Been watching for years. My wife caught this video today for the first time and said “holy shit, it’s Leonardo DiCaprio.” I thought for a bit and agreed 😂
Many years ago, I had a boyfriend that was the luckiest mechanic in the world. He would find cars that had been abandoned because they weren't worth fixing. He would quickly realize the problem wasn't near as bad as they thought and he would have it running in no time. He would be given, or find, random and unique parts that seemed like junk at first but would end up fitting a vehicle in need. He was always in the right place at the right time and always seemed to have, or find the right part. One time an elderly woman rolled in right before closing time with all kinds of chaos coming out from under the hood. She was scared to death! It was just a hose and he just happened to have the right one for her car laying on the hood of another car. He always amazed me.
This kinda reminds me of when you worked in the scrapper yard and brought back car and trucks that just needed some help to be back on the road. Enjpyed the video.
@@amandastyles-uh6zx Yeah it amazed me when people would bring in things to scrap and all it needed was a simple part. Or gramma died and the kids didnt want grammas old buick, other than it being old, it was mint. Though to be fair, he did work on some real junkyard wars projects and frankensteined some back together. But thats what we loved about the channel.
Jay, If Subaru's could talk, this one would be thanking you from the bottom of its heart for giving it a new life. I never would have thought a completely different engine would have fit in. It's been a real pleasure watching you solve this Outback's problems, one step at a time.- Thomas
I would use a carpet extractor on the floor and seats. Mold is probably deep within the seat fabric and if breathed in can be toxic but I'm sure you already know that. Keep up the good work man, and stay cool
I'm Scottish and we know how to banter however, your banter is on point. The rant in the car about Methany and the 'essence of roach' had me howling. I just discovered your channel the other day when it popped up after watching an episode of Junkyard Digs. Subbed. 😊
I have a 08 Subaru Impreza that refuses to die, they’re great beater vehicles and the engines are really easy to maintain if you have the know-how/shop.
Bro, you’ve got a platform and an audience and you barely upload. This platform you’ve created (I’ve been following for years) can earn you fantastic money whilst doing what you love to do with cars as long as you stay consistent. I wish I had your audience brother, I’d be going 120% all day everyday!
A fine car it is... I owned a 06 Outback with the 3.0 Flat 6 which was a gorgeous engine for the car, not quite as fast as the 2.5 T but the sound makes goosebumps...
Just came across your channel today. I'll be sticking around. You actually know what your doing unlike some other channels. Looking forward to the next video.
Idk why so many hate on the Chinese fuel pumps! 😂 I got mine off Amazon for $46 when auto parts places wanted $400-$600 for it. 2008 Toyota Yaris 1.5l fuel pump went out at exactly 100k miles And it’s at 135k now no issues with that pump! The only thing I have noticed is I burn a little more gas then I used to. Come to find out the new pumps pressure is higher then the old one so it’s pumping more gas into the engine but not enough for it to throw a CEL light for too lean or rich code so it’s still in spec I’m guessing. So instead of 440 miles to 10.6 gal tank I’m getting 380 miles to 10.6 gal tank But I still saved $$$ on pump and filter combo
Love that generation of outbacks! I’m not sure what I would do if I got one for free. Definitely would keep it forever haha those interiors clean up really good! Has the better quality carpet.
Considering it was originally a 2.5...the Auto-box-Gearing...could have Longer Ratio'd Gears....designed for the considerably bigger original engine....so bear that in mind if you think theres a slowness....it could just be an Engine to Trans Ratio...if it is a different Trans.
These are my favorite cars to work on. Engines in these are pretty easy to swap and there is plenty parts available (i live in Colorado). Awesome to see you bring it back. Looks like a clean little car and definitely deserved the love

