I have the triplex due to hiking alone (with my dog) and saving every ounce possible while having lots of space… I’ve used this tent in below freezing temps, and torrential rain with wind gusts up to 40 mph and this tent is the absolute best. I love it so much. It was a big investment but totally worth it to me knowing how well it performs and holds up during bad weather.
I'd love to have a triplex for those times I'm feeling like some more room!

Have you used it in hail? I'm on the fence on a DCF x-mid vs silpoly because of this. I'm not camping in the winter. I'm worried about "surprise" hail
@@things_are_iffy I mean no… but I’m not sure any ultra lite tent would fair well in hail 🤷🏼♀️
I’m gonna hold out for a dyneema X-Mid 2 for my first dyneema tent. I am obsessed with my silpoly X-mid 2 I can only imagine how awesome an ultra ultralight version would be.

I'm also thinking of buying the DCF X-mid. Are you worried about hail ripping your tent? That's what have me on the fence
Justin, I am 6'5" tall and have used an Altaplex for about 50 nights on the PCT (maybe I need to say in the USA based on your hat). Anyway, I fit without touching my head or feet on the walls (neolight air pad and Enlightened Equipment quilt). I have not had any condensation issues, but that is not surprising given that I have used it on the PCT. One advantage over some tents that I have seen is that if there is rain I can lay out the tent, toss my stuff into the tent, and then set it up and climb in. I had a tent before with a tent/fly system and that did result in some rain into the the tent before I could get the fly over it (on the AT), but that really is a minor issue. Long comment, but the bottom line is I think this tent works and is worth it for the weight savings.
My Duplex is hands down my favorite piece of gear since I got it in 2016. I would love to see you review the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Ultamid, which is one of the few truly ultralight tents that can be used in all 4 seasons.
I tried to get my hands on one, but with the dyneema shortage right now, it's tough!
My Tarptent NOTCH Li (Dyneema) solo tent also cost $600. a few years ago. I've modded it by adding 4 stake loops around the tent fly hem using Tenacious Tape circles "sandwiched" around the hem edge resulting in a semi-circle reinforcement on each side to the hem. Also I dyed the inner tent with "Parrot Green" RIT DYEMORE synthetic dye for more shade and privacy.
My NOTCH Li is a DOUBLE WALL which I love. It can be used in a freak snowfall with confidence IF properly guyed out nd staked down. Ventilation is very good with low vents at each end and two to[p vents creating good convective air flow the is not "breezy". Plus the NOTCH Li has more room than the AltaPlex. And I ned only 4 stakes (6 for max security).
The construction quality of Tarptent Dyneema tents is unmatched!
I'm 6'3" and without the addition of the trekking pole cup pull outs I'd be touching the side walls. Glad they offer that accessory as a solution. That being said I love mine and the weight savings are a game changer. The only other tent I'd consider is the Dynema Tarp Tent Double Rainbow

Would love to own one. Would hate to pay for it.
For me I am just not hiking enough, nor do I have it in my budget, to justify buying a DCF tent just yet. More often than not I am going to be scheduling my trips around decent weather. The tent is primarily there to protect me from the hellish mosquitos here in the warmer months.

I've been using my Duplex for almost 2 years now, and it has made me hate all other tents I've ever used.
The Lunar solo a little heavier ,more room inside and Silpoly.

Lots of comparisons in the comment section of the Altaplex with tents that require 2 trekking poles. Not the same. Many people, me included, only use one trekking pole. So those other tents are a no go.
I like to only use one trekking pole for my tent as well!
More good info Justin, You should look a the history of Six Moon Designs, since this is the same design as the Lunar Solo, which I believe they were pretty far ahead w not only the tent design but also using DCF materials, same goes for the running vest style shoulder straps backpack. I’ll be curious re what tents come from the new Ultra/Ecopak, all reports are saying it’s a bit more expensive but hopefully that will change.
Also, just a suggestion, nothing personal, but might help to mention if the expensive gear was given to you for testing or that you bought it w own money, leaves less room for some of the critics in here..imo..Eitherway, Doesn’t effect me, since I know you’ve always put gear to the test which is what helps the most..thanks man👍🏻
Hey Lance, I include information about how I obtained every piece of gear in the video description as well as a link to my disclosure statement with information about my approach to reviews and ethics. The critics have luckily been few and far between on that front, so hopefully that stays! Dan Durston has weighed in a bit on Ultra for tents and I think I gathered he doesn't think it's going to really apply there. He's been really high on lower denier poly fabrics coming out since 20d is currently the lowest mass produced one and he thinks there are good tent applications for 10d and 15d.
Obvious but Duplex = 4oz heavier twice the space! Also would need 2 trekking poles or carbon tent pole they sell.
Four feet in width is not my idea of a tent for a two person tent, five feet is. With a floor, it leaves no option for lower weight or cost or user concern for damage to the floor and user floor preference(s). I'll stick with my DIY 4.7 ounce Dyneema floorless tent, 4.8 ft X 9 ft X3.5 ft high, $225 all up cost for materials.
So…if you pay yourself $15/hr for making your DIY tent…remember that your time is worth something. Quite a bit really.

