    Another thing to help new hunters just starting or veteran hunters. I hunt California and I have used this same technique in Oklahoma. I look for water sources, orchards, power lines and fences that cross open fields next to those sources. And always pay attention to the direction most your birds start in the morning. Come evening hunt it will for most part be the opposite. I always go out the day before opening morning and just watch look for that flite pattern and find like sage brush and pile it up make a cover along fences I see them land on or a power line I see them coming to or wanting to land on. I have found out hunting near orchards they tend to come in and out of the corners more or fly the edges before making there turn or fly over. Best of luck to everyone this Saturday for our national holiday of family friends fun day. Don’t forget to take that youngster out never to young watch or even fetch.

      David Rogers Or just show up at a local dove shoot & politely ask the sportsmen if they will give you some birds. This will save ammo AND time. Genuine hunters are notoriously generous & may even help you clean the birds they give you. In all cases that I’m aware of, hunters hunt for the thrill & challenge of shooting a bird on the wing out of the air. I know of no dove hunters who take to the field to simply try to obtain meals. I’m sure that this would be an easier & more economical method to obtain some meat without having to challenge yourself or gain any skill. But where’s the fun in that? I have more fun shooting a whole box of ammo & taking home 3 dove than shooting a whole box of ammo at birds sitting on limbs & knocking down 25/25. I’d rather go to the county carny & pick up a plastic ‘duck’ in a water tank, read out the number on its bottom, & collect my ten cent ‘prize’! At least with that challenge you’re never sure exactly which trinket you’re gonna get! Lol!

    A lot of good tips. I hunted doves from 11 years old to 18 years old. When I was 12 I won a state final trap shoot. I got a invite to the youth nationals for 2 years in a row. But I couldn’t go. My dad, brother and I built a bird field every year. My last year I hunted I was 18. My son was born and got side tracked with life. I’ve not shot a 12g since then. I’m 37 now. But I Built a field back in august, just bought a nice over and under, I counted 400/500 birds estimated this morning. I’m skipping the first few days of open season. It’s a tradition to wait a few days and do a morning hunt. I’m planing on taking a 100 rounds to the local trap range this Saturday to knock the rust off. And I hunt on the 11th next Saturday. It’s the first time I’ve dove hunted in 19 years. Also my 19 year old son will be with me on his first ever dove hunt. He his a great shot with a rifle and hand gun. So he’s been talking smack about waxing the old man. He don’t know I’m hitting the trap range on the 4th. Lol. It’s going to be a good time. Will be me, my dad, my mom, my brother, my niece, my son, and my sister in law. We are having a big cook out and cold beers after the hunt. I’m looking forward to it!!

    This is one of the best how to videos for dove hunting that I've watched so far. You kept it real. You weren't showing off all these doves you killed to your viewers. You kept it simple so that new hunters could follow your advice and build upon that experience. One more thing. You covered the subject of losing birds. No one on these other videos that I have so far seen covers this very important subject. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us. Very generous of you.

    Terrific lecture. I would have paid money to hear it. Sir, you nailed most of the important concepts I have encountered. The punch that hit me hardest was the part about positioning yourself for the optimal shot and avoiding the temptation to take the sub-optimal shot, like the going away shot. I just returned from an hour in the field with my chocolate lab Lily. I took a box of shells out along with a loaded gun (28 shells for those scoring at home), and brought back 8 birds when I shoulda had a limit. I truly appreciate your advice.

    When I down a bird, I walk straight to where I saw it go down. If I don't see it immediately, I drop my hat on the spot where I felt I saw it fall. Then I walk in ever-widening circles around the hat until I locate it. Haven't lost one since.

    Great vid and explanation. One that I struggle with and makes or breaks my hunt is to shoulder the gun correctly. When I’m on, I take the extra split second to make sure I am looking FLAT down the rib to the bead and THEN hone in on the bird. This helps me shoot at the bird, not above or below.

    One of the best dove hunting tips for finding birds after you drop them is this: drop a red bandana at the spot you think the bird went down. This will mark the spot so you can search the area or shoot more birds then return and keep looking. I have recovered numerous birds over the years that would otherwise have been lost by using this tip.

      One of the first hunting tips my dad provided was to carry a couple of washers with orange surveyors flagging attached. After the shot if it's likely a tough one to find don't take your eyes off the spot and drop the market where you think it went down

  • @dcraven67
    @dcraven67 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good tips. One I'd add, most hunt a field in the shade from a spot that looks down the rows. I found when hunting fields where the farmer cuts lanes that hunting from the side allows when birds land in the middle to walk up on them and get within 10-15 yards vs. the other where the birds flush 40+ yards out because I have no cover. Hopefully there's enough birds flying you don't have to resort to it but when they've become sparse I start stalking or walking the field to get jump shots. Practice on clays prior to opening day pays off.

    Great tips for the hunter who is making some common mistakes. I really enjoy dove hunting although the hardest part of shooting doves in northeast PA is waiting for the season to begin. Typically the local farmers have already harvested their wheat and other crops besides corn or soybean at least a month prior to September 1st. That being said, come september 1st the population of doves decrease by nearly 80% as they have already moved on in search of other food sources or migratory purposes. I live right on the edge of a 60+ acre farm and by the second week of august they harvested the wheat. Had the season started in august i probably could've shot my limit each day. Also the MOJO decoys are no joke, they work flawlessly in my opinion although its best to set them up correctly as you mentioned. I believe i read that doves will land and take off against the wind.

