I had the donkey Kong coleco mini when I was a kid. Sat in the dark for hours playing that game. Great stuff!!! If you were a kid when this came out you would not be so critical. Glad I came up when I did in the gaming world. Started with pong, and atari 2600. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for playing the audio of the game. This little game popped into my head randomly, and I wanted to experience it again. As soon as I heard it, I was a child again. Thank you.
I always wanted one of these but my parents could never afford it. I remember kids bringing these in for show&tell at school but good luck trying to get a shot at playing it with 20 other kids wanting to play it as well lol. Well 35 years later and I finally own Pac-man. I picked one up at a flea market today for $25 and to my surprise it still works. Other than the sound it's really not that bad. I think for the technology at the time Coleco nailed it.
I still have mine, sadly it doesn't work and I'm afraid to take it apart. I LOVE this video, the camera work, the close ups, the historical information, the production value, you name it. This is what I'm shooting for, I'm one week into YouTubing with next to zero technology and budget, but hope to reach your quality level soon. Thanks so much for posting this video, I am going to share on my page.
This was the first version of Pac-Man I played, and man that opening jingle has stuck with me and it's just an exstacy shot everytime I hear it (not that often anymore since I think our Pac-Man mini arcade broke)
I've played Pacman before, but I never knew something like THIS existed! I love your retro videos, as I feel like I am learning things about video game history. Keep up the good work!
I had one and loved it! Played it all the time. Bet by parents probably threw it away when i got older, but this was an awesome game for a kid in the 80's!
What a beautifully exectuted review on all levels! As a kid, I was so envious that the neighbors kids had this device and I'd always go over there to play it, much to their annoyance. Now as an adult I decided to buy one off Ebay. But of course the experience isn't as fun as I remember it hehe. You explain well why that is. Still a nice thing to have on the shelf.
My cousin and I really enjoyed the mini coleco Pac-man. We didn't mind its sound and, contrary to the reviewer, we found the joystick was easy to operate. I vaguely remember us abandoning the two player mode because as one players pac-man's score went up the other players score was decreased and vice versa. We preferred taking turns and cheering each other on.
This version also had third game on it called "Eat and Run" in which featured a maze with no dots and just the 4 energizers. The goal was to avoid the ghosts and eat all 4 energizers (which did not make the ghosts edible) The game was a product of its time with very limited LCD and sound yet the collection sold like hotcakes
The ghost look like so grotesque. Gives me the spooks, man. Excellent stuff! The way you've sown this unit off, as with Galaxian and even Mario's Cement Factory a while back, show off the design of these units well; those little details shouldn't even be lost on people! I've played one of these, and I'll second your comment on the joysticks; they feel very squishy in the unit I toyed with!
I had the Coleco Mini Arcade toys of Pac-Man, Galaxian and Frogger, and I totally agree what you said about the imperfect controls on Pac-Man. Out of all those three that I owned, I probably enjoyed Frogger the best because I owned it longer. Also, I never could find that power pack that you mentioned, so every toy ate batteries like Pac-Man ate power pellets.
Man, Shane, I am half way through the video and had to leave a comment on how well this has been edited, I can now understand the Tweets and which direction you are hoping to change the channel. This editing, I love it. When other TH-camrs review a game it seems to be more based on them (camera wise) but this is mostly on the game and not on you. Keep up the good work mang. You're going to go far. :D
Why is ms pacman always stands out of pac man 1 . Ma pacman is better in atari 2 coleco ms pacman has no screexh but still has the same thing and ms pacman eats faster than pacman
2:56 lol. I had this thing 30(?) years ago. I remember my father complaining about the anoying sound while I played it over and over in the back of our car on journeys. I ended up putting tape on those speaker grills; which diedn't help much lol. nice to hear that sound again. love the intro song lol
The portable games of the early era were pretty creative. I remember playing a Defender table-top unit which was quite fun. Loved the look of these, and the Pac-Man shaped one Coleco also made. I have the Perma-Power battery replacements in my Colecovision steering wheel. Always thought they were kind of neat.
About 10 years ago I got one of these that didn't work at a yard sale for about a buck. I didn't mind that it didn't work, since it still looked cool on a shelf.
