I Loved Contra Force! The low FPS never bothered me. It was my first experience with the ability to chose between multiple characters. It is probably my most played Contra game.
Glad I’m not the only person who loved this game back in the day. The farming for weapon upgrades was definitely a nice change of pace. It also tied me over until I got Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis for Christmas along with the GB version of Alien Wars

While both contra Nes games are great, Super C is better in my opinion. Even though I like super c better, I do think the first one deserves to be on the nes classic more. The first one is still great in its own right, and had a way bigger impact than Super C.

Man, the music in the 2nd stage is one of the best of that era
I found out about this game a few years ago, and always wondered why it never got talked about much. In the PAL regions, I don't think we ever got this game. We had Contra 1-3 (rebranded as Probotector due to censorship at the time) but we never got Contra Force. Very interesting to learn more about it!

I discovered this title when I came across a copy and a store that mainly sold used VHS tapes bought from movie rental stores in the late 90s. It only cost a few dollars. When playing Contra Force, I immediately knew it was another Super Mario 2 USA situation.
I always preferred this game to legit Contra. It's ambitious in the amount of stuff it tries to do for a NES game (destructible environments, moving platforms, switchable characters and weapons) and the soundtrack absolutely rocks. Just think of the slowdown as bullet time. ARC HOUND ftw.
Yeah dude never beat legend of Zelda before, as an adult I work my @$$ off and don't have the time. Played through 3 times now and can't believe how awesome killing Gannon is! What a great walk through and best production value on all your videos! Man I wish you would do more videos!

I don't know what it is about your channel, but it brings out a sentiment in me that other gaming channels don't. Seeing the instruction booklets, the old footage and how you present the information - and possibly even your southern draw, takes me back. I wish nothing but success for your channel.
Loved that game. It had one of the best graphics in NES, at least from the games I had. I recently fired up batocera and was surprised how actually hard it is - it felt comparatively easy back in the day.
I believe “Gradius” is meant to be the English word “Gladius”, which is a type of sword. Gladius is pronounced “gla-dee-us”, so I tend to pronounce Gradius where the “grad” is pronounced the same way it is in “Graduation”. Love the video!

As far as I know the slowdowns were happening because the game really did push NES at its limits, and either devs didn't "push enough" because of the time&resources issue, or it is on fact a failed experiment when devs decided that they just cannot push the hardware that far and decided, instead of just scrapping, to make a cash grab. Either way, Contra 6 is a Chinese bottleg. There is no way that those people really did fiddled with a code and/or added hardware to the cartridge to make a game run smoother. Or did they? All the Chinese bootleggers usually did is hack games, remove copyrights, sell bootlegs. Sometimes they crappily ported stuff. The real effort is very rare coming from that front, although there is a good stuff like the 8bit port of SNES Aladdin. And I don't remember a smooth Contra 6 play either - slowdowns were there still. Maybe on an emulator it was better?
Back from trip , first video to watch : THIS ONE. Extra interesting for a Swede to watch because back in the day , the morality-patrole had control over which ”toys” were appropriate to allow for the children. Contra got the cold hand. But we found our way around by having friends or relatives in Denmark or Germany buy and send them. Great video !!!!

Honestly, I sort of think of it as Gradius but a platformer instead of a space shooter. It’s got the same pace, style of music, and power up system. It was made by the same company too. Definitely thinking that’s where the inspiration cane from.
I grew up with the nes, had Contra and Super C, had a subscription to Nintendo power, and this is the first I am hearing of Contra Force. Maybe it's because I switched to Sega in the 16 bit era and cancelled my nintento power subscription shortly before that but I still don't know how I have never heard of this game.
The Burns and smith thing gets weirder than you know. I first came across and played this game in 2006 while serving in the military. My last name...Burns..guy I worked with...smith. got a copy of this game and invited him over to give it a go as he was the first person to think me playing nes games was cool. Imagine our surprise when we booted up this game about the military and theres our names on the character select screen...minds....blown.
Funny thing, is that the key feature from CF went into Contra Hard Corps: 4 playable characters with different height and weapons. Slowdown makes the game more cinematic. I've played it without slowdown and it was very average. Even though it seemingly doesn't count as canon for the Japanese Contra story, Contra ReBirth "referenced" Contra Force by using one of its tracks (player select).
If memory serves, the developers eventually retconned Contra Force to be in the Contra World timeline, but set out as the first game in the timeline placed well before the events of Contra before the Triumvirate stole the alien artifact and started the Alien Wars, and was the origins of the team lead by Bill and Lance, and if I remember Burns was supposed somehow related to Bill after the Retcon, but it was only a Retcon to mask a terrible decision by Konami.
Well lets see. Arc Hound, Fox Hound. Hmmm Metal Gear? Metal Contra? Lol. Yeah I played this games a few times and I couldn't get into it. Great video, I love how you make your videos, very informative. Think I'll give this game a go this weekend. And I haven't beat any of the games I said I'd play like Jaws for NES. I can barely get time to truly sit down and play. I will this weekend. Game on bro!

