    Decades ago I fell in love with a co-workers’ handwriting. I started copying it and, after a year, it was hard to tell our handwriting apart. Unfortunately, she turned out to be embezzling money from the company. I knew nothing about this drama at the time. But I learned later that when she was accused by management of her crimes, she calmly told them that was my handwriting, not hers. Fortunately for me, she had been embezzling for three years before I started working for the company and management knew I was not involved in the crime. I learned the value of keeping my individual handwriting style unique to me. That doesn’t mean I haven’t changed my lettering styles over-the-years, I have. But I now value keeping the flavor of my own individual style when making slight changes/improvements to my lettering. 🙂

    I almost spit out my coffee with the line "We're grownups, we can write however the f*%k we want to." That is just so great. Cindy you made my morning. I love your lettering and I am inspired every time I watch one of your videos!

    I had the exact same experience with the letter a. I trained myself to write it the other way but eventually I reverted back because it was just too much. It wasn’t practical if you wanted to write quickly but I always liked how it looked.

    When I was younger, I **FAILED** the handwriting part of school. It pissed me off so much that I spent the whole entirety of summer to make my handwriting nicer. My step-mom has this amazing handwriting, so I was basically learning to copy it. Now, my handwriting is so much like hers, people can't tell the difference between the two of us sometimes. Only ones who can really tell are immediate family (aka our spouses ... my dad and my husband LOL)

    I remember when I was younger my teachers would complain about my z’s and 2’s looking similar (primarily in algebra) so I had to change my handwriting. It was so freaking difficult and took a while but I did it. I can relate to the frustration of retraining muscle memory.
    Love your videos, and how real you are!

    Cursive lettering, I would get so worked up about penmanship in school and would ride everyone to take the extra effort to hit the lines so our class would win that blue ribbon every time. In the fifth grade I volunteered to give up my recess and help the third grade teacher go over his pupils handwriting. I get complimented on my writing, but I have never been truly happy with it that is until this year. Writing Zen just might be within my reach! Thanks a million. You really help me relax about little sh!_ details.

    I switched my a to the second one when I was around fourteen. I can't remember why - a friend's handwriting, maybe - but it stuck and I can't switch back, unless I force it.

  • @Bolderbon

    I actually did this many years ago! I loved the way that a looked as well, so I just kept on writing it until it came natural. Now, I have issues with it since I've been trying hand lettering, and that "a" doesn't have a natural flow. I'm working on it though. Loved this! xoxo Bonnie

  • @annamacra581
    @annamacra581 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually your example of changing the "a" was one of the things I did to my writing. For me changing my letters or printing is really easy and the change is quick. I guess my hands get the motion change down really fast. I also never really have to slow down when I write with a new letter font. I mean I changed my letters in less than a hour and I wrote the way I wanted without error fluently. Although, I never feel happy with my printing and I've changed my whole alphabet font at least 15 times over the span of 10 months. I try to stick with the font I write with now as I am mostly pleased with it but to me the printing of other people always looks better. Tears.

    I'm really wanting to change my handwriting a bit so it looks nicer in my bujo, but I can't figure out how I want it all to look and what goes well together.
    I worked on practicing my hand lettering all through January as my self improvement focus of the month so my headers look nicer, but now my headers and my regular handwriting clash 😂

    I switched to the second a when i was around 13-14. I really liked my moms handwriting and decided to change mine. Now I can't write the first type of a unless i'm writing it in math formulas, there it comes naturally, and I have no idea why I switch back just for that specific thing xD

    in fifth grade, around the time i first started to regularily use mechanical pencils, i went to put the dot above the "i" but for some reason it was just the most perfect little circle, and I tried to fill it in, but for some reasom, I couldn't. then i thought, "Well. This is how i'm going to write my "i"s now

    Hi Cindy, since my teens I have mixed up letters as I have been writing, for example, I use both examples of your 'a's" as I go. It just seems to switch back and forth. Also, I switch back and forth when I am writing in cursive. I am a teacher, and they don't teach kids cursive anymore, so when I start writing cursive in the middle of something, that really messes them up.HA! So what do you think? psychological problems or poltergeist?

    • @DScritchy
      @DScritchy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lesa P I'm curious. If they dont teach cursive anymore (which I sort of get... I was taught but prefer printing), do they just teach it for signing names? Or not at all?

    • @lesap8889
      @lesap8889 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In the state of Florida and a few other places I know, there is no cursive teaching at all. My 22-year-old twins needed to copy their names from me on their Social Security cards and were very careful on their Drivers Licenses, and passports. BTW one of these children just graduated Summa Cum Laude and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Not one of her high school or college class notes were written in cursive!

    I love your typographic a's and g's and just stealing those two letters and slowing down has made my writing look so much more pulled together. One other thing I've found helps make that "a" work is to raise the height of all my half-height letters (called x-height, for font geeks). I started doing that just so my a's would fit, but I also find it gives my handwriting some personality.

  • @pittbully4765
    @pittbully4765 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've never done this method. I just change it as much as I can in my school assignments. I have changed my 'a' countless number of times, I've changed my 'y' and 'f' a few times. I've also changed my 'z' and 'x'. Actually, this has happened too many times so I'll make a list for the rest: t, l, w, q, o, v, s, k, r, i, and j.

    One of my superamazing talents is upgrading fonts, it started with the echo of my sister calling my handwriting ugly
    (/〇\). Now I know that even though it looks ugly to some, I like it and it is pretty. Now the saddest part is that handwriting is one of my best fields, uu-u-u-ughh

    Ive done historical calligraphy for over 30 years as a hobby. My calligraphy got better, but my normal handwriting worse. It's all in how fast I write, and how I hold the pen. You must hold a calligraphy pen properly, but as a kid I learned to write resting the pencil on my ring finger.

    I love the feeling of writing, of typing, playing piano, cutting hair, the tactile experience and seeing/feeling improvements. Two years ago a slip and fall accident required the use of my non-dominant hand for everything... took a lot more patience learning how use a toothbrush, writing, hairbrush...eveyday habits took on a whole new perspective getting my brain to do things opposite...i.learned to write and print like a kindergaartener...kind of fun at times...esp with big colored pencils... art journaling became my physical therapy... and relearning to write yet again with the dominant hand was interesting. One letter at a time people...no shit sherlock...
