    Steve, I just finished building the Pass DIY Audio Amp Camp Amp yesterday! I bought the kit on whim to see if it could comfortably drive my Tekton Double Impact speakers. Well! It not only worked perfectly right off my work bench, the sound is shockingly good! My Tektons never sounded better with deep fast bass, involving soundstage with depth, width and height AND PACE. My deepest thanks to Nelson Pass for his simply brilliant amp design and to DIY Audio for offering this easy to build amp kit with really good online build instructions, videos and support. I aso want to thank you, Steve, for the wonderful Nelson Pass TH-cam videos of this self effacing audio genius! Cheers!

It's available on the diy audio store as well and designed by Nelsons right hand assistant wizard there at pass labs😀 you can build it just as a preamp, just as a class a headphone amp or build It to include a switch to go from a preamp to a class a heaphone amp. The lack of arrogance and bullshit is so refreshing. Especially in HiFi. The focus on getting as many people into the best experience they can have is what it's all about.

    Have been a fan of Nelson Pass since the '80s. Never would have dreamed I would get a nod of approval from him directly of the ACA I built from a pair of the available circuit boards on diyaudio site. Hat's off to Nelson Pass for being directly involved and being so open source with his knowledge. Not to mention all of the other bright minds he has managed to drag out of the woodwork with his thinking out loud on these topics.

    I built the Amp Camp Amp as well. It was my first amp building experience. I had no idea how good that amp sounded prior to building it. For anyone who might be interested, the performance out of that little box is truly amazing. It's well worth the effort and expense. It's easy to build and doesn't cost a great deal of money.

I already own a Pass Labs Aleph 3 amplifier (great amp) and it’s amazing how much the Amp Camp Amp sounds like the Aleph 3. All are great amps. Nelson Pass is the genuine article!

    I have built a total of three of these little gems - both the original mono-blocks, and a pair of the more recent stereo kits from DIY Audio store. I have built a fair number of solid state and tubed kits before - going back as far as Hafler from the late 70's / mid 80s, before a bit of a hiatus until the late 90's and early '00's . These are about as drop dead simple a kit as I can imagine, and within the operational limits of their modest ow power ratings, quite a delightful sounding little piece. Within the applications to which they were used - low 90db range sensitivity full range drivers, as the budget couldn't afford high efficiency exotica such as Lowthers, Tannoys, etc (or the physical space required for enclosures to do such drivers justice) - they punched way above their price class.
    That said, his higher powered, and substantially higher priced First Watt designs are on another plane altogether, something with which - as I think you now include a SIT3 in your electronic harem - you are quite aware.
    The DIY Audio world owes papa more plaudits than we can deliver. Thanks Steve for sharing these short interviews with those of us who are familiar with his work since the days of Threshold, but who've never been fortunate enough to interact with him directly - these come across with such genuine intimacy that we feel like we've just sat down for a coffee or beer with him.

    • @SuperMadpom
      @SuperMadpom 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should hear them driving 105db plus Lowther back loaded horns. The simplicity of the design resulting from not having to deliver huge watts pays off in spades when hooked up to efficient speakers.

    I have one of these. It took about 2 hours to build, although it was not my first project. It sounds stupidly good. It is currently in use in a tri-amped system paired with two single ended triode tube amps. It powers the ribbon tweeter and matches quite well with the tubes. If you want to explore the single ended world, this is a good place to start. It is inexpensive, powerful enough to run a wide variety of speakers and still has that single ended magic. I suspect that after this video, DIYaudio will sell out of these kits fast.

    • @johnlebeau5471
      @johnlebeau5471 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But the NAD isn't Class A single ended. Nelson discussed the use of the switching power supply in his written explanation of the design, knowing audiophiles abhor switching power supplies. If I remember the qoute properly it was: "It works. Get over it." Nelson Pass doesn't care about convention.

      Would 90db 8ohm speakers be ok and are these mono blocks? as I am tempted but 8 watts of power may fall short, love Class A amps

    • @motorradmike
      @motorradmike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To The Max, your 8 ohm speakers are an easier load to an amplifier than my 4 ohm rated speakers even though they are spec’d at 97dB efficiency, 4 ohm speaker require more current generally speaking. How loud you play music is something only you can answer. I play music at a room filling volume level. Not let’s party loud. A single ended 8 watt amp does not have a lot of headroom, class A or not. To my knowledge the Amp Camp Amp is rated the same for 8 and 4 ohm output. Someone responded to me that the ACA acquitted itself quite well with his 88dB speakers and the “little amp that could” compared favorably with triode tube amp. He didn’t say what his tube amp is rated at. The kit is a stereo 8 watt x 2. The Pass stereo amp can be bridged for mono block by using an XLR’ for each channel or internally with a switch if you are using single ended interconnects depending how construct it. I opted for the XLR connection if I decide to go mono block. The Amp Camp Amp Nelson was holding up was the original mono only amp. The revised DIY Audio amp kit is 2 channel stereo.. I hope this helps.

      @@doriarama You sound like the "qualified" builder who told me he could have built The House of Steel for $80,000. It cost me $170,000 to build. Material costs were $100,000 and labour was $70,000. He declined to tell me who he would have ripped off, the suppliers or the workers.

      It's hardly like Mr Pass needs to do this. He's the kind of educator that we should be grateful for. He has inspired more people in the audio industry and DIY audio world than probably anyone else - and his stuff sounds great to boot. Sure, you can spend a lot of money, but then you don't have to if you don't want to - many people follow on in low-budget projects and he and his fellow enthusiasts are just as happy to answer their questions too.

    I built the Amp Camp Amp last year duel mono block with duel linear mono power supplies from diyaudiostore. Right now I’m building the BA-3 preamplifier designed by Nelson to complement my mono block ACA.
    These kits for their price certainly beat all the Big Box franchise names with the fancy advertisement in the box stores for sound quality.

      I'm thinking of building a ba3 preamp as well. I have heard Waynes (nelson pass assistant at pass labs) has a whammy class a headphone preamp that works great as a preamp with the amp camp as well. You can add a switch so you get a terrific heaphone amp as well that will drive any headphones. Now I just need to build my whammy and class a 1.6 amp cam monos😀
