What makes Oda's introduction of Mihawk at this stage in the manga so genius is that it lets you know how big the world is compared to what you've seen so far. Up to this point , you've seen Luffy beat every enemy he's faced so you think Luffy is really strong, if not invincible. Then you see Mihawk & you realize that there are monsters out there on a completely different level. Also, to this point, you've assumed that devil fruit eaters are the strongest people in the world, & then Mihawk shows up & annihilates an entire fleet with just his supreme skill with a sword & Oda lets you know that devil fruit powers are not the end all be all.
Few things you missed or weren't covered in the episode. 1. The Sword guy's full name is Dracule Mihawk. As the world's greatest swordsman, his nickname is Hawkeye Mihawk due to his hawk-like eyes. 2. Ussop's eye is so good that he could read the name of Baratie even before anybody else saw it and he read it when they were in the mist. 3. The guy, who got free food from Sanji and talked about losing 50 ships in Grand Line. He was a part of the ship destroyed by Mihawk. We can see the logo on his clothes. So basically, Mihawk sliced 50 ships like that.
@@markcruz359 No, Mihawk's nickname wasn't mentioned in live action episode, but it was mentioned in the anime episode. Characters in the anime mostly call him by his nickname. Also, to answer your question, Mihawk is a solo pirate and his boat is a coffin. In anime it is specifically shown, but in live action, we can see the coffin boat in episode 1 when Roger gave his speech and we see every pirate ship leaving.
Not really. The Don Krieg pirates were defeated and mostly destroyed in the Grand Line. *What remained* of them, which includes at least one ship, retreated to the East Blue, had an accidental encounter with Mihawk, woke him from his nap, and were devastated. Then, in the live action, only Gin remained. In the manga / anime, besides Gin, also Don Krieg, Pearl and a few more mooks survived that, and had to be taken out by Luffy and Sanji. Which, incidentally, makes Sanji feeding a starving Gin much more relevant than in the live action, because there was a risk that Gin would bring his whole crew to raid the Baratie, and Sanji helped him anyway. While in the live action, the only consequence was one more plate to wash.
Taz, the actor who portrays Sanji actually trained in kickboxing and as a chef so he could do as much of the action as possible. He trained by preparing lunch for his co-stars. Additionally he and the actor who played Zeff had worked together before playing father and son.
Spartan wouldn't have remembered Garp being Luffy's grandpa because that revelation is way too far in the anime. They just put Garp's (and Koby's) storylines now along with the crew's adventure to make the series have that contrast between the pirates and marines and their own respective good/bad sides.
not the biggest fan of that decision but i understand why they did it. but what i am unsatisfied with is, that no one in the crew recognized Garp the Hero, while in the manga/anime it was a big deal, since everyone knows him, and here nothing no reaction whatsoever.
@MoonlightShadowTek I mean. For one, devil fruits are also a legend around these parts, so the level of knowhow of the wider world isn't high along (just think of how many important characters have devil fruits in the world). For another, Zoro and Usopp have no reason to know. Zoro gives no shits, Usopp is a small village orphan who probably didnt go to school or anything. And Nami is aware of his standing, even if she didn't recognize him by sight.

Okay guys so just to be clear Garp(Luffy's grandpa) is ridiculously strong in the anime. Infact he's known as the monster of the marines due to his brute strength. And just like in the live action he has a habit of throwing cannonballs with his bare hands lol.
Interesting Bit for you, Naruto Fans. When Oda was getting ready to create Sanji, he was originally going to be called Naruto. Kishimoto, hearing this, was even willing to let Oda have the name and would've named Naruto something else. Only for Oda to be the one to change it.
The reason for the name Naruto instead of Sanji was because of his curly eyebrows in the anime. Since naruto is the Japanese name for the white thing with the pink swirl on it in authentic ramen in Japan. @awakeningbro1207. There were a few references to it. Well, he does appear in an early cover story which was also adapted, but he's not seen as significant and you won't pay much attention to him. Koby also doesn't appear in the East Blue arc after the events of the first episode! Probably the biggest change of the series as they needed to add more tension.
The cover story between Garp, Koby and Helmeppo starts in chapter 83 and we see Garp first in chapter 92. East Blue ends with chapter 100. We only learn about him being Luffy's granpa until chapter 431 though, yes.

What I love about Mihawks introduction this early into the story is that it comes to show the heights that Zoro (and Luffy) have to reach to achieve their dreams. Mihawk is so far ahead of Zoro at this point, that it's hard to put into words. If we put it in terms of sports... Zoro is a 4 year old that kicked a ball for the first time and liked it and Mihawk is the best player of the world ever. And even this is a bit of an understatement. Later when we find out Mihawks bounty (prior to cancelation), we realize why Oda chose to not reveal it... It would make every villain (except one or two) in the East Blue and Grand Line pale in comparison.

It's either seen or implied that everybody else has money on them to pay for their food (Nami bribes the host, I believe I recall Zoro offers to buy drinks, and we know that Ussop had an actual job until recently)
One little info about warlords they're inspire by real thing called Privateer, and the difference between Anime/Manga with LA their bounty not cancelled but froze, their bounty still exist