The VFDs did have one thing over the later LCD game displays: brightness that resemble the arcade graphics themselves. And the combined ghost/dot/pac man at least give you a way to see when the ghost is ready to eat by seeing when the pac man in the head is on or off. The later LCD versions don't have that going on, with the three elements being separate and relatively small. It can be hard to tell if a ghost is passing by, or about to eat you until it's too late.
I had this as a kid in the 80s! It was hands down the best thing I have ever owned and I really miss it :( Agreed the sound is awful. I pretty quickly learned to play it with the sound off. The sound is so bad that having the sound on actually made the game harder, it was distracting. Sound off also saved batteries (until my mom got me that power adapter you listed.) I was 8 when these came out. I got good enough that I could effectively play without dying indefinitely and simply shut it off when I got bored or had to do something else. I really miss mine.
wow i had one of those when i was a teen drove my parents crazy with the sounds you couldnt mute i thinkk we had to take. it apart and disable the speaker also had the battery pack
Really nicely put together, Sounds good, Looks good and it flowed well... cracking job with this one. I've never seen one of these before but that's probably due to me being over seas... not sure if we had something like this in the UK. The design of the unit is pretty nice especially considering the limitations.... the battery/power solution was pretty neat as well.
Remember that you are dealing with a 36 year old tabletop VFD game, so yes, it isnt going be as 'nice' as stuff you can get today. That said, I saw this game when I was at a friends house back in 1981 or 1982 (I was in kindergarten then) and I was simply blown away by what I had seen, and wanted one so bad ever since. I did get a VFD game for Christmas a couple years later an Astrothunder (Radio Shack rebrand of Firefox F-7), and I was blown away by that as well, and I spent hours on end in a totally dark room playing that one. It's funny, but the old VFD games still feel more high tech to me than a smartphone or a modern handheld gaming system. Maybe it is the way the old VFD segments glowed, the styling of the cases (everything seems to be a plain black monolith these days, back then they actually looked like arcade games), the sounds (growing up in the 1980's, simple square wave bleeps/bloops = high tech so I guess that just stuck with me all these decades), I dunno, but I still get a thrill whenever I just look at one.
The new LCD mini arcades by Basic Fun are worth a review by you. (Most of them) are really well recreated and really fun to play. My personal favorites are the LCD versions of Q*Bert, Centipede, and Ms. Pacman. If you review them, be sure not to pick up the dot-matrix versions of these games by Basic Fun, but pick up the LCD versions.
Oh my! I was just talking to a friend of mine about how I threw this game down a dirt hill, when I was like 5! The things kids do when they run out of batteries to play with their toy.
My dad had this when I was a little kid and even tho the noises were grateing I loved it to death....sadly bc of money he had to sell it off to some collectors....I have recently moved towns and the mall has this like second hand geek shop....with the machine :D ......its expencive tho...and deispite never being able to play one again most likely I love seeing it...the old charm simply brings a smile to my face
I think the joysticks might have gotten wore. I don't remember that sensation/memory going thru my brain. In a 5 min video, you awoke a crapload of memories in my brain that I failed to realized I still had.
I have a memory on how I was first introduced to video games. I remember playing a Pac-Man game where you are in a gray hall and you go and choose what namco game you want to play. I think it was on PlayStation or something. I was 5 or 6 years old that time. I suck at Pac-Man.
As a contrast, I love how now all that's needed for a mini arcade machine for a game is simply a ROM dump of the arcade game being played on the mini arcade machine through emulation. I think they use possibly a custom version of MAME, but I could be completely wrong since I don't know how they make the decisions on how to emulate the old games.
I Still have the Pac Man and Donley Kong Of these in great condition! I grew up in the 80's and it is amazing how far games ave come BUT I would STILL prefer being in an original arcade and Im not talking one of the modern ones either. I want that dim lit cigarette smoke filled loud 80.s arcade! The new games are somewhat cool but the arcades just dont have the same vib they did back then. They were their own reality in a sense!
The best thing about these mini arcades was the look of the actual device. The actual games were absolutely awful!!! I remember getting Donkey Kong for Xmas as a 10 year old and was so disappointed after playing it. It still is my fondest memory as a kid opening up that gift from Santa back in 1982!!!
