@TH3D1SC0 Thanks. Yeah, it's a lot of fun. I just did a proper recording of it tonight. My technique still leaves a lot to be desired, but I wanted to give it a try anyway. I got a great Don Helms book (Hank Williams' pedal steel player) with 10 Hank tunes tabbed and a CD with him playing each song as well as a backing track. I can't wait to dig into that.
As an instrument engineer and builder for almost 60 years I am impressed with this (RLS-1) for the cost. The Chinese employ technology to the hilt. Their quality is somewhat variable but are usually minor issues easily corrected (strings & grounding in the RLS-1).
Actually, if you've only been playing this steel for an hour you're doing pretty good. I'm glad you chose a solid steel bar, plus I see you are already muting the strings behind the bar. This is very good. I recognize the song "Sleep Walk".
I just bought a Rogue RLS-1 in Metallic Red from Musician''s Friend on sale for $80 + tax (regularly $120), and 8 years later, it appears to be the exact same lap steel guitar (except for color, but they had the blue available, too), including the gig bag and legs. The 6th string was kinda "wonky", as the pitch would fall after picking it, but it would always start at the same original note. I have been playing guitar all my adult life, and I have NEVER seen anything like that. So, I bought new strings (D'Addario half-rounds, so they wouldn't be a noisy), a slide, and a set of finger picks. I have as much experience on a steel guitar as you do!, but you're doing much better than I would after an hour!! But with the new strings, it does seem to be a solid guitar. I do wish, however, that they had included an Allen wrench to adjust the bridge saddles., as they're not all the same height, and I need to set the intonation.
good video except I had to stare @ that Packer's sweatshirt while doing so. o just got a vintage lapsteel and hadn't tuned to c6 yet. listening to you is encouraging because you sounded pretty decent. cool plank btw.
I have the same instrument and it is great for learning on . In my Fender Studio 85 with a compressor and volume pedal it works well . There many c6 video lessons on line .Get an instruction book and enjoy . By the way, you are holding the bar incorrectly. Try finger picks, they help the sound .
Great video! Got mine a couple months ago and I love it so far. Kind of hard to find any material to learn from though (at least in the local stores). Your version of Sleepwalk sounds like mine haha.
I wonder if I could set my hofner shorty up for lap steel.. I suppose I could in a pinch. I dont really like playing that guitar since the balance is so wacky. You have to support the neck while playing which for something's is okay but for speedy technical stuff you really need to relax that fretting arm/hand
This body shape shows up under various names but doubtless all are knocked out by the same Chinese guys. Revelation seems to be the most expensive so far. There's not a lot to charge for though - it's a plank with wires on and that goes for Gibsons et al. I suppose the big names have better pick ups (again just wire wrapped round a bobbin) and machine heads... and that's about all there is to this instrument. What really surprised me was how Leo Fender morphed his lap steel into the Telecaster and got it dead right first time creating a guitar that has not be surpassed in 70 or so years -and he was not even a guitar player! I have an Artisan lap steel and to be honest it sounds amazing - got is second hand off Ebay. You might expect the pick up and pots to be indifferent quality but they are not and after all it's the amp that produces the sound. I have a cheap little practice amp I acquired from somewhere - 15G it's called? - and it sounds great through that unlike the rest of my guitars which need a Marshall or Peavey to sound good. These are amazing little instruments which can be easily upgraded if ever they need to be.
Just got mine today, $80. after their 20% off coupon I received via email from musicians friend. MF is awesome, no tax/free shipping. Anyway, this Rogue is what you described, pretty amazing value and quality beginner. Having trouble finding a decent tuning example here on the tube.
I recently watched a YT video that showed an EM7 tuning. I put my lap steel in that and it is a lot of fun. Any M7th tuning should work the same. I’ll have to try Sleepwalk in EM7.
You'll find more instructional materials using the C6th tuning. "Sleep Walk" can easily be played in C6th as well as many other styles of music. C6th: from high to low - E,C,A,G,E,C.
Packers fan aye!!! I’m planning to get the red metallic same brand It has a great tune. Btw do you need an amplifier to hear the sound or is it just best to get one
I am also impressed with the Rogue lap steel guitar. A friend just bought one.... I play acoustic and electric guitar but never tried slide until now and I sounded just like you did after playing for an hour. So I sound like a cat in heat so far...LOL... But I'm probably going to buy one of these too....It's too cool to leave alone....
Hello Im from Mexico City. I think this is the sound Im searching, I found other videos of the Rogue EA-3 lap Steel guitar but it sounds like country music, do you know the reason?? you can change the sound?? Im only interested in this hawaiian sound like Santo & Johnny the same you have, are many differnt pickups in the same model or you can make both sounds in the same guitar?. Your tunning is C E G A C E ?? thanks
Was it a bit scary tuning it to c6? Don't know if they felt like they're gonna break from being wound to tight or something. Getting the same one this week and just wondering P.S. - go Packers!!!!
I can relate to that feeling while trying to tune mine to C6.... I thought for sure that the string was going to snap on me, trying to reach the "A" note.
I recommend lowering the height of the lap steel than what is currently seen in the video. You'll have a much easier time playing! If anyone wants to see the same lap steel heavily modified and with video samples, check out my instagram: pedalguru89. Keep it up and don't listen to the people who are too scared to pick up a lap steel!
Hi Im from Mexico City. Im searching this sound of the lap steel, I found other videos of the same rogue EA-3 lap steel guitar but they sound like country music,, do you know why? Im only interested in the sound like yours, its exactly the sound of Santo & Johnny. Maybe the sound is because of the pickups. Could you help me to find lap steel like yours that could be send here to mexico city? I´ll apreciatte a lot. I have to be sure of the sound before buying Your tunning is C E G A C E? thanks
Santos & Johnny you ain't.....lmao....but I did recognize "Sleepwalk" in there somewhere. You're having fun and gaining experience and that's what counts....thanks for sharing.
I'm surprised someone hasn't made a SpongeBob joke , Our local VFW is Hunting a steel player to join the house band They've been having trouble getting everyone to leave at the end of the night I'm sure they'd let you play the last song. I thought you did great for the 1'st time.
Have lots of fun with that lap steel guitar! You might want to switch to a dobro-style slide/tone bar. That fat, round one you use in the video is meant for pedal steel guitars, where you don't lift the bar off the strings but use the pedals instead. See, e.g., th-cam.com/video/eEZ--_dVcoQ/w-d-xo.html.
the steel guitar is an instrument that takes years to even be considered "fair" playing it , this yokel hasn't even figured out how to take it out of the box yet ..therefore has no business even attempting to demonstrate anything

