I heard about this and it definitely looks tasty, just was waiting for it to get out of beta before trying. Looks much more polished since I have seen it last. Right now, i'm happy with i3wm.
This seems to be an efficient tilling wm that a 'standard' pc user could use. Pretty and straightforward. Plus using it probably helps fighting Alzeimer's with all those keybindings! Let's hope that this project won't vanish in a few months/years like so many potentially good projects have. When the wm is in its final version, will it be available for other distributions?
@@PaperBenni Strangely a few days ago, I have set up Xfce, on my main machine, with the same 'spirit' in mind - but it is Xfce, so... not so efficient. I probably give Instant Os a try when I have time. Congrats on your work!
You could probably skim through the screencasts to figure out some of the things that are going on. For example, instantwm/dwm use a different window management paradigm than i3-windows are organised into the "primary" area and the "secondary" area in a list called the "tab stack". So a new window is put at the top of the tab stack, into the primary area, which is the left side in the default layout. Other windows, which are lower in the tab stack, are then stuffed together in the "secondary" area, which is the right side of the default layout. In instantOS Super+Ctrl+J/K moves windows up and down the tab stack, and Super+Shift+Enter moves a window directly to the top of the tab stack (i.e. the primary area). I've been test driving it for a while and I recently dual booted it with my Windows install, since college is almost over Glad you reviewed it! :D Edit: replaced master/slave with primary/secondary

Coming up on two weeks since your review was posted and, since you closed saying you were going to hang on to InstantOS for awhile (high enough praise from you, right there!), I'm anxious to know what your current thoughts are about this distro.
Genuinely very impressed with it. As soon as it leaves beta I think it might have earned itself a permanent home on one of my SSDs. Ran into the minor issue here and there which you would expect from a beta release but nothing that can't be ironed out when it reaches maturity. Overall I think it's a very capable little distro and it's actually *fun* to interact with. A distro can have all the bells and whistles but be a bore to use and I didn't get that feeling here (:
@@TylersTechNow Can I ask you this: Most of two weeks later, you seemed to be very positive toward RebornOS (for me, I was really impressed with its maintenance tools!). And so, with that for additional perspective, how do you rank the two? I know you were particularly taken with all the key bindings in InstantOS (not a big appeal for me) but, on balance, where do you land with these two distros?
Entirely depends on what you want out of your desktop really. Reborn takes a vastly different approach and tries to cater to everyone with the different desktop choices. Instant has a more narrow focus in those regards but if that kind of interface is something that appeals to you then that is what you're going to prefer. For me, I preferred InstantOS but both are good choices (:
Instantos is very nice nice for a low ram system it uses like 300mb ram. However scaling on 4k monitor is a pain, can figure out how to scale everything but gtk 2 and the terminals.
It looks interesting. Can you put on a close and minimize button on each open program? If you can install Tweaks that might work. I hear Arch distros aren't always stable which would bother me. Also, I'd like tool bars so I can move windows without using keybindings.
You can minimize windows either through hotkeys or by clicking on the blue window title. A close button is also in the top panel or you can middle click on any window title to close it. You can also move windows around by dragging the blue window border (and put them back into the layout by dragging them to the top like with a de). Movement can also be done by hovering over the border of the currently active floating window. It's something you do need to get used to but that usually happens pretty quickly
You can move not needed application to another workspace and close it with shortcuts 10 times faster than with a mouse. I hope “minimize/close” buttons will never appear in TWM )

You can choose "other" at the bottom and do manual partitioning. It can dual boot and use existing swap and home partitions. The only thing missing is automatically resizing your existing os but you can edit partitions right from the installer
@@PaperBenni thanks, it did the job. I had to manually create partitions since edit partition didn't work. I saw the roadmap on website. Where is roadmap for the features you are adding? Also where do you hear the suggestions and very important how to edit the key bindings :p ?

Yes, pretty good actually. Ram usage on idle is ~160mb on a computer with built in graphics and cpu usage is pretty low too so it leaves plenty for other applications.
