I hadn’t thought about the grease gland having issues that can come up until I saw this video and the one Saskia did about Mr. Chubbs having a tumor on his grease gland. I hope Popeye’s doesn’t get to that point but it doesn’t look like it will. His seems more like it got impacted with dry grease and therefore became swollen and inflamed and now that you’ve cleaned and medicated the area I bet it’ll be good as new in no time, especially considering how quickly guinea pigs heal when given the right care and nutrients to help facilitate the healing process. Thank you for sharing this with us Scotty. You definitely brought my attention to an area I hadn’t thought much about and broadened my knowledge of guinea pig care even further. I appreciate you and your piggies for helping me learn how to love and care for my boys properly. Please give Popeye some extra love from Champ, Nugget and myself way over here in Kentucky. I know my piggies wouldn’t be doing as well as they are without the benefit of your knowledge and experience and all your piggie helpers so thank you again from the bottom of my heart. 💕☺️💕
Do you remember the abscesses my boy Roadie had next to his grease gland last year Scotty? Oh boy they stunk. Roadie was the 1st boy I've ever had to develop abscesses beside the scent gland like that.
awww... poor popeye. so sweet. so patient. such a good boy. i remember YEARS ago our piggies, mostly red, would get sebaceous cysts and he said that the red piggies were more prone to this. maybe oil glands too? scotty, do you think using dawn dishsoap only on the affected area would work? keep us updated, dr scotty.
My boys seem to just get a build up of orange wax, which makes the fur stick to it and stiffen slightly. I’m concerned that I don’t over clean it, because that just makes them produce more; but I also don’t want to leave it indefinitely. At the moment I seem to get by with occasionally putting oil on it and wiping it away (gently combing helps too); but they hate me touching that area and they act all funny as if it tickles/annoys them.
Everything in me KNOWS that that isn’t a butthole, but it looks enough like one that it’s making me clench mine in discomfort 😬😂 Poor boy, that looks irritating. It’s definitely worth keeping clean and see how it heals with the ointment :) I’d be inclined to avoid fiddling with it lots.
there are 3 great things you already own that can help yu a cellphone w/ the saskas number and dr nans numbers needle rubbing achoal and medicated ointment. one tiny hole and u'll know. yes if I was rk close i'd be one of "those" neighbors
If it was painful? Popeye would be trying to kick or bite Scotty. Guinea Pigs are known for being dramatic. The squeals are more about saying it is uncomfortable but not saying it is painful.
Do females have grease glands as well?
Yes, but they're generally not as active.
PopEye is such a good boy! He says OINKment please! 💕♥️💕
Lol Joy
This was something I wasn't aware of, so thanks for putting this out there.
You're very welcome
Handsome boys. And it sure can be funky! 🕺

Using Dawn dish soap only cuts the grease but as you can see it is clean and there is no grease on there.
great video, Scotty!
Thank you Jennifer
Never seen this sort of lump before! Will be interested to see what happens. He's very trusting. Popeye knows he's got a good Dad ❣ YNWA
Yes I'm not sure if there is even what you would call in traditional lump.

Ouch
Hopefully not too bad

Looks too solid to squeeze
Thank You!!! ♥️
You're welcome
Fight oil with oil
Popeye is such a sweet boy ✨❤️

I would not use a needle.
Maybe some antibiotic on cyst and cbd oil on ear. Don’t aggravate it and hurt Popeye plez

Popeye is so cute 💕
He sure is, Janice
I hope it's just inflamed and not the start of a tumor like Saskia just posted about. Popeye is such a gentle boy
Yes what a strange coincidence. You know I will be keeping a close eye on it. Popeye has a nationwide pet insurance
