@morpheos111. That’s how it’s suppose to be!! Making movies is more than a job. For him it’s total dedication. Mind you this guy left school when he was 15.
It is said that Tarantino did quite a similar approach to his film Kill Bill, Vol.1. When movie execs screened his film and told him to edit out more than half of the Crazy 88 fight scene with Beatrix, or face not so favorable movie classification for the whole film because of the gore and too much bloodshed, Tarantino decided to modify a large portion of the fight scene from full color to black and white to dull the senses and hopefully tone down extreme violence. In that same scene, Tarantino inserted a part where a female character shut off the lights during intense fighting that only the silhouettes of his characters can be seen to achieve less emotional intensity among viewers. In the end, Tarantino was able to have the whole Crazy 88 fight scene pass the movie execs approval and seemed to have quite favorable movie classification.

@akshay Viswambharan Violence and profanity are tools that are needed for a certain type of film, not every movie. Both Quentin and Scorsese utilize them pretty well. But, don't generalize Indian films. It appears that you haven't watched Indian cinema at all. So many underappreciated and not popular gems lie in the beautiful diverse languages. Again, don't have a condescending attitude.
Given the Scorsese scene in the back of Travis's cab, the legend as opposed to the truth was printed. Seeing a new 70mm print in 1996 was one of the greatest cinematic joys of my life.
It's a true story. What happened is that after Marty desaturated the the blood, he was actually pleased because it made the scene (for him) even more nightmarish!
Idk when this was recorded, but this definitely influenced Tarantinos thought process for Kill Bill where he made the bloodiest scene black and white in order to get that R rating
I heard that when they filmed the movie they knew ahead of time the shootout would be scrutinized, so the purposely used "orange" blood, which in my opinion looked MORE realistic and graphic!
the colour desaturation part is true as i've heard scorsese talking about that in interviews but, the drunken plot to shoot his boss i've never heard that before

My favorite Taxi Driver story was that the script originally called for all the villains to be black but Scorsese said "No dude, that's racist." So he made the character that Harvey Keitel would play a white pimp who acts like a white dude who thinks he's black and have him work for the Italian Mafia. BangoBuck87 Hey you bring up an extremely interesting point. What aspects of crazy people do you think tends for them to make the best art? Im very curious.
Not a reference but for the same reason "Originally, no black and white photographic effects were going to be used (and in the Japanese version, none are), but the MPAA demanded measures be taken to tone the scene down. Tarantino merely used the old trick for its intended purpose, rather than merely as an homage. "
Just because he’s a great director on the list of the best in my opinion that doesn’t mean he’s not human you’d probably wonder what does that have to do with anything I’ll tell you this was the 70s and times were difficult everyone was doing cocaine and that shit does something to ya and make you unable to think straight Besides you ever Been in a situation where you wanted to do or make something but you weren’t allowed to because it’s too much and you tone it to a level where you don’t even see it as your work anymore
It would make more sense to shoot additional scenes so graphic and never meant to be approved and not vital to the film so that when the censorship comes in, what you cut makes what you have seem tame and keeps the integrity of the original film.
What's remarkable is that by desaturating the colour, Scorcese made the film more realistic and less garish and therefore more honest(especially in its use of violence) and the executives passed it along with the MPAA.