Thought you were Leanardo Dicaprio for a minute there. I have a 2015 Outback. Love it so far. That will make someone a nice car when you get it finished.
I have a manual 2.5 2007 Outback. Had some mechanical issues, but it starts no matter what, even in -24°F weather. Is an oil burner despite low miles. Worn piston rings. I love the car though and find it worthy of fixing. I think it’s a lot of fun to drive, is a beast in the snow and off-road. I love the heated seats and power seat, windows and locks, heated mirrors and heated area where the wipers are. Great stereo. I’ve cold AC. Can haul stuff, I think it’s such an awesome platform. I made Reflectix window covering to camp in it.
Great stuff Jay! Thank you. Worked for a independent import shop when I was younger. We replaced many Honda and Toyota cars with Japan take outs. These cars are worth it because if taken care of last for years and we saw where handed down in families with new drivers instead of buying new cars. Many with 300k plus.
LED headlights on that generation of Subaru make the lighting system act all funky. Normal halogen bulbs work best. I had to remove a set of LED lights from my 2004 forester and switch back to halogens for that very reason.
This is like my subaru, except mine is the 2.5xt, these are absolute great cars if you maintain them! I highly recommend you get this one back on the road these are great cars!
Hey Jay Fantastic. You’re the GOAT. I did the same to my Moms tired Sub years back. Those engines are a bargain. Hers is still going strong 80K miles later. I’ve done a couple Toyotas also that put new life back for a budget result. Peace
Save that A/C compressor if you rebuild. EJ25 A/C compressors are close to 400-500 dollars USED (if working). EDIT Omg, I just noticed who you are lol. I remember watching your videos in the junkyard 7 or 8 years ago!
"A loud ass Duramax"... Welcome to Texas! On the headlights, use some Mothers metal polish with a polishing pad in your drill. Cleans them up real nice.
The standard US 2.5 are really expensive in my area. Like… over double what this engine cost. I learned about the Japanese imported engines some time ago and had wanted to try one out for myself. Simple to replace (unless you’re fighting a car that’s sat for years lol) They import all kinds of Japanese brand car engines to the US. Claiming that the laws and rules are strict on cars over 60k miles there.
@@MXguy95 that’s good to know- I have heard the same thing that Japan is very strict on age and mileage of engines. I agree, I have had a couple of Outbacks and the 2.5s are wayyy overpriced IMO. It was cool to see how well the 2.0 swapped in. I was actually looking at a 75k JDM engine on eBay for my 03 Accord. They’re really well priced! Side note- I’ve been watching your videos for years and you seem to have gotten a lot more mechanical as time has passed. Keep up the great work man!
DUDE ! I just stumbled across your channel because I'm on my 4th Subaru. A black one like this. A Legacy wagon , not an Outback. Then I saw you ... what is DiCaprio doing wrenching on a Subee !!! You've got to stop getting your hands dirty and straining your back! Get yourself an agent! Maybe you can get work as an impersonator or maybe a body double for Leonardo in public. Or in actual movies ! 😊😊
Incredible that you assembled that whole dang engine...one manned...and got her running sweet!....Maybe consider getting that blue Vented Hood from the breakers yard...that painted black would look more Sporty & Aggressive....plus the one on currently looks badly corroded at the bottom rim...Good job dude!
Looks good to me! I think you did yeoman's work on this one Jay. Hats off to you! 🎩 I'd leave it like it is as far as the wheels go, but that's just me. Another successful rescue
It seems like if you're dealing with cars that have been sitting idle for months or even years, it's worth it to put the fuel lines through some kind of cleaning process. I'm not a professional mechanic, but I've seen a number of videos where gunk in the system has caused the restoration to halt to a stop. Especially with older carbureted motors.
I stay to the end watching your struggle and joy after all your accomplishments…Thats a lovely station wagon Jay. I never been into Subaru but I cannot denied they look very nice and the boxer engine sounds sweet. Greetings from Florida (your t-shirt says Deerfield beach😅)I will be waiting the second part.🤓
That looks like an awesome car to flip. When everything is done I'd bet you can get $7. to $10 K for it. The cvt transmissions are not very good. They're set up to not rebuild them. You're stuck with used just like the motor was.
Nice ! Subaru’s are my favourite winter vehicles.. I have 3 foresters and a 05 limited outback.. they get the same MPG on the highway as my 03 Town Car !

gonna need the Hoover Max Extract Pressure Pro Model 60 for that one

Great approach to the rebuild, enjoyed it. "If roach had a smell", lol.
Not the “Harley Quinns cracked out cousin” joke 😂
Rocker cover gasket leaks cause oil on exhaust, it's a common issue. Great fix, by the way.
That's a great find! You're right, Jay, this one's worth a new engine, considering it's pretty much in great overall condition.

I've only heard very positive things bout Subaru's. My wife had one for a couple yrs when we was dating and I loved it.
My aunt has a Subaru had since 2008, been through 3 accidents and a timing belt. It's like a cockroach. It can't be killed.
Seems like there's two types of Subarus
The ones that refuse to die. And the ones that blow up at 75k one day after the power train warranty expires
