I actually had number 1 tried on me back when I was 18. First guy pulled me off my scooter by using my backpack (first he blocked the sidewalk, and then ran after me when I just went into the bike line to get around) I turned and jabbed him (just to get him to release it and create distance) and next thing I know another guy just chilling at the bus stop before was swinging at me, luckily I noticed it and in the adrenaline rush it seemed very slow and sloppy. I took space and waited to see if they were going to continue trying to hurt me or whether they realized they were outmatched. They started talking about how many people they had (which is a sign they didn't have confidence in winning the fight if i resisted and I started being able to think rationally around this point) and the bus showed up and everything deescalated and I was fine. Still shook me up though, just random people attacking me scootering down the street only a few blocks from my house.

hellwroughtangel I can relate to that confusion, chaos and at the same time hyper awareness and temporal change. It's a very corporeal situation. It's amazing how quickly the muscle memory jumps in.

When you are so hopeless you train for throwing sucker punches lol.

Yeah I was just thinking that, but i guess it is a pretty good trick, sometimes you gotta play dirty especially when you're in danger

In a bar fight it’s usually the most effective one. A well landed sucker punch usually is a knockout, end of story right there, unless other people jump in and it becomes a brawl fest.

Sucker punches are actually good techniques and very effective I can't believe people actually care about looking good in a fight in a life or death situation

i think most folks here have missed my point here. yes, yes you may need to sucker punch time to time but that wasn't the point, the point was that you willingly train for a sucker punch, rather than, well, being not pathetic enough to need to train that and just keep the training for when that sweet "look the other way with square stance and chuck the fisticuff across hoping it gives the guy muah good night" doesn't do the trick if you catch my drift.

Another thing to look at in a confrontation is demeanor, one second the guy is angry and screaming at the top of his lungs and the next he's smiling looks away and then boom! I've seen it a lot.

Yes, that's very similar psychology to the turn-away and strike. Basically the victim thinks that the confrontation is over and then - BOOM - the haymaker comes flying.

I also. Spend a lot of time worrying about surprise attacks. I have been caught out by a surprise attack. Lots of times.
Usually, I run away but the last time. The guy. Hit me, and he ran off, so. I am making progress.
In about 2 years now, the worst thing that happened was having, a milkshake poured over me.
So, I am either less active, or getting the hang of avoiding violence!

If they are really hostile many times they become really calm all of a sudden and then they throw the sucker punch.

I found what I would call the most prolific sucker punch to be the simple act of acting aggressive as intimidation such that they test if they can get up close and then just start throwing punches without the 'turn away' element.

2:20 this one appears on films/ TV so often*, I've always wondered which way to move if I saw it coming - assume either back or away from the direction of the punch but the main thing would be just to move I guess :)
    * I remember it in CSI (episode called "Fannysmacking" of all things) - Nick Stokes loses his professional poise for a moment and smacks someone who's taunting him.

You forgot the almost kissing bro down where someone punches first. Or is that not considered a sucker punch?

  • @edi9892

Last year, I came from work and one guy approached me and asked me politely something. The problem was that there was another guy, who looked way too similar, as if he was his brother, but tried to act as if they didn't belong together. While the first talked, the other approached me at 90° and I made a step back and to the side to keep both in my vision. I made another step towards stacking them and the first one wished me a nice day and turned around looking a bit embarrassed... The other guy went in a different direction and both hang out in a place where pretty much everyone else was only in transit... I probably avoided a sucker punch, but chances are someone else got it later in my place... EDIT: I should add that even 2:1 they probably didn't fancy the odds as I was a lot taller than both of them... which makes me wonder why they even tried in the first place...
Another warning: a neighbour of mine was infamous throughout my country for his criminal record even before he got of age to be held liable for his actions and by that time, he had filled already entire shelves of police records! He was famous for assault, robbery and vandalism, especially whilst skipping school... The funny thing was that I was afraid of many people back then, but not of him, because he looked like a total pushover, like someone that would get bullied! His signature move was to approach a stranger and ask him something and then while his victim was distracted thinking of a reply, he would slap both ears, grab the ears and pull the head into a headbutt and kneestrike and from there kick the downed victim until he was KO and only then rob the poor bloke! This resulted in ruptured eardrums, plenty of broken noses and traumatized the entire neighbourhood, but none imagined him to look like this! As soon as he got famous, he was deported because he reached his birthday...

Good story. I feel sorry for the guy. Maybe the community gave him no choice but to behave that way.
At least you deported him . That's kinder than. Busting him up.

good stuff. What an attacker does is walk up saying "What did you say to me!" Then he will say "What up n%@^@& What the fuck did you call me?" and then immediately do a series of fast sucker punches! How to protect?:
