- During the spring of 2019, Brad Paisley traveled to a remote beach located just north of Santa Barbara, CA to meet up with Seymour W. Duncan at the Seymour Duncan Tiny House to talk about his beloved 1968 pink paisley-paper "La Brea" Telecaster and the making of his brand new Signature La Brea Telecaster pickup set.

La Brea is a vintage spec, Telecaster set designed in collaboration with Brad Paisley, featuring smooth alnico II rod magnets in the neck and focused alnico IV rod magnets in the bridge - perfect for achieving Brad’s signature bite, snap, and twang!
In 2017, after a long search for the perfect guitar, Brad Paisley acquired an original 1968 Telecaster. The guitar played beautifully but had unfortunately been refinished in a black acrylic paint. So, Brad brought the guitar to veteran luthier and paisley paper expert, Bill Crook, to have the black paint stripped away to have a classic ’68 paisley pattern applied instead. After removing some of the thick black paint, Bill stumbled on a surprised that would shock them both: Fender’s original pink paisley finish from 1968! Brad dubbed the guitar La Brea, because the black paint hiding the perfectly intact, all-original pink paisley paper reminded him of the tar pits in Southern California. At this point, Brad loved almost everything about La Brea, but there was still something that wasn’t quite right - the pickups. Naturally, Brad called his buddy Seymour W. Duncan, and together they created the perfect, vintage accurate matched pickups - the Brad Paisley Signature La Brea Telecaster Set.
The bridge model features alnico IV rod magnets, vintage-correct cloth push-back wire, vintage output of 7.44k, and classic grey forbon flatwork, giving you the wonderful open quality that you expect from a vintage pickup, but with the focused midrange that only an alnico IV magnet can provide. The neck pickup uses alnico II rod magnets alongside an output of 7.55k, and the same period-correct wire and flatwork to provide a smooth, thick neck tone. Together, these pickups deliver the snap and twang that Brad is known for, with a round top end and full but tight lows. Seymour wound what Brad calls “the perfect set” for his beloved ’68 La Brea Telecaster, and now you can get it too. The Brad Paisley Signature La Brea Telecaster Set, hand built in Santa Barbara, CA.

As a guitarist, I always smile when I hear an artist as well seasoned as Brad talk about their instrument's story without having to have a tech tell them the specs every 10 seconds. Brad was a guitarist first before a singer, so it's no surprise that he'd know about the model's history and specs and what-not.
I've since started listening to more of Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Cody Jinks and Chris Stapleton (some neo-outlaw and southern blues musicians). But I'll never forget why I started listening to that in the first place. Good and true artists like Brad Paisley doing only what he knows what to do.

That has nothing to do with it. It's all down to each person and whether they're interested in that stuff. That's all it is. There are thousands upon thousands of people who only play guitar and don't sing that don't know jack about their guitars.
It has nothing to do with being a guitar player first or anything else. It's just like "car guys". Some guys are into cars and know everything about every classic Ford ever made while other guys know nothing more than where to put gas in the thing they drive. It's simply whether or not they're into those things. That's it.
@@J.C... With all due respect, I posted this out of admiration for Brad Paisley's knowledge towards his instrument and its history. Notice how I stated Brad in a particular manner, and even stated in the above comment the following:

I perhaps misconstrued the message when I then said that his knowledge of his instrument was from his experience towards the instrument, thus knowing the ins and outs of his guitar. So I suppose it's my fault for throwing you off.
You're right about the guitar and car analogy. Look at me, I'm now an enlisted US Marine who drives multiple vehicles that I myself don't know jack about, other than knowing how to drive, how to maintain, and the specifications. I don't know nor care about the history of these vehicles, so I suppose your argument checks out.
But at the same time, I stand by my statement of admiration towards him as a musician and a producer. I just glorified him in a way that made it seem that a lot of his experience and knowledge are intertwined by nature rather than by his own volition. But that shouldn't distract from the point that I intended to make (before I got on a soap box) that I admire Brad Paisley as a musician and producer and guitar historian. And most of all as a songwriter.
Along with Colter Wall, Cody Jinks, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton (and now with my growth in interest into songwriting and producing, artists like Zach Bryan, Sam Barber, Wyatt Flores, Dylan Gossett, and artists from different genres like Billie Eilish, John Mayer, Alec Benjamin, and the members of the Good Kid Band. And that's not to include artists of the past decade and beyond, like George Strait, James Hetfield of Metallica, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Allison Krauss & Union Station, Pat Monahan of Train, Niall Horan, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Jim Croce, James Taylor, John Denver, etc.)
TL;DR, my point of my comment was admiration of Brad Paisley as a musician and a self-made historian to his instrument. If the message made seemed to bridge the connection between those two sides of Brad, then that was by accident and I in no way meant to say that they were connected together to each other without Brad Paisley's own musical zeal and volition.

