    My brother uses bales of Barley straw to help clean his ponds, here is what the interweb says. Barley straw has been a traditional treatment against blanketweed for hundreds of years. ... Barley Straw is a 100% natural product which, when added to your pond, will help to produce crystal clear water. Once the straw bales are wet, a natural process starts which combats algae growth.

      We get netted barley straw for our pond each year. It really works. Combined with grass carp. They must not be near any natural water sources. With the flooding you get they are probably illegal.

    • @belindasandey7932
      @belindasandey7932 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BlondeWisdom This method has been used for 100 of years they didn't have filters back then. Barley straw requires oxygen to begin the process of decomposition, the barley is tied in a way that it floats on the top of the water surface rather than below as this will allow it to aerate. It can be used all year round but works best in warm temperatures.

      I thought they had an aerator at one point (wind powered?). I guess it got clogged or died. They need something that is solar or wind powered as I don't think they have power out there. But in my experience, finding powerful enough fountains that run off solar is difficult.

    This is hilarious to see, but a losing battle. How about getting some rope and pool noodles. Thread the rope thru the middle of the pool noodles and make it long enough to reach across both sides and walk toward the other side. The pool noodles will float and skim across the top of the water bringing the muk to the other side without catching the minnows. Kind of like a barrier on top of the water that will catch the muk. I would try to do a small part to see if it works.

    Jami, you had it right. Get a squeegee and pull it towards shore as slow as possible without breaking the plane of the water. You only skim what’s ON TOP of the water. Once you break the meniscus of the water (the top surface of the water) where the algae is growing , you are too deep. Then get it near the shore and used an extremely fine net to slowly and lightly scoop out the top layer. The guys were moving wayyyyyyyy too fast and breaking the two layers apart. Taking only that top layer above the water, or as close to the alge level that you can will also keep you from catching the baby fish. They were wayyyyyyy too deep. It’s called skimming for a reason. 😎 🌺🌸

    Good morning Jami, Lester and Jake. I don't know anything about ponds or dugouts. On the farm we had the dugout stocked with trout and fished them out before winter as it wasn't deep enough and it gets too cold for them to survive. Some of the ideas in the comments sound helpful. I was wondering if the aerator was still working ? The leaf blower Jake was using may have worked if it was bit more horsepower to it. Lester blowing out the flip flop was funny and trying to walk with it on wasn't happening. Have a good day all.

    Ya'll are so interesting & amazing. And love a challenge. You recognize a problem. Make a decision. Go into action and search for a solution. Ya'll are are great teachers whether you realize it or not. Healthy thinking. Good example of problem solving & not giving up when stumped or wrong. 👍 Many years ago I was fortunate to have a home 17 yrs overlooking a beautiful pond. It had ducks, fish & more. The pond had 3 water fountains circulating the water. Fountains are costly & each site is unique to its construction. Not an option ISS. But it too would form that "muck". The gardeners &/ or pond maintenance would put on waders boots on and use a long pole skimmer, like used for swimming pool. They stayed along the water edge scooped up the muck & when full, swing it over to the bank to knock it out till clean. And repeat the process all around the entire perimeter of the pond. Usually 3-4 persons.
    A note of concern for the guys & their man-parts. I recall hearing somewhere & sometime ago. A lifetime away. An "ameba" that enters into a man's parts, also nostrils of any gender or age and can wreak havoc on your health and well being. I hope it's a myth and I'm wrong. But will ya'll research it, please? 🙏
    In the meantime, thank you for sharing your life with us. And always inviting us in❣The visits with ya'll are fulfilling. 👍

    It would have been better to have dug the pond much deeper.. as the water temp will go very high in summer.. it’s very very shallow…the pond is also stagnating… so water quality for the animals to drink wouldn’t be ideal… a good biological balance is needed.. put bales of barley straw in it.. or get a large pump to keep water circulating.. a agricultural pump..plant aquatic plants as well if possible that will help.. a inline UV clarifier attached to a water pump would help but means electricity needs to be run out there… I feel a lot of the problem is it being to shallow. I have had ponds and this last 10 years a dam as well and plants helped but depth is really important. Being that shallow on alot of the pond isn’t good for the fish either.. temps are just so hot… if there is anyway you can get good water circulation will help and I’d try many bales of barley straw.. it will take 6 months or so to break down and decompose… but will help a lot to clear and filter your water… also Introduce water Lillie’s.. the goats won’t go in the water to eat them, once they grow a lot it will help shade the pond.. your pond is experiencing a massive algae bloom…just way to much sunlight…which is not good for its eco system..the oxygen level will be low as well because of that algae… you need to aerate the pond a lot if you use barley straw as it needs lots of oxygen to help the process and condition the straw so it helps with decomposing… I think you need to look at a long term fix for this.. and I think it’s important to have a lot of plants, moving water and aeration.. none of what I have said is meant to be critical in anyway.. I’m just trying to offer suggestions.. I live in Australia and I know these methods have helped in my ponds.. it took 5 years for my dam to have a perfect biological balance… plants helped a lot… lots of love to you all and thank you for all you do, I adore you all and watch you every morning and night.. I love your pond and really want to see it become biologically successful for you.. 💕💕 I don’t think the additives you use are a long term solution. I think flowing water and massive planting would help over the long term and maybe in summer when it dries out a lot.. dig deeper 💕

