Recent subscriber here. G'day from Australia! Whatever they pay you, it's not enough. There's so much going on at once and you need to be across it all, 3 people talking at once on the radio, what's the barge doing? what's the water doing? what's the weather doing? where's my camera pointing? where is every other vessel going? is everyone safe? what's for lunch? Really enjoying your content!
Appreciate you Tim, i feel as though I learn more spending 20 minutes listening to your years of experience...so just wanting to let you know how grateful I am for you sharing 🙏
I love cruising and feeling the power of the ships. Your videos give me the same feeling along with insight as to what goes into the job and the finesse in doing it!
When I first subscribed you were somewhere around trying to get 15K subscribers. I wish I had been one of the plank owners like I am on the SV Paquitta. Now look at you! Going on 65,000 subscribers. That's because of the personal care, the technical know-how, and the sheer adventure of moving these barges around in varying conditions. You're just great at this, Tim.!
I love you injecting your view of politics and friendships. My brother lives with me and we are also 180 degrees apart. We get along just fine....... even tho he is wrong. 🤣 You would be a fun guy to learn from and work with, Tim. I have a friend who owned our local Piloting company and his son is a recently retired pilot.... tho he's still licenced for our local port, so he can stand in when needed. I worked for an employee of theirs a number of times over the years. He operated ocean going tugs. He recently passed. I have 3 books that he had written over his lifetime career operating a tug. The first family I mentioned, wrote a book on the local Piloting dating back to the late 1800's. The one thing that is easily seen in all of you, is your personality and demeanor. Calm, cool and collected. That must be a job requirement for your occupation. I enjoy your play by play of what you're doing and why.
Thank you for describing your thinking pattern (did I say that right?) when you are maneuvering. I've never been able to put it in words. Operating LCU's in the Army many years ago we faced similar situations daily. We received very little training and due to the Army using all it's Warrant ranks for helicopter pilots, we had very few on our heavy boats. As a result, the best crew-members operated the boats regardless of rank. We had at least one PFC and several Spec4's doing the job. We went through rolls of Tums like they were candy. My stomach is screwed up to this day over 50 years later. At least you had a beautiful day. Thanks again.
Was in the coast guard many years ago. Worked for Captain of the Port of New York. The Harbor has real been cleaned up. I remember while on Patrol at night hitting a half sunk telephone pole
Tim I really enjoy watching your channel. You talking about your differences with this tanker man is great. I strive not to judge anyone on their views. I can “agree to disagree” and think the same of you as human. To me, this is a way I learn and enrich my life.
Gidday (Good Day) from New Zealand, Tim. I enjoy your work. Go well and I hope life treats you both kindly and well. My grandmother said "if you can't say something nice, it is better to say nothing at all". I love your approach to life.
While I don't own a boat, I observed something fairly cool with some charter cats. E.g. the Lagoon 450 we chartered had its rudders forward of the propellers. I don't know the exact philosophy behind that but it comes in handy - when you're moving forward, you usually have a good water flow over the rudders, so you can steer just fine when sailing. When you're slow, you can just steer with differential power on the engines. But when you're docking, that configuration comes in handy: to walk the boat to the left, you steer to the left, then do a left twist. The prop wash of the engine going backwards pushes the stern to the left, the engine going forward pushes the bow to the left. Voila - walking to the left.
Thank you very much for watching. Yes. In a typical configuration, you have no directional control of reverse thrust other than the way you make. But flanking rudders, or rudders in front of the wheels do the exact opposite. CUOTO
IMO this is a terrible design that really shows the design decisions that go into charter cats - it is done to increase sailing speed / allow a smaller rudder (in combination with saildrives which are also ridiculously overcomplex and basically impossible to repair underway / in the water) but you end up with boats that can ONLY be controlled in close quarters/docking/low speeds if both engines are working... What's the point of 2 engines for redundancy if you can only steer the boat with both of them?
@@VeganSurf I wouldn't be so sure about the small rudder. I think it's even somewhat larger than one aft of the screws, since it needs to control the boat under way without the engines running. I agree with you about the issue with the sail drives but I'd need to try out the feasibility of traveling on one engine for extended distances (partly also to save fuel after having a problem (e.g. losing your mast) in the middle of an ocean and trying to reach land before you run out of fuel). I think I'll post that question to a few cat cruisers with that configuration... 🙂

Thank you Mr. Tug boat Captain 😊for calling out rudder and engine orders for how to DOCK. Be it big barges or your private vessel. 😊 Its so interesting to hear you narrative so calmly doing these turns to smooth hook ups. Such education for a young person thinking about maritime work.😊❤
Tim, most twin engine pleasure boats that are internal engines have a bow thruster, they can walk to port easily using it. set rudder for a turn to right and use the thruster to push to the left, you go left.
