    Having a Dutch wife, and now living in t'Netherlands, I can vouch for how excellent it is here. Especially as I come from the grim SE of England where the car is king. The standard of living is so much better and for a cyclist it is heaven. The rest of the world needs to take note before the car gridlocks the entire planet.

    I want to thank you so much for all that you do! I found your channel earlier this year which encouraged me to buy a bike and cycle to work as often as possible. Now I cycle to run neighborhood errands and it's so much fun! I wish my city were as cycle friendly as the Netherlands but I'm determined to lead by example to instill change. Here's to another year!

      ekpennock Yeah people tend to not know how much fun and relaxing cycling is to do. It has such a positive effecr on ones wellbeing. Especially when you take your bike shopping. The bike carries your stuff, you are more flexible on a bike and its way cheaper. I cycled all my life but couldn't for a couple of months (I got run over by a car...dumb accident) and I felt like someone amputated a leg or something. Once you start cycling it gets part of your life and you won't want to be without.

      Maaike R I’ve lived in Ireland the last three years, and the thing I’m looking forward to the most when I’ll come back in May, is flat surfaces, bicycles lanes and cycling 😁 Just 6 more weeks to go! Didn’t know I was going to miss it that much.

    I spent 3 months this summer in the Netherlands. First day - 27th of april - day of king what can I say more.
    The Netherlands is an amazing place - you won't regret if you give it a go. The infrastructure is more than perfect. I rented a bike and cycled to Germany and Belgium. I lived in Susteren near Sittar-Geleen. It was a great experience. This channel brings back a lot of great memories

    I'm an American happy to be living and cycling in the Netherlands for 5 years now. My own cycling highlight of 2017 was using my OV Fiets subscription. Basically the train company has decent bikes you can rent with your public transit cards. Super convenient to travel by train to a meeting, or whatever, and explore the local bike infrastructure :)

    I'm coming to NL this year for the first time. Have been a commuter, utility and racing bike rider since the 80s and always 'on road'(sans helmet). Want to experience 'Dutch' cycling and try to get my local authority to get their head around cycling infrastructure as an important aspect of our small town.

      Is het mogelijk om daar veilig te fietsen ? Ik zou persoonlijk nooit uit Nederland kunnen emigreren omdat woon- werkverkeer met de fiets een hele fijne levensstijl is. Sommigen zeggen pas dat je merkt hoe goed het eigenlijk wel niet is in Nederland, als je verhuisd bent naar een land waar de auto de enige optie qua vervoersmiddel is en je daardoor in principe minder vrijheid hebt.

    • @marcg.3333
      @marcg.3333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Waar ik woon in het zuiden en niet in een grote stad is het niet echt veilig om te fietsen. Bijna niemand fiets hier zoals in Nederland. Alleen kinderen mischien alleen in de straat en volwassenen als sport. Dit is een enorm groot land. Ik kan moeilijk zeggen waar het anders is. Wat ik hoor is dat Seatlle een stuk toegankelijker is dan de rest van het land. De infra in Nederland is bijna niet te vergelijken met andere landen denk ik maar dat is nattuurlijk niet de enige reden om voor een ander land te kiezen, Amerika heeft namelijk ook veel andere dingen te bieden. De hoeveelheid ruimte en natuur, landschap, bergen, buiten sporten bijvoorbeeld. Je kan in beiden landen goed leven hoor. Het hangt gewoon af van je eigen voorkeur (Ik heb ook een Amerikaanse vrouw) . Ik denk wel in het algmeen dat een hoop Nederlands mischien niet goed begruipen hoe goed ze het hebben met een hoop dingen. Groeten!

    You should make a visit to Den Haag HS. This, in my opinion, is the most dangerous crossing in the entire Randstad. There is a very busy intersection of pedestrians, bikes, 2 tram lanes, and cars, with bikes and pedestrians having the option to go left or straight. The tram stop was recently under complete redesign. They completely let the opportunity pass and changed nothing. So confusing.

    I am so jealous.
    My cycling commute to work includes a section of dual-carriageway where the speed limit is 70mph (110kph) and there is *no* separate cycling lane. Yes - I share the road with vehicles going that fast!

    • @WXGA17
      @WXGA17 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chap666ish Cars driving past you with 110 km/h ? That can't be legal, there has to be an alternative cycling road in the vicinity. Perhaps you have missed it, maybe look on Google Maps? I do not believe this.

    • @chap666ish
      @chap666ish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      110kph = 70mph which is the National Speed Limit in the UK on dual carriageways. So, yes, perfectly legal.
      There are no "cycling" roads here at all but there are some shared-use paths (bikes + pedestrians) which are useless for commuting unless you like riding at walking speed.
      Do you have any more advice for me? Given that you know nothing about me and even less about where I live I'm just dying to hear your opinion.

    • @WXGA17
      @WXGA17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remon Deze situatie komt in het buitenland regelmatig voor. Ik heb eens tussen Vlissingen via Retranchement (Nederland) en Knokke (Vlaanderen) ook eens mogen meemaken hoe het is om op een kruispunt van twee 90 km/h vierbaanswegen met verkeerslichten te staan. Kinderspel is dit wanneer je beseft dat buiten Nederland, Duitsland en Denemarken het nog doodnormaal is te fietsen over de snelweg, maar dit vond ik doodeng. Vandaar dat iedereen onze infrastructuur fantastisch vindt.

