so strange how at the end of his career he finally let loose with his forehand and ATTACKED. i remember even when it happened, after he announced his retirement it was like he let go of all the baggage that held him back for years and just played aggressive tennis. not coincidentally he started having good results again after years of decline. but at that point his body let him down and he couldn't sustain that level for two weeks anymore. you can see his aggressive forehands in this clip - something that basically didn't exist between 2006-2012.
Thanks for this perspective. It shows that above a certain physical level it is just too much - and while someone can be able to get into that 110% mode for some time, it will wreck your body.

I remember watching this match, I followed Roddick religiously from 2005 until he retired and this was the first time I saw him beat Federer, I was so happy that day, '06 US Open Final still stings, '09 Wimby Final still stings, so glad Andy could finally beat Federer here.

Federer was 21-3 against him. Just totally dominated the h2h even though some of Rogers wins were really close, like Wimbledon 2009, ATP finals 2006 where Federer saved match points, Wimbledon 2004, Basel 2001 (Federer won 7-5 in a final set breaker). Roddick just suffered so much heartache against him, over and over again. But Miami was really kind to him. 2 titles there, and 2 of his 3 wins vs Roger were in Miami. Plus a win over prime Rafa in his 2010 title run. And after all the heartache, Roddick got the win in his last ever match against Roger.
The match where Roddick FINALLY figured out his tell when returning 2nd serves. Shame he couldn't have played like this during Fed's prime. Roddick always had it in him-everyone knows about '09, but the '04 Wimby final was a lot closer than anyone remembers. Roddick could definitely have won that one too.

Yeah federer keeps his eyes on he returner a little longer as he is tossing the ball so he can see if the returner moves. I think it was a coach or someone who knew federer who later told RODDICK about it
I remember this. It was like 2002-2005 A-Rod in full form again, so awesome, but at this point in his career his body wouldn't have been able to sustain that type of play in tourneys regularly.
If only Roddick cut down on the topspin with the forehand and hit it more flat he would've had a forehand like Del Potro. Atleast he had the power for it.

Just going for topspin on fh/bh wasn't good enough either as well since hard courts started becoming molasses (remember Nadal had the same issues on hardcourts as well but he managed to adapt). Unfortunately for Roddick, he was guided wrongly in how to adapt and change his game. Took him until 2009 to do it and that was little too late for him.

Whoever told Roddick to change his game to be a low risk baseline grinder with a big serve had the right read on the direction the game was taking...but failed to consider that Roddick was already a fully developed player and couldn't just suddenly start playing a game that played to all of his biggest weaknesses.

@Mike Cranston Federer actually lost to Haas in the 2002 Australian Open. And in 2009 he almost lost to both Haas and Roddick in the RG and Wimbledon respectively but was able to make comebacks in those matches. Only one of the three who never came even close to beat Federer in GS is Hewitt.

Only when Brad Gilbert both told them to do just a little more with it that they finally won through the major tournaments. This match is a perfect example to show how prime Federer would have annihilated prime Djokovic. Roddick was not a beast here, he probably played worse than during 05-06 here but still won, this reflects more on Federer's performance decline
To be honest, during his Golden Era (mid-naughties), nobody was good enough to hit good passing shots and Federer was ridiculously good in his reactions and racket head controls, so rubbish approach (not *that* rubbish really...) didn't really hurt him. It was really Nadal and Djokovic who helped Federer improve his game. Arguably the Federer now is the best version, but old age caught up to him. Had he switched his racket sooner there might have been a different story post-2012.

Funny story about their "rivalry" - apparently pretty early on, Federer picked up on a tell Roddick had and exploited it for 12 years before a mutual friend spilled the beans and told Roddick. This was the last match they played after Roddick learned about the tell and how Fed was exploiting it, and stopped doing it. Tells can create huge imbalances in sports or anything competitive. Agassi similarly had picked up on a Boris Becker tell that actually let Agassi know where Becker was serving to. Prior to that Becker always crushed Agassi, and after that Agassi crushed Becker.
I disagree, I don’t think he could have sustained playing that aggressive style of tennis for a whole 2 weeks. His more passive style got him deeper in slams but winning them is a different question

I don't think mental strength was the issue for Roddick. I think for most players the problem is that Federer was just to dam good especially on hard and grass court. If not for Federer Roddick probably would have won at least another slam or two..

This match is a perfect example to show how prime Federer would have annihilated prime Djokovic. Roddick was not a beast here, he probably played worse than during 05-06 here but still won, this reflects more on Federer's performance decline

To be honest, during his Golden Era (mid-naughties), nobody was good enough to hit good passing shots and Federer was ridiculously good in his reactions and racket head controls, so rubbish approach (not *that* rubbish really...) didn't really hurt him. It was really Nadal and Djokovic who helped Federer improve his game. Arguably the Federer now is the best version, but old age caught up to him. Had he switched his racket sooner there might have been a different story post-2012.
leiya107 You can say that for all of them though. If Nadal served and hit like this back in 2008 with his insane speed he would be literally unstoppable. The Big 3 keep finding ways to evolve and stay on top

@@dewman7477 Honestly Federer 14-17 are not so much different. In 2015-2016 he wins Vs everybody including Murray but Djokovic was too good. In 2017 Djokovic got elbow injuries and Fed capitalised

Funny story about their "rivalry" - apparently pretty early on, Federer picked up on a tell Roddick had and exploited it for 12 years before a mutual friend spilled the beans and told Roddick. This was the last match they played after Roddick learned about the tell and how Fed was exploiting it, and stopped doing it. Tells can create huge imbalances in sports or anything competitive. Agassi similarly had picked up on a Boris Becker tell that actually let Agassi know where Becker was serving to. Prior to that Becker always crushed Agassi, and after that Agassi crushed Becker.
Records aside, he sure was an entertainer...

Roddick should have played more like this; would of had more grand slams.
I disagree, I don’t think he could have sustained playing that aggressive style of tennis for a whole 2 weeks. His more passive style got him deeper in slams but winning them is a different question

In tennis there are many commentators which are biased towards federer..
And now they eat their own words and have to suck it, that Federer's records will soon be broken in just some more years and he is never going to be the GOAT statistically speaking. He still has a lot of fans and followers though but that's a non-factor in the GOAT debate.

Roddick had the game to beat Federer consistently and win majors on a regular basis unfortunately he didn't have the mental strength...
I don't think mental strength was the issue for Roddick. I think for most players the problem is that Federer was just to dam good especially on hard and grass court. If not for Federer Roddick probably would have won at least another slam or two..
Ricardo Feitosa roddick gave federer some good grand slam matches. If roger is just that damn good, he wouldnt lose at all. Every player is capable of losing. Proven time and time again