What you failed to note is the significant cost savings, the ability to define one’s personal dimensions and detailed preferences, create it and gain the valuable experience in doing so.

@@ryankuhn926 You'll love it! I had the sil/nylon version ( with mesh interior) for a few years and really liked it, then bought the DCF fly by itself from TT and use the nylon floor w/ the Li fly. I like the extra durability of the nylon floor and the weight difference is pretty negligible from the DCF floor. It's a really versatile shelter. I like the ability to set it up fly only in winter time or inner & fly for a light weight 3 season double wall DCF pod! I would like to pick up the solid inner from TT...just to have options. I also think it's (solid inner) lighter than the all mesh version....mind blown! You'll like the Notch Li if ur under 6'.

Got one as well but only used it three nights. Perfect one man shelter, not as small as I thought it would be (not saying it’s big) and awesome with two vestibules. Feels really stable and I like all the features.
A little bit prone to condensation but mostly because there was no wind on any of the nights so no air moving through it.
That's $600+ US... Add in some shipping fees, customs and you're talking $1000+ in Canada. Not sure about Europe etc.
At 6'3" most 1 person tents just don't fit so I guess I have no choice but to buy one...
Saw it in a store here in Europe it was 1070€ that’s ~1200$
I'm 6'4" (1.93m) tall and have chosen the Marmot Super Alloy 2P tent instead. The price here in EU for it, the size of the bathtub floor and it only being a single wall tent made me look at other lightweight choices.
Not cheap, that's for sure. Hopefully the X-Mid production stabilize in 2022 and that becomes an option you taller folks can get their hands on!
You might also want to check out the new DupleXL, a longer version of the Duplex that is supposed to be good for up to 7ft. The bathtub floor is 6” longer than the standard Duplex or the Altiplex. I picked up one for my AT through hike starting in Feb. I was contemplating taking my Durston X-Mid 1P but felt having the additional space inside the tent was more useful than the smaller living space in the 1P even with its huge vestibules. It’s also about 9 oz lighter. Neither are as big as my X-Mid 2P though, which is a proper 2 man tent.
Not worth it considering the X-Mid 2p pro costs the same =)
2 trekking poles vs 1 trekking pole though.
@@ChopperChad Get a aftermarket support pole if you don't carry two poles. Plenty out there that only weigh an oz or 2.

Too small to smoke my blunt comfortably.
Not enough space or value for that price imo. Lots of people reporting dyneema failing after a few seasons. Shouldn't recommend anything u haven't tested for a long period.
Many many people use dyneema shelters for 1 or more of the big long trails in the US (CDT, AT, PCT), which ends up being hundreds of nights using the tent. I have over 50 nights in the tent so far and it look brand new. For tents, dyneema is a great fabric. For pieces of gear that see more abrasion, like packs and stuff sacks, they may wear out faster than some other fabrics.

Another negative of Dyneema is the unchangeable white color.

@@rgmALC This means it’s not 100% Dyneema but mixed with other materials.
@@dan.b So you mean UHMWPE, because that’s the “raw form” of DCF. DCF is made up of a few materials, thus why it’s called Dyneema COMPOSITE Fabric. UHMWPE I believe is white (could be wrong), but the Altaplex is a dyneema composite tent that comes in 6 colors.
Dyneema composite fabric is the more correct term as you wouldn't get a great tent if making it out of pure dyneema fibers. For tents, the dyneema fibers are laminated with a non-woven polyester film and then pressed together under high pressure.
Worst tent IV seen 4 the money 🤨 can sleep under the stars in sleeping bag cheaper 👍

I find this review useless. You don't even say how tall you are, so "I still have lots of room" has no information.
By the time you hammer 8 stakes into hard ground, you can probably set up 8 freestanding tents... Why would you be able to set it up faster?
The tie backs on the doors are well put together? That is technology from the 1970ies. Show me how you fumble those knobs through those loops from the inside with one hand quickly! I have the same and they suck!
Wiping condensation off is easier? WTF!