Lmao i didn't have a clue about this... i remember playing it vividly as a kid, on one of those 10001 in 1 type cartridges with my knock off Famicom, really good times. The fact of having 4 distinct characters was my favorite feat of the game.
This was a very good review of this obscure cult classic. Yes, there are people who liked it. I remember I got this one and Mega Man 6 on the same xmas. I remember that I was kinda shocked there was a Contra I didn't heard of. I gave it a good try and I felt it was way off the series, I remeber I took it out, put in Mega Man 6 and it stayed in my console for several months. I didnt came back to Contra Force until much later in 1995 or 96 when I came home from college. I saw my old NES and decided to plug it and blow some steam. I grabbed Contra Force, wondering why I never played it, the frustratingly high challenge curve early on in the game helped me a lot, now having played harder games it seemed kinda natural. The game to me felt more like an alternate Metal Gear kind of game. I enjoyed it for several months. I feel so sad that I sold this and all my NES games back in the late 90's to Game Stop none of the less! You know I got ripped!
Wow, this is really informative. I always hated this game with a fiery passion for all the reasons you mentioned. It seemed like an LJN Contra game. If I would have known that it was just some other random okay game, I might have played past the first stage. Great video!
This is one game I would like to see a speed enhancement hack for. While the slowdown is not great, it's still playable IMO but less slowdown would definitely help. Despite not being Contra I still really like this game as it offers a good run and gun experience and the Gradius power system is really neat. I hope someone finds the Arc Hound beta one day because based on the screen shots, it looks like it would have been a better/different game.
I think Contra Force is a more honest rebranding than Super Mario Bros 2, Yo Noid!, Final Fantasy Legends, Final Fantasy Adventure, Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Tetris Attack... Because Contra Force carries at least half of the gameplay of Contra games, while none of the others I listed have any relation to their series except cosmetics.

I don't get the hate for this game. You get used to the slowdown really quick. This was one of the best NES games I've played and the stage where you switch planes was pulse-pounding!
Very rare... I actaully saw this game for 100$ in a retro game store. Its been there a while as i get new games at least every 2-3 months....but my question is. Should i pick it up or leave it.
Still very much love the game despite all its problems. And of course me playing in Russia, it was called "Contra 6" for some reason (Chinese bottleg). We had a good deal of conversations with my friend on what "3", "4" and "5" Contras could look like, as we thought they were definitely existing, of course.
Contra Force was my fav Contra game on the NES. It had alot of customization tools for the player to play with and was generally very fun to play. Heck i still play it from time to time, and never really touch the original game or Super C.

That's actually the intended way, since the katakana is グラディウス. Some in-game voice actor mispronounce it as Gray-Dius though.

Agreed. It's like they almost got there to make it a good game. I think just keeping it Arc Hound would have made it better.
You can use overclocking on nes emulators and run it at decent speed
The thing i hated most was the areas where it just slowed down which had nothing to do with your system, it's how the game was made

I don't get the hate for this game. You get used to the slowdown really quick. This was one of the best NES games I've played and the stage where you switch planes was pulse-pounding!

Very rare... I actaully saw this game for 100$ in a retro game store. Its been there a while as i get new games at least every 2-3 months....but my question is. Should i pick it up or leave it.

Contra Force is the best part of Contra series
I wish Konami hires Wayforward for a Contra 5.
Still very much love the game despite all its problems. And of course me playing in Russia, it was called "Contra 6" for some reason (Chinese bottleg). We had a good deal of conversations with my friend on what "3", "4" and "5" Contras could look like, as we thought they were definitely existing, of course.
Contra Force was my fav Contra game on the NES. It had alot of customization tools for the player to play with and was generally very fun to play. Heck i still play it from time to time, and never really touch the original game or Super C.