I happen to still own one of these. I've never played it all that much, which is probably why it's still in playable condition. The joysticks aren't great, but they are usable. The sound is pretty obnoxious, though (and the primary reason I don't play this often). I do remember reading some gaming or electronics magazine where they showed how you could modify the unit so that it took an external joystick (Atari 2600) and added a volume control dial.
I had one, maybe it is still somewhere in my house!!! I also had the yellow rounded version (single player) with slightly better sound. Dunno the maker, tho. I always played when I was waiting for my Vic 20 to load :)
I think the fact that it was 1981 should be taken into consideration. Pac Man was released in the arcades in 1980, and the horrible 2600 version didn't come out until 1982. So in 1981, what was a Pac Man fan to do? TOMY made a cool looking, flat yellow version, but I'm not sure of the year of release...
I picked up 2 of these for $35, and I was surprised to see that they still work. I can vouch for the control issue; sometimes I think I moved the joystick left and instead Pac-Man will go down.
There's this small business toy store near where I live. The guy who owns it had them laying around and wanted to get rid of them. He gave them to me cheap since both of them have issues with the batteries (they wont stay in properly even with the battery cover on it) and the stickers on one are either gone or peeling. I fixed this by taking a folded up piece of paper and taping it to the inside of the battery cover for extra support.
I got this version when I was about 9 or 10 yrs old. I loved it ! but it tore through batteries like nobody's business ! & the sound was excessively {{ LOUD }} I really wish that coleco would have added a volume control knob to turn it down. I ultimately ended up wearing out the joysticks as I would play it constantly ! It's funny. As a kid I didn't notice the noise so much. I could only imagine how much it must have gotten on my Mom & Dads nerves now that I think of it. >_
Its funny because in 1982 this was cutting edge for portable gaming and I question a "review" based on what we know decades later, as opposed to keeping the critiques in line with that era. 30 years from now someone will crap on our games because he or she will be playing 4D games with mind control. Then, someone 30 years after that will do the same. So, the fact that you could have a mini arcade machine of the world's most popular game in your own home was in and of itself AMAZING despite its techical short comings BY TODAY'S STANDARDS..
I dunno man... These Coleco mini arcades remind me too much of the Tiger Electronic and game and watch games. I would rather just play the original video arcade version than this, but that's just my preference. Very nicely edited man! You have some pretty astounding cameras that show off the inches and corners of these things so masterfully.
On reproduction labels, the controller is wrong, the joy stick arrows were originally blue but now it is black along with the circle around the button. Just wanted you to know
Hey Rerez, I saw the Coleco Tabletop version of Pac-Man on a game show called "Starcade". More specifically, Episodes 1-10 when Mark Richards was the host at the time and the Coleco Tabletop version of Pac-Man was featured as a prize for getting 3 out of 4 games right on the "Super Prize Round". Would this Coleco tabletop game be recommended for fans of Starcade?
Wow! It's pretty interesting how they were able to make a game that was still somewhat satisfying to play. I can't believe this thing was so limited it needed to reuse the sprites for the ghost eyes. Is it better than Pac Man 2600? >.> Can you turn the horrific sounds off?
I used to have this portable version. It was a fun I thought even better than 2600 cartridge. However he summed it up with sound effects😂😂😂yep that bad...
Gotta echo Handsome Jonni (and probably some other commentors) and ask why you didn't talk about "Eat & Run" As someone who couldn't get his folks to pony up one of these for Christmas, I was kinda curious about that.
It's not really so much about gameplay with this one. It's more of a collectors item to display in you're man cave. I have all of the Coleco table tops with the exception of Ms. Pac Man and I must say they look awesome on my shelve. The best looking one is the Zaxxon version. It's a bit bigger very nice mini cab,but it's completely unplayable. Great video
I played this for months and months after one Christmas in the 80s...driving my family totally insane!!!
You have to admit, it's pretty damn neat how creative they got in order to get around the limitations of a vfd display for this game.
jokerswild00 I agree! :)
I had the donkey Kong coleco mini when I was a kid. Sat in the dark for hours playing that game. Great stuff!!! If you were a kid when this came out you would not be so critical. Glad I came up when I did in the gaming world. Started with pong, and atari 2600. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