I kinda have to disagree with the ..most twin inboard engine pleasure boats having bow thrusters, I would say most over 50ft, I have owned or been on several twin inboard boats from 28’ to 42’ that did not have bow thrusters, of course I’m speaking of the older wooden boats. You may be correct about the newer glass hull yachts which are way above my budget…lol

Very much enjoy your vlogs, Captain Tim. So interesting, informative and enjoyable. Have learned much. You tell such awesome stories as well. Shared both channels. Many thanks. Be safe. Blessings. Sherry 🥰 🙏 💞 ⚓
well said sir. to me our differences are what makes the world go around. I had a couple of lifelong friends and politicly we had on different pages, a different way of getting to the same place though. and we all wish only the best for all. I have been blessed to have had loving parents and blessed to be with my wife for almost 40 years and we love each other unconditionally, but we do not talk politics much. but if and when we do, we never take the differences personally because we both know we only want the best possible outcome for all no matter what that is. thanks for the awesome videos I look forward to watching your past and future videos...
Tim, Would normally agree with your take on politics & friendship, but we are in different times right now. Jimmy Carter made mistakes, but was an honorable man who wasn't trying to transform America into something the founders never intended, destroying it & maybe the Free World in the process. Friendship & even family can't compare with the love I feel for America.
Hi Tim, Hey, I’m 72 and I’ll tell you something, 2 things that I refuse to talk about, with anyone are religion and politics, if people could do that, we can have a much happier world 👍🏻 (that’s not too say that I don’t argue about these 2 things with myself, in my head which probably keeps me as crazy as I am, I guess) just food for thought. Speaking of food, dinner time! See what I mean, crazy 😂 Thanks for another great ride, Ron
Thank you very much for watching Ron. I do think the world would be a better place if people would chill out a little and mind to their own business. CUOTO
Another great video Tim, It's nice to hear you talking about some other things, the little side track that was most interesting. We folks over in England will certainly be following events in the US later this year. I was thinking, let's say your boss phones you up. ''Hi Tim, how are you doing, your brand new tug boat arrives in a few days and we sold the one you are on now to a buyer in Amsterdam. We said we would get it to him so we'd like you to top up with diesel and sail across the Atlantic.'' Would that be feasible in a tug boat that size or would it be too risky?
Thank you for watching James. Absolutely! In fact, I would do almost anything for a gig like that. All our boats are "classed" so open ocean and a transatlantic trip would not be an issue. CUOTO
I've been to Australia many times flying a cargo jumbo jet. I have done about 20+ skydives in Australia on my days off. They would not allow me to skydive, unless I brought my own gear...so I brought my own gear the next month. Had a blast skydiving in Australia and Hawaii that month. Blue Sky's.
Hi Captain Tim! If you're going port-to, you might want to drop the port side Yokis, right? Ahh, they did. Good! You made that look super easy, captain Tim! CUOTO
Friendship has to be based on trust. I might be able to trust someone on the little things, when they're within my eyesight, but if I can't trust someone's loyalty to our community, I'll stick close to them for another reason.
Your talk about politics got me to subscribe. I hate the division we are experiencing and the fact that people, well a lot of people, listen to reply instead of listening to learn. Anyway, thanks for the voice of reason.
Very smart you are and I agree with you. Respect of opposing views is very important to democracy! As Evelyn Beatrice Hall said and I paraphrase, “I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it!”
Tim I'm from another country, and we're divided maybe even more than America. I couldn't agree more with you - it's stupid if you're willing to lose a friend because you want to convince him. Good luck.
"Complaining"...... what good does it provide, little from my perspective. I feel certain w/ your discerning eye, you could write volumes from each dock to dock trip of all the things you saw that were questionable. Experience gives you that critical eye to see things none of us might notice? I'd want you as a teacher if I were seeking knowledge in becoming a Captain. Yep, I could only hope for a good teacher w/ a good disposition. I learn about people here Mr. Tim, you're a great study/ Thanks.
great relaxing videos to watch powerful machines move slowly. A question, your tug boat how does it keep the barge straight with the tug even when you push from one side or the other. At first I thought it was a fuel ship instead of a fuel barge because it seemed like one single thing
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. When made up alongside, we use something we call "pinch". We make up at a slight angle and if we get it right, it steers straight. I have a number of videos showing this. CUOTO
I always enjoy your channel Tim. I am familiar about the subscription issue lately. I think TH-cam is unsubscribing people after one year and if the subscribers think they are subscribed continuously then they wont notice that. It has happened to me a few times. Kinda frustrating that TH-cam is policing an annual subscription. At least that is what happened to me. I guess they are not notifying subscribers that their subscription is not continouss.
17:00 - If more people thought like this, we'd be so much better off as a country. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone. It's how you act on that disagreement that makes all the difference.
