  • It's great to have John Woo thrilling audiences once again. In his latest and first American feature in a long while, he stirs up a little revenge. Silent Night tells the story of a father going after gang members who killed his young son. It's an intense ride, and one with nearly no dialogue. It also features an incredible performance from Joel Kinnaman in the leading role. The film also stars Kid Cudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. It's an intense flick, but with Mr. Woo running the show, that's to be expected.
We recently had the great honor of speaking to John Woo and Joel Kinnaman in person. And yet, having told Mr. Woo what an honor it was, he proved to be wonderfully down-to-Earth. The legend is as terrific to chat with as you could ever hope. John spoke about telling this grounded story, and the challenge of having little to no dialogue involved. As for Mr. Kinnaman, the actor talked about his own challenges and finding the role. As well, he happily talked about working with one of the greatest action filmmakers of all time.

I definitely did notice that John Woo was going for a more brutal, gritty approach with this one as well. It brings to mind his own film, Bullet In The Head, seems Woo was channeling that energy again. It's also good to see that Joel Kinnaman was legitimately enthusiastic about this project. Action Movies only work when the actor actually likes and appreciates the genre, which Joel clearly does.

I saw Silent Night in theaters, and despite it's barebones plot, I really enjoyed it.
Yeah, it seems like a formulaic revenge story, but I think it's a little more inventive than the Punisher or Max Payne. Like making Joel Kinnaman's character an average Joe who trains himself and learns to become a badass vigilante, rather than jut make him an ex-marine or burned out cop out for revenge. In my opinion it's like a raw superhero origin story.
I also like how Joel keeps it simple with his arsenal of weapons. Like instead of giving him an AR-15, AK-47 or uzi, he just goes into battle with a Beretta 92 and a pump action shotgun. Cause it makes the action more interesting, as his character likely isn't familiar with automatic weapons and has to make use with the tools he has.

The calming music playing in the background during the interview segments is entertaining. 😀