nicero870 Because it’s not some overproduced cheesy crap made with hired studio musicians. He writes the songs and plays the solos. There just aren’t many artist doing that anymore in country music. I don’t think most of these front guys holding a guitar even know how to play, it’s just a prop.
There are some really great country players out there now, too bad the "pop country" image of the singer with the headset and hat holding the guitar as a prop is so prevalent!

This guy would dominate if he crossed over to some blues rock but he doesn't have to, so he won't and that makes me sad. His guitar playing is so underrated and undersold in his mainstream songs, only live in concert do you see him show his true skills.

There's a bunch of monster players in country and bluegrass they are well known to people that listen and play that style but if you talk to a average metal player about someone like Paisley or even someone like Billy Stings and they won't know about them because it's just outside of their standard listening

Brad Paisley could make a oil can and a piece of string sing like it had a 4 octave range. Love that guy.
As an old Punk and Metal player, I have found my way to the Telecaster's simple/infinite sound, and thus Mr. Paisley's understated mastery of the instrument. I have pared down my collection to ten guitars, incl. two project teles going, and I am going to sink some La Brea pickups (see what I did there) into one; meanwhile, I'm on the search for one that speaks to me when I pick it up. Kudos to Brad for being such a bear for the Tele. Love to all the Brad & the Tele community!
These pick-ups sound very good. Lovely thick neck with that twangy bridge, nice!
So I was looking for a Tele neck for a project and I came across an add for a 1974 Electra tele neck for $40. They guy contacts me and says he has the body as well but that was all. When it was delivered the body was all spray can black. I used acetone on it and underneath was the original TV yellow preserved fairly well. Looks road worn. Anyway, threw a bone nut and some custom pickups in it. Plays and sounds awesome.

I just put a pair of these in one of my Teles, and they're probably the best pickups I've ever played. I'm definitely going to put a set in my other Teles.

@@RebeccaHindle 100%. These pickups are beautiful. The bridge is nice and twangy, but not overly bright. And the neck is smooth and jazzy. They handle overdrive really well, but also cleanup real nice to. Just an overall great pickup set!

The bridge out of this set, and a twisted tele neck, works very, very , well together. But probably not the most traditional of tele tones, but am really digging it.
Something very cool happens in the middle position, something special, the bridge to me is perfect, string balance is great, it has the lower wind clarity, yet no ice pick, and also sits in a mix well. Very happy with the bridge pickup, I have the neck also, but have not installed it in anything yet, so I can speak about that. Anyway. Just my take after a few weeks running the bridge pickup out of this set.

I love my MIJ Paisley reissue. So unique. Those originals that survived have a wicked copper burst though!

@@Ottophil Right? I have a Pink Diasy Rock Tomboy guitar. It comes stock with duncans, grovers, and has a narrow and flat neck, not too different from my old Wolfgang. For a "girl guitar" it really sings.

I have a USA-made Tele, with blue Paisley on it. I recently purchased a Harley Benton Tele, black with gold Paisley. The Harley Benton Tele,I dropped Seymour Duncan pickups in it. Both of them are great sounding and great playing guitars. I don't care what anybody says, I really dig Fenders with a paisley print. My next search is to find a USA Stratocaster with paisley print and I really don't care what color. Once I have a paisley print Stratocaster in my collection I will be a happy guy (until I find another guitar that I want a month down the line from now...…lol),.., I am definitely bitten by the collecting bug I'm up to 28 guitars,.,..

