  • Now playing in theaters and available on VOD tomorrow, The Holdovers is a touching comedy released by Focus Features where a curmudgeonly instructor (portrayed by Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school remains on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students that have nowhere to go. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, (played by Dominic Sessa) and with the school's head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.
Today on #JoBlo our chief editor Chris Bumbray had the honor of having a conversation with both #PaulGiamatti and #DominicSessa as they talk about filming the movie, the bond that the cast formed, working with director Alexander Payne and much more!

What works about this is that the characters are real; they don’t lapse into stereotypes; their nattering at each other is neither grating nor soppy. BUT the trailer is misleading-cuz you have grumpy teacher & bratty rebellious student. Excellent performances! Nice direction. Only teeny criticism is the occasional use of music overlay drowning out the characters when they ARE getting along. What ARE they saying? But that’s my little pet peeve. But you’re right: one of the year’s 10 best!