My uncle had this when I was a kid, we would play it all the time! Oh, sweet childhood memories 😊😢
Absolutely love the slower paced editing in this. Really gives you a chance to look at whats going on.
Great reflection on Pac-Man and the mini arcade. Very respectful review, and brilliantly edited together.
Thanks! :)
***** Your videos are quite good Mr. Critic. :D
Do we get to hear any of the original sounds in this video?
I still have mine, sadly it doesn't work and I'm afraid to take it apart. I LOVE this video, the camera work, the close ups, the historical information, the production value, you name it. both my dad and my step dad have one of these still. Both in near perfect condition

I used to love that Pac-Man tablestop LED game. Used to drive my mom nuts. She said it sounded like the Ghostbuster's car.
I think so too lol I hated the sound

So.. So I shouldn't make Pac-Man Coleco Mini Arcade the next Epic Game Music?
It would just be high pitched sirens on repeat!
....you totally should do that...
Why is ms pacman always stands out of pac man 1 . Ma pacman is better in atari 2 coleco ms pacman has no screexh but still has the same thing and ms pacman eats faster than pacman

Nice glamour shots of the machine!
Another mini arcade? Is it Mini Arcade Month on Rerez? Good job as always, Shane!
I still have mine (I'm 57).

I have the Perma-Power battery replacements in my Colecovision steering wheel. Always thought they were kind of neat.
I was 5 or 6 when I got it. Pretty epic then. I’d be tempted to get one now but it would probably spoil my memory
I wanted one of these so bad when I was a kid! I lived, ate, slept, and breathed Pac-Man.
About 10 years ago I got one of these that didn't work at a yard sale for about a buck. I didn't mind that it didn't work, since it still looked cool on a shelf.

"Stick to the arcades"
...wish that was still an option anymore. Last arcade anywhere near my town shutdown ywars ago.
Ever heard of MAME or Namco Museum
Huge one stones throw from my house that serves beer, every board you could ever wanna play
Wow, this is very professionally done! Excellent review :)
Danke!
I had this as a kid in the 80s! It was hands down the best thing I have ever owned and I really miss it :(

I really miss mine.
Good shots of that vfd display. I love the way that technology looks, even though it's a bit primitive by todays standards.
it's so weird...i literally just got this mini arcade at a pawn shop like a week ago lol
What do you think of it?
it's really cool for what it is...the controls just take some getting used to...you just need to actually be precise when using the joystick
The "Mr. Arcade" commercials for these machines are *incredible*
wow i had one of those when i was a teen drove my parents crazy with the sounds you couldnt mute i thinkk we had to take. it apart and disable the speaker also had the battery pack

It's funny, but the old VFD games still feel more high tech to me than a smartphone or
a modern handheld gaming system. Maybe it is the way the old VFD segments glowed,
the styling of the cases (everything seems to be a plain black monolith these days, back then they actually looked like arcade games), the sounds (growing up in the 1980's, simple square wave bleeps/bloops = high tech so I guess that just stuck with me all these decades), I dunno, but I still get a thrill whenever I just look at one.

You: "The sound effects are TERRIBLE" -> plays sound effects -> Me: Flooded with 80s nostalgia and joy :)
Oh my! I was just talking to a friend of mine about how I threw this game down a dirt hill, when I was like 5! The things kids do when they run out of batteries to play with their toy.
I played this miniature version as a kid and loved it 👍
It's so weird seeing Rerez so relaxed...