@@ricardoraulino-guitar I'm on TH-cam(I don't do Instagram or Twitter) and they're not hanging on the wall they're mostly in cases I only keep a few out. Some of my videos might have half-a-dozen guitars laying around but I've never made a video of all of my guitars which I really should do now that someone has posed a question like this to me.
Omg dude I received my Harley Benton paisley tele a few months ago and absolutely love that sucker! I stink at playing since I'm a beginner but that is one gorgeous guitar. 45 years old and its never too late to play in life

Brad Paisley is what drew me to country music 20 sum years ago.
Today's country music on the radio is anything but country. Nashville and the c m industry now days definitely cares more about money than a genuine product.
I'm not really into country music yet. Mostly rock, blues, and jazz. Bet I'd love it if I'd practice on it. These pickups are sounding great. Thanks.

Country Music has ALWAYS been session musicians and professional songwriters who don’t (usually) pursue a performance career.
There are notable exceptions, but even those artists often started as songwriters and/or session musicians.
At least prior to the 90s the music that ”mainstream” country wasn’t the country pop we have today.

Brad would make an old string on a broom handle sound good. Nice pickups, though maybe a pinch more upper bite on the bridge (Hey, Roy Buchanan ). Otherwise great. Brad is such a stellar player and a decent guy to boot.

Such a cool video. @seymouduncan cannot find wiring diagrams for this on the website. Does the La Brea Bridge pickup need to be separately ground(string ground) or is it vintage style string ground via the base plate ?

Well crap, I already been through Fralins and Lollars, looking for that perfect tele pickup, who knew Seymour Duncan had them all along!
Brad played a Lindy Fralin in the bridge for years, and I wouldn’t doubt if he still does. Lindy is a close friend and I tried to talk him into doing a Brad signature model years ago, but he just wouldn’t hear of it. I think he thought of it as “selling out” for some reason. 🤷♂️

Whoa so I just wanted to revisit this video. I looked up the bridge pickup to preorder today, and it’s only $89! I was expecting it to be some exclusive custom shop artist model pickup costing like $149 or something absurd like that. What an awesome price point, great job SD! I’m getting myself one.

I'm a metal/rock guitarist and the only way i can stand country music is if it's live....but i love Brad Paisley, he's a bad ass guitarist and i respect the hell out of him. I could not come close to play some of the stuff he plays...i think i might build myself a tele.

And you know what? I just bought the set and I putted it on my RI'52 and restablished the standard wiring by the same time, added a new set of Slinky 10.46, I preconize to let the pickguard out some days, the time to check the hight of pickups to combine neck and bridge, the middle position is delight. The twang is amazing very Brad sound like in every kind of good amps Marshall / Fender / Vox a bit of compression, delay and overdrive to get a power sound (chorus if you want) but just a bit it's subtile. Do not use with heavy distorsion it's not his territor. I would say it' less polyvalent that my stock vintage RI pickup specifically to play Hendrix or hard rock stuff but if you love midrange chicken picking it's absolutely perfect.

I remember hanging with my metalhead buddy. He grew up with metal and punk(sabbath and ramones) and i grew up on southern rock and country (skynard and strait) We ended up bonding over our love of extreme metal (Death and Megadeth specifically) while our music tastes continued to get heavier so did our partying.
After a night of hard drinking(homemade wine n whiskey) we started a playful argument about music as we usually did. He made a jab about country music being being bad musicians and a simply laughed and pulled out my phone. I showed him a few live shows of Brad and my friend was awestruck. He ended up becoming a fan.
We ended up drifting apart. Ive been sober for almost 3 years but unfortunately my friend wasn't so lucky.
RIP Zach i miss you and im sorry i wasn't there for you.

A couple of points. Players did not just rip off the paisley, it peeled very easily as the silver wall paper did not move when the guitar swelled or shrunk due to humidity changes. The workshop on the beach is a great idea, but as someone who had guitars in a beach house for years, I have to warn you, over time the salt air destroys electronics.
When are they going to be available? How much $ for a set?
My understanding is that these pickups will be available by Spring, and will run about $169 for the set. Hope this helps.

Michael Steven no. Blow by blow was cut on a refinished and reworked 52 Les Paul that has been converted to PAFs.

I think this set, wound by Seymour personally, for Brad personally sound different -noticeably better- than the ones we can buy from Seymour Duncan as a serial product.
My brother in law and sister seen him playing in a casino bar in West Virginia before he hit the big time. They talked to him for around 10-15 minutes, and he handed them a copy of his demo CD that he was apparently shopping around to record companies at the time. They still have that CD, signed, in their curio cabinet with other things that were autographed by NASCAR guys, and other celebrities.
