    Check out the artist 'Antologie' on Spotify. They have 2 ambient style tracks like Deep Watch, millions of plays and very strangely... use the same font and style in their cover photo. Also like Deep Watch, they don't show up anywhere else on the internet. I think the two might be connected in this.

  • @zygma5161
    @zygma5161 7 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    What if it's a third party not affiliated with Spotify. They just commission artists and make lots of sister labels. Maybe this company has some connections to Spotify so they just get put automatically into a playlist.
    Just speculation, though.

    also apparently the reason why all the top pop artists produce long-as-hell albums is because they want to accumulate number of plays these albums get so that they can get on Billboard charts.

    still a little confused... how would Spotify gain anything out of supposedly creating fake artists and tracks?

    • @_arman_
      @_arman_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      My guess is that because Spotify has to pay artists royalties per play, it would then mean that heavily used playlists with fake artists end up cheaper for Spotify because if a certain % of the tracks are actually 'fake' artists that Spotify has created, then those would then be plays that Spotify doesn't have to pay for because theyre not going to be giving royalties to themselves

    • @ptrckcgn
      @ptrckcgn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      My theory is that this is the responsibility of just a few people in the Spotify company, as opposed to the company at large. Let's say you're a playlist curator, and you feel like doing some embezzling. You invent a fake artist, or hell, maybe even make the music yourself, and put it on a popular playlist. You get revenue, Spotify is none the wiser. Until now...

    Honestly, I think Deep Watch is a person who isn't serious about music who wanted to give it a shot. They put the two tracks up and were like, "Eh, this isn't worth my time," or "Music-making isn't really my thing." Seems like a simple and plausible explanation.
    Edit: Saved the comment before finishing the video. Whoops! In response to your final point, you're right that we can only guess what's going on, at least until someone comes forward. It's good to retain some healthy skepticism here. That said, I doubt anything nefarious is going on. I feel like Spotify has better things to do than make bland ambient music and plant it into playlists to save a penny a day.

It was surprising to see something like that in Top Charts. Titles made absolutely no sense and seemed randomly generated.

    I think it's weird but the most obvious non scummy solution is that someone is simply gaming the system by uploading two ambient tracks under an alias they created specifically for Spotify use and that is that, however I agree evidence is needed to put to bed the claims.

  • @daniel-nc8tf
    @daniel-nc8tf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My theory: if you look at the “fake artists” they all use a distrokid label to distribute the tracks. I think distrokid or someone who works there or maybe even 1 person with a distrokid account is mass producing really simple ambient/instrumental albums and then releasing them on spotify to rake in some easy money

    I was on Spotify 2 days ago and there was literally an artist who only had 2 songs and both songs were covers off of Jay-Z's new album. And you Can tell he re-created the instrumental because on his "Story of OJ" cover there was no vocal sample at all. And he literally just used Jay's lyrics and song and covered it and credited the song as his.

    A lot of discount stores and places that don't want to pay for services with named artists use companies that crank out royalty free/cheap license albums of sound-a-likes. A lot of the time the production companies make up the names to give it a bit of flavour and perceived value (instead of a roll call of session musicians) could this be the case?
    Could be that, or that Spotify are up to something shady

    One of those fake artists showed up in my release radar playlist a couple weeks back. The band name is Heart and they have one album titled Sweat and Effort. It has 11 songs ranging from 1:52-1:56 in time and they're all just variations of the same song. A lot of them have these weird grammatically incorrect titles like "Looking Her Eyes" and "Nobody See You" as if they were made by someone who doesn't fully understand English. It says that its credited to Miriam Perez but i cant find virtually anything about this person or the album. Its very strange and I'm super curious as to how this album came to exist and who created it and for what purpose. I'm sure it has something to do with making quick easy money but the mystery of it is still intriguing to me

    My guess is that Spotify has harvested some artists from Pandora, or CD Baby, etc. Not sure of their current status, but Pandora used to accept submissions from independent artists, and approve them on a case by case basis. My music is on there, and I am a relatively unknown artist with no label or representation.

    The fact that they weren't willing to offer any sort of explanation for the extremely strange circumstances reported upon, and instead just gave a cold answer, effectively saying nothing more than "No, we don't do that" isn't very convincing, and is actually in my opinion another hint that they do do this, but don't want to talk about it. But you never really know. And like you said, not that it really matters at the end of the day or should be illegal or anything.

    They didn't really explained anything in their statement. We still have a "band" or "project" which exists pretty much only on Spotify playlist, and nowhere else on the internet.
    Oh and btw. guys - check on Spotify artists related to Deep Watch. There's a shitload of such anonymous projects playing just the same type of vague ambient muzak, and they have a ton, a ton of listens every freakin' month. That's incredible. Most artists would love to get that amount of listens on Spotify. Hell...some of very good artists cannot reach half that number a month. Maybe it's a case similar to "white noise sounds" on TH-cam, which has millions of listens, because people play it to relax or sleep.