Tim laying down truth bombs on political opinions!! If we all followed this advice, the world would be e better place. A politician (who I typically disagreed with) once said “it is OK to question someone’s methods, but not their motives”. I have found that to be very helpful. We all want to solve the problems, we just disagree on how. Thanks for the great advice Tim.
Thank you for watching. On the one or on the two are passing arrangements made between two ships. On one is short for a one whistle pass or port to port. On two is a two whistle pass meaning starboard to starboard pass. CUOTO
In a civilized society political differences don't matter. But in a decaying disordered one where rule of law becomes political it does greatly. Neighbors will turn in neighbors, friends and family. Therein lies the danger for wanting to stay in touch. Look around, that is where we are right now.
I was familiar with Paul before I discovered your channel. I don’t recall you mentioning him before, I was hoping it wasn’t because you didn’t like him. Cool to see the HQ from the tug’s upper house.
Thank you again for watching. But we do have only one rule. We try very hard to not "Directly" name tugs, companies or customers as it gets me in trouble with my employer. CUOTO
Thank you for watching John. Usually barges are designated "clean oil" or "black oil". Going from clean to black does not require cleaning, but the other way does. The process is known as "Butterworthing". CUOTO
The TH-cam subscriber shenanaagins is their way of pruning dormant subscriptions.. As I understand it, channels rating is improved by subscriber numbers. If those numbers are out of date with people that use to be interested in a channel, TH-cam are "losing out". By pruning subscribers, those that are still interested (therefore bona fide subscribers) can resubscribe, those that are no longer interested just let it pass. Thats the benevolent version. The malevolent version is them trying to reduce their payments to you.
Thank you again for watching. You are correct. But would you put all your faith in the lowest paid guy on the boat hoping he hasn't fallen asleep or worse? Mad respect to those guys. CUOTO

Leadership. Thanks, Tim!
Thank you for watching William. CUOTO
Very much enjoy your vlogs, Captain Tim. So interesting, informative and enjoyable. Have learned much. You tell such awesome stories as well. Shared both channels. Many thanks. Be safe. Blessings. Sherry 🥰 🙏 💞 ⚓
Thank you very much for watching Sherry and especially for sharing both channels! I really appreciate that. CUOTO
well said sir. to me our differences are what makes the world go around.
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Hi Tim,
Hey, I’m 72 and I’ll tell you something, 2 things that I refuse to talk about, with anyone are religion and politics, if people could do that, we can have a much happier world 👍🏻 (that’s not too say that I don’t argue about these 2 things with myself, in my head which probably keeps me as crazy as I am, I guess) just food for thought. Speaking of food, dinner time! See what I mean, crazy 😂
Thanks for another great ride, Ron
CUOTO
Nicely done once again!!
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
I've been to Australia many times flying a cargo jumbo jet. I have done about 20+ skydives in Australia on my days off. They would not allow me to skydive, unless I brought my own gear...so I brought my own gear the next month. Had a blast skydiving in Australia and Hawaii that month. Blue Sky's.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Another smooth landing, my friend...great job!
Thank you Sput! It's not as hard as pushing on the cyclic and pulling collective. You are the man! CUOTO
Great job. Good friends
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Great video TimBatSea Thank you
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Great videos as usual. Keep it up stay safe
Thank you for watching Chucky. CUOTO
Thanks Tim, another great video and I totally agree with your opinion about politics and friendship.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!
If you're going port-to, you might want to drop the port side Yokis, right?
Ahh, they did. Good!
You made that look super easy, captain Tim!
CUOTO
Thank you for watching and supporting the channel Mellissa. CUOTO
We just went on a trip on the NCL Encore out of Seattle, and it was bunkered by the Mighty AJ.
Nice! That must have been a great cruise. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
@TimBatSea he was operating "heads and tails" even though he has a notch on the barge. They were using booms so I guess he had to stay outside.
New subscriber here. Awesome channel. Thank you for sharing what you do.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel John. CUOTO
Sounds like a cats steering. Subbed to the sailing channel, fair winds, Cap.
Thank you very very much for subscribing over there! I really appreciate it. CUOTO
Friendship has to be based on trust. I might be able to trust someone on the little things, when they're within my eyesight, but if I can't trust someone's loyalty to our community, I'll stick close to them for another reason.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Your talk about politics got me to subscribe. I hate the division we are experiencing and the fact that people, well a lot of people, listen to reply instead of listening to learn. Anyway, thanks for the voice of reason.
Thank you very much Roger and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Good description of walking, thanks.
Thank you for watching Greg. CUOTO
Just found your channel great content
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Thanks for taking us along and your political insight is well timed these days. Never seemed that important in the past. Will leave it at that
Thank you very much for watching Bob. CUOTO
Very smart you are and I agree with you. Respect of opposing views is very important to democracy! As Evelyn Beatrice Hall said and I paraphrase, “I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it!”
