The locks are so amazing and it's crazy how long they have been in operation. Lock 3 is a great viewing location, I can't believe this was your first time there for a video. The time lapse was great, can't wait to see the museum. Thanks for sharing!
In Dec. 1939 the German pocket battleship Graf Spe sought refuge in Montevideo, Uruguay. Three British cruisers waited outside. The captain scuttled his ship rather than surrender. Known as the Battle of the River Plate. There's even a movie made about it.
@@John-dm2ik Hi John. I will watch the movie soon. Not of German descent but I admire their intelligence and contribution to world history from cars to our landing on the moon. We brought over 100 prisoners to Alabama who were engineers and their talent and ours put us on the moon in the 60s. The Apollo program was the result. Jack
Thank you for the video. I live in St Catherine's and have watched the ships go through the Canal. This made it more fun for me being able to sit back with beers and watch the videos with time lapse. 👍👍👍👍👍🍻
New to your trips improves my geographic knowledge and living in Albany NY near the canal often witness these barges now I have been a guest. Your presentation was professional including your voiceover. Jack
Ya know, until I started watching your videos I had no idea how a lock worked! Im land locked here down in Georgia and Im also homebound, so thank you so much for your videos! Locks are a modern marvel and I commend the person or people who came up with the idea. They are fascinating to watch!
Another great perspective video. A timelapse at night watching a ship go through would be amazing. The peace and quiet with just the subtle noise of the ship. It's good to see the crew interact with the people watching, I am going to have to go and check it out next spring or summer when I am in st kitts for the day.
That would be a great shot! I will have to keep that in mind. A well lit place like Lock 3 or Lock 8 in Port Colborne might work. I'll try and capture one before the season ends. The snow would actually help light up the area too.
Great video and I too had no clue there was a viewing area behind the museum. Driven past it many times always say we have to visit museum but we haven’t so far. Definitely stopping now. Thks so much Nigel
Now that I have seen it, everytime I drive over the Garden Skyway I now see it from there. It really was a great place to get a great view of what happens.
My wife and I love going there to watch the ships pass through the locks. BTW, currently eight ships anchored out north of the canal. Quite a sight to see.
both sides of the canal have seen quite a lot of ships anchored outside of the canal, I can only presume it was due to the strong winds and possible maintenance. There was 5 anchored in Hamilton earlier today too.
I hope that you took the time to visit inside the museum. It has a great display showing all of the different iterations of the canal over the years. I used to live beside the remains of the First Welland Canal that ran through the centre of St. Catharines. There is also an original horse drawn, steam powered fire engine on display. This was managed and driven by my Great Great Grandfather, the first paid Chief of the St. C FD. I took a picture of my grandson in front of it. Seven generations of history.
Another well done video! Thank you! I enjoy these so much. Like you, didn't know there was a viewing area, I assumed all of that was restricted, too close to the ships and all.
I never flew the drone, which was a shame, because the App said no fly zone, But I had my drone on the wrong setting, once i changed that, it appeared as OK to fly. So next time I'll add a few drone shots of the lock.
Lock 3 is a great place to watch the ships go through , the three yellow things on the top of the lock wall on opposite side are electro magnets , designed to hold ship in place First tried on lock 8 , where they were ripped right out of the wall , back to the drawing board lol
You were right , auto mooring system , many years ago I worked at lock eight and was told by someone who should have known it was magnetic , I stand corrected @@John-dm2ik
My favorite part about the Welland Canal is the fact that you can literally get right up close and personal with the ships and crew. Don't worry, chat will fundraise your bail to get you out of the Welland Canal jail lol.
It’s too bad about the typical Canadian government’s overreaction with regard to security in cases where it’s unwarranted (ridiculous 8 foot iron bars 5 inches apart)And where it’s really necessary…there’s nothing.
If I am not mistaken, most of these fences have appeared over the last 10 years or so? I do recall being in Port Colborne when i first moved here and I am sure the fences were not there then. It's like Fort Knox. I recently saw some old photos of Allanburg Bridge and there were people swimming on the canal!
@yes that’s about right. The powers that be have been on a mission to draw up as many unnecessary security “protocols”that they can think of (that the taxpayer will fund). While of course ignoring areas that do need attention (Borders). Those swimmers (before the fence)could’ve swam out to a passing freighter with a knife clenched in their teeth -climbed up the hull and hijacked the ship.

Another great video, i have been at lock 3 many times and had picnics there
I will be going back there again soon.
Welcome to the neighborhood ! I've lived near this area for most of my life, and it's one of my favourite spots.
Great to see you are still filming !
Hopefully I will be out there until they drain the canal.

Beer and a timelapse, I hope you can drink quickly.

I was told it was told those things worked by suction, not magnets.

@@John-dm2ik Correct, they're basically huge suction cups. They hold the ship in place via vacuum
I think you are correct, a chap from the Museum came out and asked me if i had noticed the suction cups.

Crews are defiantly very friendly
@Lake Erie Vlogger will you catch the cuyahoga if she comes to Port Colburn to the breakers?
A must!
I'll take a day off work if I have too