12 years later I pick up a rogue rs-1 (looks exactly the same to me) in order to play the same song. Of course 😂
Same here. I changed the pickup to a fender noiseless and it helped a lot

Great review sir, I bought a 2nd hand lapsteel guitar branded Artisan and hope to learn to play
hahaha that is the exact song I was gonna try sounding out first. Cool review, seems like a really good value
Cool
I just ordered one. I like the idea of playing a Steel guitar. Thank you for the demo. I ordered some new GHS 6 String Steels C6 tuning.
I just got my first lapsteel...lovely instrument...🥰...gotta feel it!!!

I just got mine a few days ago and it did include the Allen wrench. It was easy to miss though, so I'm glad I caught it in time.

Throat and mouth sounds ASMR with a little steel guitar

I have one and just love it!
@podgson Yeah, a volume pedal is going to be my next purchase. Thanks for the comment.

That's a neat instrument.Where can you get learning material for this-chord books, notation books or videos?I might see about one.
Just got mine today, $80. after their 20% off coupon I received via email from musicians friend. MF is awesome, no tax/free shipping. Anyway, this Rogue is what you described, pretty amazing value and quality beginner. Having trouble finding a decent tuning example here on the tube.
I have the same one in black! I like it!
I just bought one too, I've never played anything and am trying to get into it. I have a long way to go.
great review man. love that Packers sweatshirt too.
@claudiohuesca It's just the stock pickup. I'm not using any effects pedals or anything but I have the reverb on my amp up really high.

You’ll be able to hear it without an amp but it will be very quiet. You need an amp to hear it well or for anyone else to really hear it.
You bought it from MF? Did it come with the slide or did you have to buy that seperate?
It did not come with one. I ordered it separately.
Would like to see another video of you playing now that you've had 9 months worth of practice on it...???
hey man that is really good, to what tuning did you set it up?
I am also impressed with the Rogue lap steel guitar. A friend just bought one....
I play acoustic and electric guitar but never tried slide until now and I sounded just like you did after playing for an hour. So I sound like a cat in heat so far...LOL...

I'm sure they'd let you play the last song.

At that price it's probably worth getting one just to learn 'Breathe'
Foghat1961 absolutely
Along with "High Hopes" and "One of These Days"

If he was wearing a Steelers sweatshirt have some credibility.
Hello :: Encouragements I usse this lapsteel guitar "kelboson " on yutube .Robert
Jesus loves you!
Jesus, if he existed, has been dead for millennia, so that’s an odd thing to say.
why did you post this ? your nowhere near ready to be posting anything concerning steel guitars !!!
Feel free to post your own review of this if you feel I've done a poor job or have misrepresented this instrument.
the steel guitar is an instrument that takes years to even be considered "fair" playing it , this yokel hasn't even figured out how to take it out of the box yet ..therefore has no business even attempting to demonstrate anything
steelguitarplayer1 lame
steelguitarplayer1 you are not cool
Arrogant dick