  • @jonathantate8103
    @jonathantate8103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Something I see a lot is people either standing upright in the middle of a field, or sitting right at the woodline on the edge. Birds do tend to fly on the edges a lot, but they tuck back in the trees when they see you, or start taking fire. I would say look for some less invasive cover than trees if at all possible. I'll use an example from my hunt yesterday. I picked out a spot about 40 yards from the treeline right next to a telephone pole, and shaded by a small bush with very few leaves on it. The guys on both sides of me sat very close to the treeline, and they had more birds come close to them, but getting shots off is tricky. I managed to bag out before almost anybody else on my corner of the field.

    Crossing shots, I enjoy them but I was once a AA trap and skeet shooter. These days I keep my shots at 25 to 35 yards and only shoot one at a time. Doubles and triples are great but I tend to lose them. When we had a great dog it didn't matter but with a crappy dog or no dog it matters a lot. Most my areas are wide open so no cover. Kneeling and staying still works very well.

    Buddy, I'm 63 years old and I'm still only averaging 3 to 4 Doves per box of shells! Ha ha ha ha ha. Doves make me crazy and I know I commit every single mistake you mentioned. Here in Idaho, we usually only get a few days before they are gone because we get a cold snap. So, I usually only limit myself to one bag limit per year. It's still fun. Like you say, other upland birds are fine, but doves, Oh Boy. Still, I love it. thanks for the pointers.

Also, on other game birds, we're deadly. Probably because they don't fly at 60 miles per hour and are bigger than the two thumb sizes we are shooting at with doves.

    These are great tips. Quick question, why are you in camo? I was always told to wear brighter colors when you are bird hunting so you can be better seen. A lot of guided dove/pheasant hunts actually require you to wear orange. I’m not criticizing, I’m just asking. Love the video and thanks for the tips.

    • @AdventureOne
      @AdventureOne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Migratory birds have amazing eye sight. Camo is almost always worn when hunting ducks, geese and doves. For ground birds like quail and pheasant, camo is not necessary, so many wear orange for safety, even where it is not legally required.

    2nd, if you have birds, use the Mojo.
    3rd, do a pace count that way you know how far your are shooting.
    4th, don’t move around a lot until it’s in range.

    The number one thing in dove hunting as with other types of hunting is that you stay still. Stay still, but when you spot a bird, do not move. More specifically, do not move your head. Wait until the birds in your shot range then move quickly into shooting position, point and shoot. No offense , but a large hat is much more visible in head movement than a smaller brimmed hat. My next best tip is, do not stand between two crack shots. You may never take the safety off your gun!

    • @AdventureOne
      @AdventureOne  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Being still is very important. I agree with you on everything except the hat. My bright white face stands out more than a camo hat, so the more coverage I can get, the better. Especially in the TX sun. This is just for camo though a large cowboy hat would be an awful choice.

    • @docglock1932
      @docglock1932 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since you are an experienced Hunter, I would suggest multiplying that enjoyment by 20! Get a good dog, trained or trained by you with help, and you will not lose birds. Or so you don't get overheated because you're not walking and you can keep your eyes in the field much better. You'd be surprised how many friends you make in the field because they want your dog to find their bird! That has been my greatest joy over the years, watching my dog finding and returning birds....... ducks, dove and quail ( yes my dog went with me on quail hunts and retrieved the birds)

    I never shoot past 40 yards. 90% of folks shoot behind a crossing dove. It's pretty simple guys. A dove coming at you, aim for it's beak. Going away aim at it's feet. In other words aim where the dove will be when your shot gets there. Never use a full choke either. Use proper shells, not Walmart Promo loads. I use 1 1/4 of 7 1/2 at around 1,250 fps.

      A week and a half in to season a full choke is sometimes a must have. Dove at 65-75 yards up are hard to take down with a mod choke.

      ebladi21. That is a CONDOR (brand) chest harness and Battle Belt. It's usually used for a tactical set up used by military guys or air-softers'. You can purchase individual pieces online from many tactical supply sources but I wouldn't trust Amazon. Tactical Gear .com and Tactical Assault Gear .com are good online places to buy CONDOR products as well as GMS Tactical .com and if you want the the best gear available online shop SKDTAC .com. A good kit set-up like the one shown here is: A Battle Belt (HSG or the VTAC brand BROKOS Belt NOT the 5.11 brand VTAC BROKOS battle belt. Spend the money on the battle belt and a 1.75" belt insert and go with with the Cobra buckle and GET the quality) with a Cobra Belt (like the HSG brand) or a belt with an Fastex Buckle (cheaper and not as durable), Chest Harness and Dump-pouches (buy 3 of them. One for loaded shells, one for fired shells and one for birds). I hope this helps.

      Glad you already know this stuff, but it is not so obvious to a lot of people, who are making some basic mistakes and need some pointers. There are a lot of folks just getting into hunting right now.

    • @pb303solopatriot4
      @pb303solopatriot4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once again obvious... you should be explaining shooting techniques and tactics. For example if a bird is flying away to shoot under the bird and how to lead the bird when shooting and etc. not Worrying about your camo
