Kirovs have an interesting backstory. In RA2, the Soviet aircraft industry was atrophied due to Allied post-war sanctions and they had to rely on older aircraft tech to make a functional air force. And they became so meme worthy that they were brought back in RA3 despite the fact that they make no sense from a military point of view.
I presume they are in because they are an iconic unit, even though in RA2 they didn't get a lot of use in competitive play. Granted the Soviets late game in RA2 was crap in general so by that logic the Apocalypse Tank should have been canned, except it shouldn't because it's not C&C without some version of the Mammoth Tank.
Also ironically the most prolific user of air ships has actually been the US. Because the US controls close to 70% of helium reserves. Despite their vast territory the USSR didn't have any substantial helium reserves.
I remember the days in red alert 2 when they are the most terrifying units, when you are making a push into the enemy's base and got focused, then you hear the word "Your base is under attack" and you saw 4 kirovs just bombing the shit out of your base, without defences and troops able to fend them off because it's too late and you just stand there watching your base lies in ruin.
I agree with you mate i was playing an russian brutal and i was scouting when i suddenly saw 3 kirovs coming and only have a few rocketeers and tried to defend tho i lost its scary to see kirovs coming Dang i miss the Chrono commando saying "Little C4 knocking on your door"
That's what I liked in Kirovs in RA2. They force enemy to either go all in and dying to kirovs if going all in fails (Since you won't get proper AA on leftover resourses) or go ham with anti-air, opening yourself up for being mobbed down by more conventional forces. Enemy had to keep it in mind even if you haven't built one. Then came Yuri revenge, which brought Yuri with gattling tanks, which tear infantry, light vehicles and air apart. Which forces you to either gamble with Ore harvester charge or postpone your attack to gather armor (And at that point Yuri will have a mind about you). As if yuri acolytes weren't OP enough. And then the RA3. Where Kirov is a unit, not THE unit.
Yikes that was an old match. I never knew you could kill kirovs with a spy like that, that's crazy! Iron Curtain Kirovs or dreadnoughts and then speed boost is great.
Since it's a high tier unit I'd say it's mostly up to them being hard to get to. I'd bet kirovs get usable as soon as the cashflow is good and you can easily pop one into battle where, as you say, the ennemy lacks some AA to wreak havock.
I didn't know Kirov's speed boost reveals them instantly to enemies. Good thing I always use them at the last second, as close as possible to the enemy before they're detected or attacked by AA
Imma try to set up a forward base operation and unleashe an iron curtained kirov. See how much destruction it will cause with the cheapest means Update: It is an unlikely thing to pull off and relying on it for the win is not an option. From my experiment, I tried to get as close to the enemy's base as possible. That took a significant amount of effort and resources to pull off. Right off the bat, it is an expensive campaign. Even if I'm only meters away from the enemy's base, launching an iron curtained kirov is impossible because it will ran out of protection before its even on top of the enemy. And another thing that I found out is that trying to speed up the kirov by using its afterburner will damage the ship regardless of the iron curtain. The only useful situation where this tactic can be used is either as a temporary shield for the frontline troops or as a means to scare your opponent. That being said. Its not worth it.
Huh. This video was uploaded this year? Nice to see people are still into this game! I´ve played this since it came out! So this video ain´t exactly "useful" for a veteran like me but still fun to watch!
I wished their "Afterburner" special ability would be replaced with a 120mm artillery cannon so they can take on mobile targets not under their bomb bay doors. would have dealt half the damage of a Kirov bomb with the advantage being it can eliminate targets within their sight range without necessarily endanger them to AA heavy fire. What do y'all think? Would it be too broken or just right?
Jesus christ 4:30 is a nightmare fuel for the soviets if the orbital starts throwing kirovs towards your base with its insane base damage upon its death.
Something irrelevant to this video. How can a single conscript drive a mirage tank after its driver died by Natasha's special ability. Also if soviets get an Athena cannon how are they able to shoot since they don't have any orbital satellites with that ability. And don't let me get started on production facilities. Where does all the infantry and drivers come from. I have seen no driver enter a production facility
Are you informed that this is a game? I would assume the athena tank sends strike coordinates with the laser and the laser just strikes. You do not need an own satellite
"How can a single conscript drive a mirage tank" I think a better one to look at is "How can a single engineer pilot an aircraft carrier after it has been sniped by Natasha's special ability.
Natasha's ability works in a bullshit way. She can snipe aircraft carriers so do not bother it. Athena cannon thing however could be explained, it just laser points the target and makes the satellite strike on it. Soviets with hammer tanks' leech technology or captured Athena cannons just use Allied orbital systems via through captured Allied ground control equipment.
Infiltrating a Battle Lab will crash your Kirovs Kirovs can be sucked up with Ultra Magnetic Satellite Kirovs can be Iron Curtained Been playing this game for a decade and did not know that. RA3 gets a lot of flak (hehe) for not being RA2, but I'm still learning new things about it to this day.
Infiltrating someone's lab disables all of their Tier 3 units. In Kirovs & Century Bombers' case, disabling them means they drop straight down (even if Century Bombers are landed).

And this is if you do not take into account that the "Kirovs" rarely crawl alone. pretty sure they're based on some (mostly American, actually) plans for nuclear-powered flying aircraft carriers
As someone said If there no Kirov there is no Red Alert3
Also ironically the most prolific user of air ships has actually been the US. Because the US controls close to 70% of helium reserves. Despite their vast territory the USSR didn't have any substantial helium reserves.
@MrMarinus18 the RA2 lore accounts for this. They are filled with hydrogen, which is why they deal so much damage when they crash.

You : iron curtain Kirovs
5 seconds later: FBI open up! You are accused of using illegal weapons!
Both in RA2 and RA3, Kirovs are rarely ever used in online matches unless your opponent blatantly disregards his anti-air builds.
Since it's a high tier unit I'd say it's mostly up to them being hard to get to. I'd bet kirovs get usable as soon as the cashflow is good and you can easily pop one into battle where, as you say, the ennemy lacks some AA to wreak havock.