    • @pieterfranke
      @pieterfranke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have two catgories of mopeds, with helmets (yellow plates, 45km) and witout helmets (blue plates, 25km) the yellow plates ride on the roads by the cars and the blue plates ride on the bike paths. The same goes for e-bikes and scooters, if the vehicle can go over 25kmph. they’ll have yellow number plates and are meant to ride on the car roads. Until it becomes a motorway of course! The yellow plates aren’t allowed on the bikepaths in general. The e-bikes are a big thing here nowadays and the positive thing about it is that elders can ride a bike again, where it used to be to hard for them to take it shopping, so they can be more selfsufficient and non depending. The bad thing about it is that you’ll see younger people riding e-bikes and getting less exersise.

    In Canada, many commercial properties or stores have multiple entrances and exits for vehicles that spill out onto the main street, which I find disrupts traffic and creates a design challenge for cycling infrastructure. In the Netherlands, how do they typically design around commercial properties with high vehicle traffic and accessibility while providing a safe cycling option?

Why should they invent the wheel twice when we can learn from one another? I liked the different cycle bridges. In Zwolle they try to be more artistic so infront of the theatre building they have an artsy cycle bridge...it looks great but its weird to cycle on.

    What is the scooter protest about? Why shouldn't a scooter use the cycle way?

    • @SamyasaSwi
      @SamyasaSwi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A couple of years ago it was decided scooters should use the regular car roads instead of the cycling ways. Because as you can imagine, scooters are quite a bit quicker than bikes are, making them a hazard on the cycling paths. I was actually confused as to whether this decisions was retracted or not because I see scooters on the cycling paths quite often...

    • @difflocktwo
      @difflocktwo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samaya Does a scooter have a mind of its own? I'm sure a scooter will travel only as fast as commanded by the pilot. A human powered bike broke a record at 130 kph on flat ground. Recumbents and velomobiles average pretty high speeds too.

    • @SamyasaSwi
      @SamyasaSwi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you under the impression casual cyclists travel 130 kmh on our cyclepaths?

    • @difflocktwo
      @difflocktwo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samaya Are we regulating the type of cyclist or the machine here? The ban was a machine ban. Should we ban athletic cyclists?
      A casual cyclist can achieve at least 50% for the world record with the same machine.

    • @SamyasaSwi
      @SamyasaSwi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The question isn't if cyclists can achieve a high speed, the question is whether they commonly do. And commonly speaking, cyclists go about 10-20 kmh, while I've yet to see scooters going that "slow" anywhere. High speed cyclists usually avoid dense and/or inner city cycling paths, and are mostly to be found in rural areas with much less cycling traffic. So it makes sense to ban the machine, rather than enforce a speed limit.
      And I'm not sure what your understanding of a "casual cyclist" is, but they certainly don't achieve speeds of 65 kmh.

  • @MickehPuppeh
    @MickehPuppeh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how basically everyone hates mopeds. Cyclists don't want them in the bike lane, motorists don't want them on the road. They're loud, smelly, terrible, too fast for the bike lane and too slow for the road.

      Om nog maar te zwijgen over massaal tegen het verkeer in rijden omdat het twee seconden tijd scheelt. Of op de stoep voor je donder gereden worden door fietsers die blijkbaar niet genoeg hebben aan een breed fietspad. Ze willen nog geen seconde hoeven wachten op elkaar en het wordt ze door al die verlaagde stoepen ook nog eens heel makkelijk gemaakt om overal te rijden waar ze willen. En vertel ze inderdaad vooral niet dat dit niet de bedoeling is, want het is hun recht dus val maar lekker dood. Oh ja, die heilige fietsers die niemand kwaad doen....

      reneglw Den Haag is dan ook een rampenplan om in te fietsen. Fietsstraten die geen fietsstraten zijn (een straat met rode klinkers en die uitpuilt van de auto's is geen fietsstraat), een shared space aanleggen die wel door fietsers gezien kan worden, maar niet door voetgangers, fietsverkeerslichten, autoverkeerslichten en tramverkeerslichten die soms allemaal NIET op elkaar zijn afgestemd en infrastructuur dat door idioten is ontworpen die er helemaal niks vanaf weten. Eén keer heb ik uit nieuwsgierigheid in Den Haag gefietst tijdens de spits. Wat een ramp. Twee keer bijna een aanrijding met een tram, zelfs bijna een keer een afdekongeval gehad (op de fiets!) en een auto die naar links ging en groen had, terwijl ik linksaf de straat inreed waar hij uitreed en ook groen had... Dit soort idioterie hoort in België thuis, niet in Nederland. Lokale Hagenezen konden ook niet rijden, maar dat is begrijpelijk wanneer de infrastructuur waar zij overheen rijden ook nergens op slaat.
      Verouderde infrastructuur is misschien mooi, zoals een stukje betonsnelweg voor de koningin, maar dit moet je absoluut niet willen gebruiken.

      Er moet in Nederland nou eenmaal een stad onderaan in de rechterkolom eindigen. Den Haag ligt het dichtst bij Engeland, dus dan is een degradatieplek op fietsvriendelijkheid wel te verwachten. Succes in de nacompetitie tegen Cambridge.

      Door al die diplomaten en politici die perse in het midden van de stad moeten parkeren.
