  • Get it while it's hot. There's only a few things in life that are certain - death, taxes and a strike against your account for posting an "Ozzy" cover. I received a notice that the video was blocked before I even hit the "publish" button. I filed a dispute but I'd be surprised if they didn't reject that dispute, give me a strike and make me file the dreaded counter-dispute.
    Steal Away (The Night) off the album, "Blizzard of Ozz" released on September 12, 1980 in the UK and on March 27, 1981 in the US.
    This was the third runner-up in the people’s choice, video selection contest. Actually, it was tied with "Mr. Crowley" but the responsibility to break the tie was left to me. And, as luck would have it, today is Randy Rhoads’ birthday. He was born on this date in 1956 and had an particularly bright future ahead of him had he not died in a senseless accident.
    I was never into metal but I really did like the early Blizzard of Ozz albums (I make a conscious effort not to refer to them as “Ozzy” albums.) Not to knock Ozzy but I think what made those albums so great were the contributions made by Randy and Bob Daisley. And what’s there not to like about Bob Daisley? Great player. Great bass lines. Seems like a really nice fellow who got a bit of a raw deal out of that whole experience. He’s got a great website. Check out his bass/guitar collection. You know, Geddy bought the Zematis bass he used on ”Losing It” last tour from Bob.
    www.bobdaisley.com
    I recorded this video last spring when I first got this Peavey T40 (see my “Don’t Stop Believing” video for the story on that.) I chose a couple of songs that I thought suited the sound of this bass well. I think the bass’s sound is heavier in the low-mids and lighter on the top end compared to my other basses, but is still pretty focused sounding. I had just gotten the bass and, if you hang around long enough, you might notice that I pushed the E string off the side of the neck once or twice with my left hand. I also play the ascending line during the verse a bit differently. I play the ascending notes on the G string, as Bob does, but pedal the open D in between to fill it up a little.
    I liked this album better than “Diary…” because it was recorded in concert pitch and didn’t require me to retune my bass. A lot of songs from this album were on my regular practice roster when I was young and what gave me the initial idea to cover this was a video by a young bass playing friend and her brother covering this song. I’ve got a soft spot for young people who take up, the often thankless instrument of, the bass guitar, but I’m even more impressed by girls/women who take up the bass. It just seems like such a “guy” thing. Liv does a great job on the song and even throws a few Rudy Sarzo bass punches for good measure. I’d be afraid that I’d hurt my hand. Great job Liv. Keep up the good work.

    I once read one of your post about getting into trouble with ' Ozzy' s' legal team! Flippin ech! There doesn't seem to be ' clarity' with this ' honest' publishing and doing a broadcast for the love of music on the TH-cam and Internet. Hope you never get into any trouble with your ' inspiring' / video, hobby, / no flippin harm demonstrations and just flippin cool! 👍❤️🇬🇧

    Nice one here, Troy. So great to see some love being given to Mr. Daisley. His tone on those first two albums is right up my alley -- super MID BOOST!! I have always been a huge fan of midrange on bass guitar. Those are the frequencies that really let you HEAR what is going on. And, when dealing with things like crunchy/chorused/flanged electric guitars, having a mid-accented sound on the bass guitar is the way to go. The Blizzard of Ozz stuff is excellent. And, let us not forget that Bob was the lyricist as well! He and Randy were a great team of songwriters, players and all around people! Oh, and I love seeing/hearing you play your T-40. It's IMMACULATE! Kudos to you for getting one in such fine condition. I am still extremely curious to try one out myself. As always, thanks for posting this clip!

    • @southron1861
      @southron1861 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree with you on boosting the mids Tony. I've always mixed my tone with more mids than bass and treble. Really helps the bass cut through the mix and be heard. Especially when using the D'Addario pro-steel strings.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tony Kerr Thanks for the great comment. I agree with all of it. With regard to the midrange frequencies on the bass, I think that's the problem Geddy's had with his live sound since he started using the Jazz basses live. The sound is huge, but it's mostly lows and highs and not very well defined at all.

  • @jenraider72
    @jenraider72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, that was excellent; well done, indeed! I've always loved this song and been a fan of Bob Daisley and his awesome musicianship as a bassist and lyricist. While I am a guitar player (just an average self-taught/teaching rock/metal player), I think I found a true appreciation for bass guitar from my first boyfriend from the early to mid-90s who himself was a very talented bassist/songwriter who could read music, understand theory and gave lessons at a music store. I remember that he had an old Rickenbacker and then an Aria Pro (spelling?) with 5 strings and could play different styles of music with ease but enjoyed heavy metal/hard rock mainly & always just used his fingers. _(Mentioned the plucking vs picking just as a descriptor & not a type of merit badge since both methods are popular among bassists at every level))_ I love interesting, basslines, like melodic & intricate ones or cool octave jumps & I like when you can actually "hear the bass" at the level it is meant to be heard in a recording or show vs way too low/almost absent.

    People in the past would say all that heavy metal, just music for morons. Well that makes me a moron then and Daisley was a very underestimated bass player. There's some wonderful stuff he plays on blizzard and will trip your fingers, god knows I've tried playing this after revelation mother earth and my hands (probably my heavy playing ) feel worn down

      @@TJH3113 I haven't ever had the chance to play an Aria. I actually hadn't picked up my bass in twenty plus years. It's like learning all over again. Thank You for the videos 👍
