I saw Adam with Norah two times. I was really impressed with his playing which is something I don’t say often. It probably sounds stupid but I can usually tell the difference between a good musician and a good human. Adam is both and so is Norah. Thanks Otis.

I sat next to Norah Jones Grandmother on Norah’s first tour in Nashville. Grandma was telling me they were excited to be getting out of a van an into their new bus. I listened to stories and shared choc covered raisins with Grandma. Norah was wonderful and her Band was raw being pushed by the crowd to fly high. A Night I will never forget , thanks Grandma!

Genuine innovator as a musician and a damn fine human. Thanks Otis!

Adam Levy is as kind and heartfelt in this interview as his playing would indicate. I fully understand why Dave Mathews would want to hang with him. As a fan, the ability to hang with artists after the show is a rare and magical gift. Much heartfelt condolences for the loss of his wife. His stories here made me admire Norah and the members of her band even more.

I believe this is the man I saw with his band at the Livery in Benton Harbor MI and I never forgot him even though it was a long time ago. He was plugged at the time as Norah's guitar player. He is one of the very most amazing guitar players I've ever heard. He played some stuff that sounded Middle Eastern and he was just so great. I've often thought about and remembered that show. Amazing!

I remember meeting Adam & Norah after a great gig in Paris, the first time they were in Europe. It was a small jazz club, and I remember somebody in the band, maybe Adam, maybe Norah, said: it won't get bigger than this. Well, were they wrong. I met the band later in Montreal and things had changed indeed - it was right after the Prince concert Adam mentions. And it's true, it was fun talking with Adam!

Ha I met her at a little bar in Deep Ellum Dallas before she went to New York. In my mind she was already a star then. I was the only one there so we talked. Noah is one of the more celebrated graduates of North Texas State University (now, North Central University) and absolutely took the World by storm with "Don't Know Why." Jesse Harris wrote that and "One Floor Down," and a number of other wonderful songs. NTSU was in Denton, and not Dallas, but that doesn't matter. She is wonderful.

    • @banjopops67
      @banjopops67 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Although he does say she's from Dallas, at 8:23 he states "she went to North Texas, in Denton..."
Ok he left out the "U", but yeah,Norah went to UNT. I've never heard of "North Central University" in Texas. There is a North Central community college, and if you show me she went there, I'll admit my mistake.
You are correct that the university she went to was once called North Texas State, but I'm pretty sure it became UNT in the late '80's, and she wasn't there til the late '90's. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyway, UNT claims her as their alumni.

What a surreal gig to go thru that arch from club to Matthews, Willie to headliner with Norah Jones..She really made Jazz accessible for the average consumer much in the same way Chet Baker or Sergio Mendes did back in the day. I don't know if you knew about her duet album with Billy Armstrong but it's really good covering Everly Brothers post Plant / Kraus first project. I'm thinking that somebody was seeing if they could get that two genres collide thing like Plant/Kraus but it didn't get as big at all. It's still good.

  • @davidpahlka6301
    @davidpahlka6301 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nora Jones' music has a special effect upon me.
Since I was in my early 20's I would start my morning off easy with country, folk or
mild blues, then by midday popular rock 'n' roll and ending with the more exciting stuff.
The days I did, my performance at work would be better, I could handle any crisis
which came my way without a disaster.
Nora does that. On one CD she did an old Hank Williams standard, "Cold, Cold, Heart"
but in a bluesy-jazz way. I went to our bar and ran into a red-necked Texan who talked
all the time about how his ex screwed him over. I played her cover just to see how he'd
react. I half expected him to say "That isn't as good as Hank!" but he didn't. I asked him
how he liked it and he said "That was nice, very nice."
Anyone can play to an audience of willing fans familiar with your music but to turn
around a skeptical audience is the true test.
Just for laughs I love playing the first CD she did with "The Little Willies" and you can
see another side of her with the song "Lou Reed". For you city slickers, it's impossible
    to tip a cow.
A great artist should have a small ego and wishes the band and the audience be
as one. Your interview didn't disappoint, she is like that 100%.

Really great interview and perspective.. there’s something to be said about refreshing your band and music… it has nothing to do with loyalty.. it can be a hard pill for a loyal sideman to take, feeling they’ve dedicated a large portion of their life to supporting someone’s success. But, as an artist (or any kind of musician, really) there comes a time when change is healthy and it may be difficult to see in the moment but a truly dedicated artist or musician must be fed and they need new muses and inspiration. The funnest part of being in a touring act is the ride to something greater than imagined and it may only come along once or twice in a career but, it’s always the most fun… the down side is when it turns into work and becomes less fun and less stimulating.

@@bamgrok I also think this is probably true. When you get right down to it she is under-rated because she rejected the kind of media push she may have got were she more amenable to that sort of thing. On the flipside, Norah rejected being the media darling she easily "could" have been, for having a normal live and retaining her own credibility. So we must accept that despite being a huge name in music, having millions of fans, and the respect and admiration of her peers, she's under-rated. But, we must also accept why.
It's fine though. It may take a while but eventually she'll reach everyone. [We just got to get the word out]

The fact that she had them write songs for the second album tells me everything i need to know about Nora Jones

Just tells me she is raising a family, its really hard to have a touring career , kids, husband. and write songs, get them to the point you can go into the studio and record...

What I meant was that to give band members song writing credits is an awesome gesture, that's royalties if it hits

Long time subscriber of Adam’s. Just the best. And Otis, one of the best interviews ever. Quite a story, or stories really. You know your core community clearly. This is the stuff we crave. Music!

What a nice, humble man. He handled that success well. His experiences with Nora also make me respect her all the more.

Thank you for the great interview, Otis - so nice to get to know Adam.
I was in the photo pit for Norah’s 2010 Austin City Limits Festival. When the crowd was chanting “Norah!, Norah!, Norah!,” I’ll admit to pretending like they were chanting for this Nora. 😊