    I like Jamie's idea of using pool skimmers! Also, I remember when you put up the windmill to help with water circulation, perhaps a stronger or additional circulation pump is needed.🤷‍♀️

    Is there weeds in your pond yet? You might need plants to balance your nitrates in your pond. And maybe Floating plants, such as lilies and lotus to shade and reduce direct sunlight in the pond to control the growth of algae. And add submerged plants that release oxygen to the water. Maybe get some hip waders and collect some of these plants at neighboring ponds to transfer to your pond. Or maybe one of your local greenhouses has some... I know some of the greenhouses here have nice water lilies they sell. Good luck and hope you find a solution!

    I wish I could like John Rodriguez Jr.'s suggestion over and over again. His idea is a small version of how large oil slicks are cleaned without harming "the wiggles." I first learned of this pool noodles and rope method (only on a larger scale) when I was a newspaper journalist living on the coast of Louisiana and writing a story based on research done working with Louisiana coastal marine biologists. Learned a LOT!

    Hey Jami…I have seen a few comments say a water fountain could help preventing algae build up..I have seen on a different channel called Pet Goose George that he has a small water fountain in his lagoon as he calls it to help and it seems to be doing a great job as well as the natural treatments he uses too

    A little USA company called Lake Mat makes a pretty inexpensive muck mat that gives you a firm area where the kids could play and you don't sink into a mucky pond bottom.

    Not all red algae is harmful. If yours was you would have dead fish. You ought to put in an aerator or fountain, it will help push anything to the sides to allow raking. The type of algae you have is what the little fish eat. An aerator makes the water bubble up and keep oxygen in the water and keep it from stinking as well as stagnant water stinks. They have solar water fountains, it will aerate and help move the algae to the side and keep the area of the eater open. You could also look into putting barley hay, it help control algae. The blowing was brilliant idea but long term try fountain. We put barley hay into our ponds. The red algae that is deadly is would be killing everything. The type you have can turn red, and that is natural and normal. It’s not the same as the killer algae. Is grass carp legal where you are, because they eat herbs, algae etc. you can also get liquid barley for large ponds and it is safe! It doesn’t kill it but will prevent further growth,

    Potassium permanganate, KM NO3 will kill algae. I used to use it in my big koi pond. It didn’t harm fish but you need to use the right amount because dead algae can cause problems too.

    Great idea… I would take 2 2x4s on each side one on Jakes side and one on yours, so you can hold it tight on the bottom and top, staple it on the wood and tool it once or twice and staple again. This way you can skim instead of going deeper. Those babies are adorable I hope that the webbed feathered babies don’t eat them all!

    Do it like they do oil spills. Attach that cloth to several pool noodles tied together long ways (put rope through the noodles) attach the cloth. (You'll have to cut it so it hangs down a few inches and you may want to put some fishing weights to keep it down a bit. Make it as wide as the pond. Then just walk from one end to the other. Easy peasy.

    Polypropylene rope floats .If you use large diameter polypro rope and drag it across the water it will collect the scum like an oil spill boom.For additional flotation you could run the rope through pool noodles.

    There are different types of water plants that filter out all the yuck and scum. They use them for natural swimming pools. They do a great job. Good luck..you all are so inventive. I love it! ( Image result for plants that filter algae from ponds
    Floating plants, such as lilies and lotus, provide shade and reduce direct sunlight in the pond to control the growth of algae. Add submerged plants that release oxygen to the water, such as anacharis, hornwort and parrot's feather.)

  • @erikaroy2549
    @erikaroy2549 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if this would work but you could try using fertilizer for the pond. We, aquarium enthusiasts, use fertilizer to combat some of the algae issues we get in our tanks. Mind you I still have a ton of red algae. D'oh! You are getting the algae from the amount of sunlight that your pond gets which isn't something that you can do anything about. There must be some way to get rid of the algae without hurting the fish.

    We had a lake in Vancouver that full of that stuff that swims on the water, algy and what not. The staff that worked for the Vancouver parks board said, that there were people at the lake, that tried to fish with corn and then dumped the corn into the lake and that is why the lake got that way. It was not a big lake. Now, I was just wondering , do you feed corn to the animals close to the lake?

  • @jasonperry2555
    @jasonperry2555 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Circulation, filtration and aeration are how you clean that pond up. There are several you tube videos for home made filter set ups using plastic barrels or the liquid pallet cubes. You have little to no circulation on your ponds and too many nutrients from your critters going in the ponds.