I had one of these growing up.. I cannot tell you how many hours I have spent playing this game
If i got the galaga mini arcade for Christmas in 1981 I'd be flippin' out the window
Beautifully shot video
I think the joysticks might have gotten wore. I don't remember that sensation/memory going thru my brain. In a 5 min video, you awoke a crapload of memories in my brain that I failed to realized I still had.
I have a memory on how I was first introduced to video games. I remember playing a Pac-Man game where you are in a gray hall and you go and choose what namco game you want to play. I think it was on PlayStation or something. I was 5 or 6 years old that time. I suck at Pac-Man.
I think that was Namco Museum. That one was good! I think Bosconian was on one of those games.
Awesome review. I always thought the pac man inside the ghost body was creepy.
Despite the gameplay not being as good, this unit looks great on a desk or a shelf
I Still have the Pac Man and Donley Kong Of these in great condition! I grew up in the 80's and it is amazing how far games ave come BUT I would STILL prefer being in an original arcade and Im not talking one of the modern ones either. Playing a game while waiting for another game to load? That's boss. :D
This was my first experience of Pac-Man.
A video released in 2014 that feels like it came out in 2021... WOW
I had this one. I wish i still had it.
I picked up 2 of these for $35, and I was surprised to see that they still work. I can vouch for the control issue; sometimes I think I moved the joystick left and instead Pac-Man will go down.
Where did you find these?
There's this small business toy store near where I live. The guy who owns it had them laying around and wanted to get rid of them. He gave them to me cheap since both of them have issues with the batteries (they wont stay in properly even with the battery cover on it) and the stickers on one are either gone or peeling. I have that one and a frogger one and they both work perfectly
They need to make a album based on the sound effects.
I still have mine my brother bought me when I was a kid.
Sorry if this has already been asked, but isn't there a mode on this called "Eat and Run?"
By the way, subscribed :)
Handsome Jonni it is already asked
I have one in my collection of vintage stuff I bought it at a yard sale for 5 bucks :)
So fun
This was the first video game I ever played.
It would be very cool if they went back and made these but put in a lcd screen with the actually arcade game in it
I got this version when I was about 9 or 10 yrs old. I loved it ! but it tore through batteries like nobody's business ! & the sound was excessively {{ LOUD }} I really wish that coleco would have added a volume control knob to turn it down. I could only imagine how much it must have gotten on my Mom & Dads nerves now that I think of it. >_
I remember this it was awesome back at the time the only thing that would annoy you was indeed the sound
omg i had this as kid o look pushinuproses i like her is pretty awesome :) can't believe it took me this long to find this channel
At the time this was awesome
I wanted one of these so bad when they came out but nobody could afford them.
Put a piece of 1/8” thick foam between the speaker cone and the speaker element to vastly reduce the annoying volume.
Played mine so much I got blisters on my fingers. I was under 10 years old. I'd love to reacquire one.
how could you NOT mention the Eat n RUn variation! sooo fun

They made some in the 21st century, They run on Either AA Batteries, AAA’s, or Rechargables.

On reproduction labels, the controller is wrong, the joy stick arrows were originally blue but now it is black along with the circle around the button. Just wanted you to know

I have that. It was my mom's brothers and she let me have it
Hey Rerez, I saw the Coleco Tabletop version of Pac-Man on a game show called "Starcade".
Is it better than Pac Man 2600? >.> Can you turn the horrific sounds off?
my grandpa got me this
I used to have this portable version. It was a fun I thought even better than 2600 cartridge. However he summed it up with sound effects😂😂😂yep that bad...
I have a pac man coleco tabletop. When you try to move up, it's almost not responsive at all...
Gotta echo Handsome Jonni (and probably some other commentors) and ask why you didn't talk about "Eat & Run"
As someone who couldn't get his folks to pony up one of these for Christmas, I was kinda curious about that.
My boss has this at work he lets people take it to there table and play it while they wait for there food if they want to
i played that game as a kid
It's not really so much about gameplay with this one. It's more of a collectors item to display in you're man cave. I have all of the Coleco table tops with the exception of Ms. Pac Man and I must say they look awesome on my shelve. The best looking one is the Zaxxon version. It's a bit bigger very nice mini cab,but it's completely unplayable. Great video
I had that when it was new. I played it everyday. The joysticks do wear out. Try swapping player one to two.
Just got this from my Grandparents basement. Gonna put in some batterys and hope it works!
I had one as a kid
