After trying to convert the GT2 into a gear rack for my laser engraver, I found out the this idea has flaw that come with the straight teeth on the timing belt and pulley. The straight teeth are not smooth and have gap when transiting from one tooth to the other, this creates a period when the axis move faster or slower which in turn makes the laser burns a bit more or less and create some lines in the final images.
This converting timing belt into gear rack solution only works if using helical tooth belt and corresponding pulley. The alternative is to use 2 stepper motor with 2 pulley on the same gear rack. The distance of the pulley should be a not round multiple of the pitch. For example in the case of the GT2 belt, the pitch is 2mm, the distance should be ((a number+0.5)*2mm pitch = ) something like 41 or 43mm.
I don't have the budget for this solution for the moment so I just go back to the traditional way to install the GT2 belt by wrapping the belt around the pulley. The final results are as expected, the engraving came out correctly with lines in any direction.

Good diagnostic Minh! and cheap fix as well.

My 50w laser had that and it is called Curtains. A lot of laser machines have it and all of them are belts looped over the pulley (iow not a rack and pinion) but Russ Sadler fixed this years ago and I made his contraption for my machine.

You definitely have more experience on this, I don't even know the terms. It seemed to went away on mine with the belt wrapping setup. Maybe my laser is so crappy that it is not clear enough to see. The more I get into this laser engraving thing, the more power I wanted. I envy your 50w laser, lol. Hopefully I can buy or build a CO2 laser in the future.

Well, this only really begins to show its ugly face when doing engraving and if your machine is bad enough it is not easy to get rid of. What needs to be done is the the belt's smooth side on everything except the pulley which is, in essence, turning the belt into a rack and pinion setup. Very hard to explain without a picture but the belt's teeth only ever touches the gear and the smooth side is what touches everything else.

th-cam.com/video/B87ifTPKN8c/w-d-xo.html This will explain a lot and in my instance I had to make something a bit different as I didn't have the room he has but 3d printing in ABS saved the day.