💯!!! 💪 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Tim well said
Thank you for watching Bill. CUOTO
Tim I'm from another country, and we're divided maybe even more than America. I couldn't agree more with you - it's stupid if you're willing to lose a friend because you want to convince him. Good luck.
Thank you very much for watching. I appreciate the way you think. CUOTO
I watched a twin screw try to come out off a dock in Lincolnville that was down one engine. He hit everything possible trying to get off the dock.
Thank you for watching John. It happens, especially at the boat ramp. CUOTO
👍✅ Good inteligente socio political discourse Tim, well done👏Oh and the docking/ship handling was OK too🤣
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Thx for the vid.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
😂мне надо спать..... завтра в рейс..... а я смотрю и смотрю👍
😂😂 That's fantastic. Sleep well. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
"Complaining"...... what good does it provide, little from my perspective. I feel certain w/ your discerning eye, you could write
volumes from each dock to dock trip of all the things you saw that were questionable. Experience gives you that critical eye
to see things none of us might notice? I'd want you as a teacher if I were seeking knowledge in becoming a Captain. Yep, I
could only hope for a good teacher w/ a good disposition. I learn about people here Mr. Tim, you're a great study/ Thanks.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
great relaxing videos to watch powerful machines move slowly.
CUOTO
My momma always told me, its possible to Disagree without being Disagreeable
😂😂😂😂 Thank you Forest. 😂 Thank you for watching Frank.
Thank you for watching. I think you are right! CUOTO
Politically I agree with you.
Checking your other site!
Bravo Zulu 🎉
Thank you very much for watching Sally. CUOTO
17:00 - If more people thought like this, we'd be so much better off as a country. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with someone. It's how you act on that disagreement that makes all the difference.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Just had to resubscribe…. Is that a word 😂😂
Yes it is! Thank you very very much! CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching Stephen. Great quote! CUOTO
I am still subscribed! Glad to see that…
I am glad too! Thank you very much. CUOTO
What does “see you on two” mean?
Thank you for watching. On the one or on the two are passing arrangements made between two ships. On one is short for a one whistle pass or port to port. On two is a two whistle pass meaning starboard to starboard pass. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Thanks Tim for your reply. I only own a pleasure craft license, in Canada. Subbed.
Marine radio channel two...(?)
@@gregobern6084 negative. It's a passing arrangement
In a civilized society political differences don't matter. But in a decaying disordered one where rule of law becomes political it does greatly. Neighbors will turn in neighbors, friends and family. Therein lies the danger for wanting to stay in touch. Look around, that is where we are right now.
Thank you for watching Tyler. CUOTO
Very cool!!!
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
I was familiar with Paul before I discovered your channel. I don’t recall you mentioning him before, I was hoping it wasn’t because you didn’t like him. Cool to see the HQ from the tug’s upper house.
😂😂😂😂 Paul and I go back a ways. He's a great guy and a fantastic tankerman. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Still subscribed, Tim; no algorithm issues here!
Outstanding! Thank you very much for watching and checking. CUOTO
Me thinks, Paul took the job because he knew he would have a chance to work with TimBatSea
😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Are there Foss tugs on the east coast ?
Thank you again for watching. But we do have only one rule. We try very hard to not "Directly" name tugs, companies or customers as it gets me in trouble with my employer. CUOTO
Tim just had a curious thought 🤔 Do they steam clean the tanks on the barges every so often to get rid of sludge & setiment?
Thank you for watching John. Usually barges are designated "clean oil" or "black oil". Going from clean to black does not require cleaning, but the other way does. The process is known as "Butterworthing". CUOTO
can you do the Mr Rogers voice when you philosophize? It would be most appropriate! 🤣
😂😂😂😂 Thank you for watching Teem. CUOTO
What cargo did you load / unload at the terminal (begin of the video)? Are you a bunker barge? Thank you.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Yes. We bring bunkers from the terminal to the ships. CUOTO
There a guy walking down the port side of the barge, a white shirt, short pants and no floatation work vest).
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
You’re going from New Jersey to Alaska is there anybody closer? Like on the West Coast
Thank you for watching Kristen. I don't understand what you are asking.
😂😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Doug. I am sure you are correct. CUOTO
the pusher has a deckhand in the bow with a radio in a lawn chair see him every day
Thank you again for watching. You are correct. But would you put all your faith in the lowest paid guy on the boat hoping he hasn't fallen asleep or worse? Mad respect to those guys. CUOTO
Am happy to see u back in nyc nj r u going to do any trips to Boston Tim
Thank you for watching Jesse. I am not sure. (We go where they send us) CUOTO
