a strong following talk about the genesis of the BEST magic out there, it will eventually get lost to time. And I for one don’t want to see that happen.

I like Chris' approach to teaching magic like this, he doesn't just give you the trick he credits sources and gives you the ways to find them.
That was my problem with Disturb Reality was that there was no limit on what could be taught and what should be credited.

What an amazing way to deal with the hate of sharing magic on TH-cam. I'd just like to say I love your videos and you are by far my favourite TH-camr and the fact that you are not only teaching method but also where the trick comes from and where to find more I strongly agree with that it's a brilliant thing to do so thank you because now lots of people will be able to get a foot hold in magic.

Great content; great advise, Chris. This is what is needed in this age of mass information. Skimming over information at 30,000 feet, never diving in, getting into the weeds of the thing, just doesn't work. Truth be told, your advise is what separates those that want to learn, and those that REALLY want to learn and make it a part of their existence.

that was very nice Chris, I totally agree that much of the good stuff is hidden in books. if you want to keep a secret, don't tell a magician, put it in a book. I am loving the way that the new generation of magicians are putting nice little touches, twists and wrinkles to some of these old effects.
Expert Card Technique is worth the read, just for the history and some of the amazing principles that people created during the hey day of playing cards.
    Thanks

Let me just tell you this Chris Ramsay your tutorial is freaking awesome....i liked the rising card technique very much but its not just my style.....but the thing i learned from this video was tht overhand shuffle control u did.....i do the normal overhand shuffle but the prob with tht is i control the top stack by running it 2 times but its not tht deceiving as ppl can get it if u do it for them for couple of times....these ppl are generally my family members who i practice my sleights on and i cant fool them more than 3 times in a row with this control so i run the cards 4times to make it more convincing but tht takes too much time....with the method u just did....i can do it by just doing it 3 times....thts awesome thank you

There are SOOOO many amazing books. I actually worked about 10 years ago in the secret library/auction house of a magician, cataloging books, gaffs, and equipment, and cleaning them up for auction. I got to learn how so many iconic tricks are done. I think my favorite thing I ever cleaned up for auction was a book on illusions from Harry Houdini's personal collection and had his signature in it. The amount of material out there is astounding. I have forgotten how many non-disclosure statements I had to sign about not identifying my former employer or the location and name of the library/auction house... but that was probably the weirdest job I've ever had.

Learned this forever ago. Great video on it man. A tip for the rise: once you have the selected card in position and ready to rise and you are holding the deck ready to release pressure, if you put your pinky on the bottom of the deck instead of the side with the other three fingers, when you reach the point where the card will not rise anymore, very slowly and smoothly lower your pinky that is underneath the deck (which will cause the entire deck except the selected card to lower. giving the illusion of the selected card to go higher). It will help increase the height of the risen card a little bit. Hope that makes sense.
    Once again great video chris,
    Cheers.

  • @ChrisCarries_EDC

Great vid and thanks for the tip on the book. Will have to seek that out!
A very similar trick that I saw on TH-cam years ago that I prefer (as it doesn’t involve smooshing the card!) is to place your index finger of your other hand on top of the edge of the deck, then use your pinky on that hand to flick the card out of the deck into mid air. Then have fun catching it!

Another great video, thank you. I think this is a great idea, I think this can only help the book sales. You are only giving away one trick away, and probably one of the basics in the book, and that will encourage those really interests to seek out the book for all the additional knowledge. Thanks

My love of magic precedes TH-cam and I was always disappointed when I spent money on 'magic.' TH-cam renewed my passion. I was at a loss on where to find something to learn from. Thank you for giving out where you learned from. I don't know any magicians and never would have had access otherwise.

For anyone who is having trouble with the Faro Shuffle, i found a great trick that makes it a lot easier !
Just bend both halves in different directions (one up, one down) and it is much easier then :)

The beginners bible in card magic is most definately The Royal Road to Card Magic. I think this should be covered because i'm sure there are many budding magicians watching this wantin to start somewhere?! Great video though and Expert Card Techniques is a must along with So Sato's "Secrets of So Sato".

Excellent tutorial. I also checked the price on the book and it's a good price for a magic book but unfortunately, I'm not able to learn from books. I learn by watching and your video made it easy. If that book also came with videos like yours that taught the tricks, I would purchase it.

THAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!!! I've been looking for a video for ages like this that explains a really good book to read for magic. I've been looking at a few but don't have heaps of money to spend and was looking for one that is considered to be "one of the best".
